  1. I was in the Menil neighborhood today and the hotel is coming along nicely. I think the scale is perfect for the neighborhood.I love the aerial views but to get the real feel for the scale and feel of this project you need to walk down West Main from the Drawing Institute to Mandell. You really begin to understand why they didnt build a six or ten story edifice. It fits in with the houses across the street in a very natural way. This is going to become a very popular destination for out of town art lovers. Anything taller would have been inappropriate.
  2. Speaking of sculpture, Andrew Durham Gallery, where I am director, located at 1821 West Alabama, currently has a beautiful sculpture exhibition featuring work by six artist with ties to Texas. The exhibition will remain through December 2nd. Please Come by. Wed. - Sat. 11:00 - 6:00 You can get a preview on Glasstire's five minute video tours.
  3. In the past I have reported on the ongoing rehabilitation and remodel of the Riverside Terrace jewel, known as the Weingarten Mansion. This magnificent estate sits on a roughly 5 acre tract of land that fronts Bray's Bayou, just east of Scott street. Nearly 8 years ago the house was bought by the Schroeders with plans to renovate restore and bring the estate back better than it was. After many starts and stops it appears to have bogged down over the last five years and come to a complete halt. This, after the home received a new roof, new windows and doors, the brickwork was completed and it looked like they were going great guns. Then recently I noticed that the brickwork had been completely removed. I was told it was due to the fact that there was no water barrier between the brick and the studs. They have covered the house with Tyvek, and now appears they are adding some kind of decorative marble to the facade. I'm not sure where this is going, but I do hope they get they're act together and finish what looked originally like a wonderful rehabilitation of one of Riverside Terraces most beautiful structures. On another note the pair of American Bald Eagles have been spending a lot of time sitting in the top of a tall pine tree just to the west of the large white house on the corner of Rio Vista and South MacGregor. They spend quite a bit of time there, not far from their nest which is in the east end of Parkwood Park which is one of the most beautiful and hilliest parks in all of Houston. If you ride your bike along S. MacGregor keep a lookout for them. They are truly magnificent and a really special treat for visitors and citizens of Riverside Terrace. You don't often have an opportunity to see Bald Eagles in an urban setting.

  5. It looks like the MFAH, is preparing a site, in front of the Kinder Bldg., near the entrance to the sculpture garden on Bissonnet. I've heard it's a Simone Leigh sculpture. Her work was featured in the Venice Biennale. This will be an important acquisition for the museum and it will look nice there. I'd also like to see something sited along Main.
  6. Things could be worse. Look at China. They're imploding high-rises 15 at a time, and never been lived in.
  7. Buyucity seems a little bit of a debbie downer. Sure something needs to be done about the X situation. They must have known when they named it they wouldn't be finishing it. Why'd they call it X. And if you look at the last cycle of all of the good things that came about you'd be a fool not to be gushing over all of the improvements. 1. Memorial Park overhaul 2. MFAH adds the Kinder the new Glassell school and the Lake Flato conservation department. 3. The ICON 4. Levitt Green 5. The Brava 6. The Ari's 7. Texas Tower 8. The Brava 9. Rice additional buildings 20.Bike lanes Feel free to add to this incredible list of accomplishments
  8. Sure it sho The rendering does show a bridge which would cross OST which is a very busy street. It's in the bottom of the rendering. It would also tie the dental school, MD Anderson cancer treatment centers along with the UT Health Science center to the Helix. You can see the bridge in the bottom of the screen crossing OST.
  9. Montrose, Midtown and the Museum districts are all three seeing incredible rises in their density levels after this latest round of development.
  10. With all of the growth and density in the neighborhood, it makes sense to start adding more restaurants. The only problem I see with that site is egress. I pass by their twice a day and its always a pain with the rail and the cars trying to enter the valet drop off at the medical arts building. They often block Binz awaiting pick up. Hopefully this is on the Caroline side of the building and not on the Binz side.
  11. My guess would be that the boutique hotel will be sheathed in cheap stucco. It seems to be the material of choice for these franchise hotels and apartment buildings. My second guess is there will be a crew out on scaffolding in less than three years repairing said stucco.
  12. I believe the Live oak trees in Highrise Towers 3rd and 4th images are on OST, and they were planted several years ago. All the other trees have been brought in since construction commenced.
  13. Thats what the banners are for. I don't want to see murals painted on any of the fine arts buildings. Paint on the Mies building. No way. Or the Moneo no. There are plenty of sculptures around the campus . They are about to add an impressive work by last years Venice Bienalle U.S Representative Simon Leigh to the Kinder building near the entrance to the sculpture garden. That is going to be quite and accession, that will add to the already wonderful outdoor public sculpture garden which anyone can walk through for free. Lets save murals for ugly cinderblock walls and leave the world class architecture alone. I dont think Mies, Moneo or Holls would think very highly of someone slapping a bunch of paint on the sides of their buildings.
  14. I know this is off topic and not in the right thread but I cant find the thread for the 43 story Ziegler Cooper residential highrise for DeisoMoss to be built on Post Oak Blvd, anywhere. I haven't heard a thing about it in a year it seems. Has anyone heard anything about this project and can anyone tell me where it is listed. Thanks!
  15. This really grabs your attention on 288 heading north. Its going to really add to the density of the ever expanding museum district.
  16. I just read an inspirational article about a woman in Portland Oregon, who made a promise to do something about homelessness during a college spring break as a volunteer in a program for homeless families. Here is a link to the article. She kept her word and it's working. https://www.cnn.com/2023/06/09/us/oregon-homeless-families-shelter-housing-cnnheroes/index.html
  17. Perhaps public bathrooms and a bathing facility would be a humane and forward thinking solution. It wouldn't have to be on Main street but somewhere that was fairly accessible and patrolled.
  18. I wish our drone pilots would give us an overview of the progress of development along eastern Buffalo bayou. Starting at Allens Landing through downtown east to as far as construction along the bayou continues. It would be nice to see the area where the new northern canal is going to connect with White Oak and its cut across to the eventual reconnect with Buffalo bayou. It would also be nice to have overall images of the area from Lockwood to Jensen to get an overall idea of all that is going on. Only wishing. I do think it would be advantageous to have this over view.
  19. You better watch out _nevii, you might be outed by the SOS for bringing this up.
