I ate at several of the Hamburgers by Gourmet locations. Hillcroft, Montrose, back side of Foley's garage on Milam, and Kirby. Two re-launches were tried after the originals closed. One in a house on Park Place Blvd. east of Reveille and also on NASA Rd.1 in Clear Lake City. They were flame-broiled and my usual was the one with BBQ sauce.

My wife and I had an excellent meal at The Anchorage one night. She had their Fried Shrimp and I had Filets of Sole wrapped around Abalone in a Creamy Sauce. I've had Dover Sole in England and other Sole dishes, but nothing like the dish at The Anchorage.

The Hughes Club was on Sheldon Road and was bordered on the east side by the San Jacinto River. It had a nice pool. I learned to water ski on the river when I was 14. Had to confront large wakes from sand barge tows. We got there by driving north from I-10.

Mandola's Deli is still at the corner of Cullen and Leeland. Across the street is Rainbo Bread Bldg. Just east of the bakery is the former East End State Bank Building. Across Leeland is the original bank building. After being a bank it was the location of Ballatori's Italian Restaurant. It closed several years ago. Could the deli you mentioned could have been Samperi's? I don't know the history of Mandola's Deli location. I do know that they are related to the Mandola Restaurants Clan.

I'm thinking it might have been called the Cattle Yard. There was also one on I-45 just north of Greenspoint Mall. I believe it was a Franchise started in Dallas.

Regarding the old Humble Golf Club south of Pasadena. It was located at Redbluff Road and Genoa-Redbluff. It was later named Baywood. It is now closed.

We lived on Howard Drive in Meadowbrook from 1945 to 1962. Our home phone went from Olive to MIssion telephone exchanges. OL-3345 to MI-3344, AND later MI9-3344.

The steak at Herert's Ritz was called their Rib Steak. It was actually a Bone-in Ribeye. A late uncle of mine went there often. It was a neat old place.

Alanda, my family and I ate often at the Post Oak location. The steak dinners were to die for as was the French Onion Soup. Later I had some business lunches at the Richmond Ave. location. Do you have any of the Recipes? Didn't the steaks come with a little pouring cup of steak sauce? I remember the Post Oak location being a hangout for Houston Golf Pros. Thanks for bringing back dining memories. Back then I bet your Dad knew the family that owned The Las Vegas Inn, Sonny Look, Granny Harber, Charlie Lung, Bud Bigalow and Bill Bennett real well. Pls follow up with any more information. I love Nostalgia. Tks!

Jamail's was on Shepherd not Kirby and is now a Petco. There have been numerous dining places on the east side of Kirby just north of the Southwest Frwy.

Does anyone remember Susanne's or Suzanne's Cafeteria that was upstairs in the Alabama Center at Shepherd and West Alabama. It was operational from the 50's thru 60's, maybe even the 40's. It was in the same center as the Alabama Movie Theater.

I believe the Railcar themed place on South Main by OST was originally the Railcar Restaurant. When it closed it became Droubi Imports that had Antone's type Poboys. Wasn't the Salad/Soup Vegetarian place on Shepherd down from Jamail's Grocery the Hobbit Hole?

Nikos Nikos is the Greek family-owned restaurant on Montrose just north of Westheimer. Brenner's Steak House is now owned by Tilman Fertitta and has 2 locations: the original on Katy Frwy and the 2nd on Buffalo Bayou where the Rainbow Lodge was. The Rainbow Lodge is now on Ella Blvd.where the French Place was in the log cabin structure.

The Happy Budda was owned and operated by the late Beverly Wren. She had operated several other Houston restaurants before. She was married to a wealthy Oilman and had traveled the World. The Happy Budda was a Teppanyaki style Japanese restaurant similar to Benihana. In the 70's I took clients there when I worked in the Shipping Industry. My employer was the US Gulf Agent for NYK Line of Japan. The menu was similar to Benihana with better and cheaper prices. It later had a fire and did not reopen. The food, ambience, and service were great. Beverly Wren passed away several years ago.

It was Ballatori's in the original East End Bank Building on Leeland. Just down the street from Rainbow Bread at Cullen and Leeland. The owner's son is Luigi Ballatori who lives in The Woodlands. He is not a Restauranteur and works in the oil and gas Industry Industry. He is on Facebook and collects and drives Lamborghinis.

Does anyone remember "Hamburgers by Gourmet" that had several Southwest, Montrose, and Downtown locations. They were Flame Broiled and had several combinations. My favorite was with Barbeque Sauce. After they were gone, around 1997, a former employee opened one on Park Place Blvd. in an old house. It just didn't fit the now Latino neighborhood. Many years before, while growing up in the East End, there was a Hamburger place on South Richey in Pasadena just south of Southmore called Kibbey's or Kibby's. They too had Flame Broiled Burgers and also had one with almost the same Barbeque Taste. Nowadays the only thing close to that taste is Bellaire Broiler Burger(originally one of the Bellaire Broiler Burger locations).

You might try contacting members of the Sartwelle family. I'm sure someone with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo could provide you with contact information. I tried Google and Yahoo for restaurant information but had now luck. There probably was a café or restaurant there since most Stockyards and Livestock Auction facilities usually have one next door or nearby. Those cowboys got to have a decent place to eat a steak!

Bookstore on Post Oak Blvd. was Cobler's bookstore owned and operated by Rita Cobler. Her daughter was a local TV personality at the time.

Lofgren's Bookstore that used to be on Park Place Blvd. House of Books that was on Stella Link. Bookstore that was in same center on Post Oak Blvd. with Esther Wolf. Majors Books on Fannin. Book Departments of Foley's, Sakowitz, and Joske's. Cougar Bookstore.

Regarding Beignets in Houston. The Shipley's Donut location 12225 Westheimer between Dairy Ashford and Kirkwood serves them. Don't be in a hurry. They are cooked to order just like at Café du Monde and Morning Call in New Orleans. They are the same franchise location that makes the Hoffy Twist named for Ken Hoffman of the Chronicle. It is a Cinnamon Twist Donut dipped in Chocolate.

Re: Old Bayou Inn, it was operated by the Huber brothers who earlier had Huber's Seafood near Old Market Square that served great seafood and had live Dixieland Music played by very talented musicians such as the late Clayton Baird(of Mrs. Baird's fame). The Old Bayou Inn served great hamburgers and very tasty home-made thick potato chips.

For overall best, it has to be Star Pizza at either location. For the Spring-Klein area it is Pizza Zone on Kuykendahl near Cypresswood.

When the then "modern" Nabisco Bakery opened in the early 50's in Houston on Holcombe and Almeda, the Harrisburg Rotary Club was invited on a tour of the new facility. I remember that it was as hot inside by the huge ovens as my family's laundry and dry cleaning plant.

The ones that I remember were: on Broadway in Park Place, on OST near Calhoun, on 11th in the Heights, on Bissonnet near Chimney Rock in the Bellaire area, and on Willow Meadows near Post Oak Rd. Someone above said there were some others, too. Since they are no longer around, I found a close taste to the Chuck Wagon's Wheel Burger. Next time you go to Whataburger, get them to put Mustard on both bun halves and add extra Pickles. It will bring back memories.
