  1. From seeing the actual plans on the desk of the president of student government my final year of school, the UC is basically going to be completely gutted and reorganized with student activities moved from the basement addition at the back, to a more prominent position upstairs in the main building, while all the meeting rooms and the DOS offices will be moved to the basement. An expanded bookstore/theatre addition will be built next to the UC on the faculty visitor lots at a later date.

  2. I really do see the other UH campuses being able to fill the needs.

UT and A&M are close to capacity and fully funded with limited results on a national scale.

Not only do UH and Houston need to think big, but so do our small minded state legislators.

As far as the tuition hike, I think it comes to $245 at 15 hours. $245 is not going to keep anyone out of college unless they are looking for an excuse to drop out.

The kids complain and complain so much that the cost of tuition is so much higher than it was 4-5 years ago (It is.) But UH is still way behind UT and A&M in Cost of Education.

  3. The problem with Jones Hall is that it's good, but not great (both acoustically and architecturally). It's hard to justify tearing down something that's good, especially when there's no guarantee that what replaces it will be great and not just good (and maybe even bad). Could you imagine if we tore down the crisp modern form of Jones Hall only to get something like the Hobby?

But anyone who has been to symphony halls in other cities, especially other symphonies in the nation's top ten, would have to agree that the interior space leaves something to be desired. Consider our neighbor to the north:

I cant remember. Which building in Dallas did Frank Lloyd Wright design?

  4. Having lived on campus all three of four years of attending, i always thought UHPD kept the core of the campus relatively crime-free; except for the normal college antics. The only places I felt uncomfortable late was along Scott , in the parking lots by the intramural fields, or walking past the Sigma Nu house on a friday night.

  5. It's already set in stone that Cullen will close sometime in May or June. Leveling has begun on the foundation of the new Cemo Business Classroom Building and the old Y Building will be torn down over the summer to construct the new Engineering Building

However the buzz around campus is that enough funding is in place for construction to begin on the Endzone facility at Robertson. A timeline for construction is not surprisingly unknown but an announcement is expected to come around the bowl game. Also Dr. Khator is preparing to secure funding from the state to help build the new Wheeler St. dorms as well as major renovations to the Towers, which are LOOOONG overdue. Fundraising should begin soon after.

  6. I was driving down Holcombe today and noticed road construction on Cambridge next to the big condo tower. I also noticed the construction extended North towards the bayou. Directly across from the end of construction was the new drainage tunnel and the MacGregor/Braeswood intersection. I dont remember seeing a bridge planned anywhere in this vicinity or in the Major Thourghfare plan, so I dont know what to make of this. However a big traffic circle with a grand fountain in the middle of it would be a great entrance to the medical center and Hermann Park if a bridge was built.

  7. Actually, the Katy Prairie is a good example of the kind of behavior that I'm referencing. Do you think that the level of interest would be anywhere near what it is if the demographics were more similar to the greater Northshore area?

But you are correct that my statements were not sufficiently clear. Not all environmentalists are like this. Some really and truely are hardcore bird-lovers and such. But the ones that seem to generate political pressures often seem to have ulterior motives...and it is interesting that issues like the one I mentioned here get zero attention.

I dont think many yet know about the Crosby Freeway. Once more people take notice of the area, enviromentalists will start denouncing urban sprawl out U.S 90.

Also they've been trying to halt sections B and C of the Grand Parkway for years and those arent the most affulent areas.

  8. yeah, they are there already, skating through parks and garages downtown. maybe if we build a place designated and designed for skating, it would cut down on the illegal skating. though skating backwards away from fat parking garage rent-a-cops as they chase you is a lot of fun and may keep them coming to garages, not that i ever did that.

and when i used to skate downtown, i was with a bunch of normal, 20-something skaters who were just looking for a place to skate.

Hey I NEVER did that! Honest.

  9. I think another terminal is in the long range plans, but it probably won't be for many years yet. I believe the next major step is to renovate Terminal B.

IAH is a visual hodgepodge, but I have to admit I have grown to like it. The layout, built terminal by terminal with different designs over the years, is one of the most inconsistent of major US airports that I have been through. It's complicated enough that natives who are familiar with it can take a certain pride in knowing how to get around.

Well A and B were designed and built pre-747. Google maps show that todays 757's and 767's dwarf the two terminals round concourse ends.
