  1. I'm all for specialty foods and stuff, but I was hoping for something more "mainstream", I guess. I've never been to their store on Westheimer, so I don't know....can I go there for paper towels and Diet coke, 409 and toilet paper?? I love olive oil, capers and hummus, but they only go so far for my daily needs. I guess I'll just continue to shop at KillerKrogerOnKullen for my staples. But I know where to go if I need grape leaves and baklava!

  2. While it is true airline food must be prepared differently, it also has to be seasoned and cooked to satisfy the most people, thus not too spicy, not too much garlic, salt, etc. Also, not to split hairs, but microwave ovens are not used on CO aircraft. In fact the food is precooked, then heated in hot air convection ovens. Also, to many peoples surprise, aircraft are not equipped with refrigerators.

  3. This is a really good idea. And don't several of the Houston chains operate in the new terminal already?

I am sad to see them ditch their meal service. It was the one thing that made me fly them over other airlines (honest, I am not just saying that).

Anyhow, I also thought I heard somewhere that they are going to be charging extra for additional legroom. WTH?!?

Pappasitos, Pappadeauxs, and Pappas BBQ each have an outlet in Terminal E. All the other stuff, as I recall, is made up of national chains. Wendy's, Subway, Starbucks, etc.

As for the legroom deal, I'm not really clear on the policy. I guess if there is an open exit row seat, you can pay to sit there. Whooppee. What if you're the sucker that paid to sit there, then someone who did not pay sits in the other available exit row seat. Won't you feel like a sucker? You think the flight attendants are gonna kick them out? i doubt it.

  4. Another idea would be something similar to what United does, giving free meals to people buy full fare Y/B tickets.

I think they came to this conclusion by looking at what was thrown away (yes, they went through all of the trash) and polling customers. They've posted on their Twitter feed that food wasn't a differentiator for a majority of their customers.

It can't be much of a differentiator if the free food is crap. Most of what CO serves as free is of lower quality than one might find at an interstate truck stop. As a consumer, I'd be very willing to pay for something that is of higher quality. You get what you pay for, (YGWYPF?? pretty good, eh, kylejack?) and free food ain't good.

  5. This comes down to climate dictating design.

These things have to be COOL to operate properly during the summer. If you cover them up, you would then have to spend a certain amount of power to cool the things down.

Don't really know how other cities with our same climate handles it, but I'm sure they wouldn't want to take on the added expense to do so.

Any idea how they keep it COOL in the summer now?

  6. I don't hate it. At first, I hated it because of what it stood for, now I am growing to like it from a more artistic point of view. I don't see it as unproportionate, in fact I think it fits the building well. Also, the lighting, fluorescent or neon, reminds me of many works of the minimalist Dan Flavin, who of course has a permanent installation in Richmond Hall at the Menil Collection, but on a much larger scale.

  7. Ponzo's on Bagby is quite good. Dolce Vita is amazing, but pretty gourmet and authentic, kind of on a different level than most places, opposed to the traditional pepperoni and sausage most Americans expect. The Robiola pizza will make you slap your mama. I'm trying Pink's tonight. All this pizza talk...makin' me hungry.

  8. OH my DOG. I had dinner at Caliopes tonight and it was great. Pronunciation?? cal I O pees?? Or cal E O pees? cal E OPs doesn't sound right, but I'm not a cajun or familiar with the dialect. Same with Chartres. Is it CHAR ters, or CHART res? I say CHAR ters. In New Orleans they say bur GUN dee. I read it as BUR gun dee. Like the wine. There are many more examples in town of streets, and places with different pronunciations...San fe LEE pe or San FILL a pee?? I know what is correct but why is there a discrepancy? I blame Marvin Zindler, dog rest his soul.

  9. I don't think anyone mentioned Taquerias Arandas on 45. I know it's a chain but at least it's a local chain. (I think) I had lunch there yesterday and it was quite good. It beats the socks off Taco Cabana!! Can anyone tell me of a mom N pop place around there with equal quality and service to Arnadas? I really like to support the local places but haven't had great luck with finding good food. I tried Pollos Asados La Silla on Canal but the mole kinda made me wanna barf. I do like Brothers Tacos on Dowling. The frijoles a la charra are so freakin' good!

  10. I should have responded earlier, but I'm just now getting over the Green Beer Hangover.

Yes, I was defensive because around the same time I read lcc179s comment, two TV crews were down the corner covering this "story". I figured with what lcc179 said and what I'm sure the tv folks were gonna say, this was going to get blown out of proprtion and would negatively impact the neighborhood. I'm over it now. I personally have very little reason to be out at 2:30am (I'm boring) so I guess I cannot speak of what shenanigans may or may not be happening, but my experience here has been pretty much all good. Ma-ha-lo!

  11. Has anyone posted this yet?

Carl Landry of the Houston Rockets was shot last night on the 3100 block of Leeland. Here's the link:

Crazy! Luckily, it's a flesh wound and not too serious.

I was really close to buying a townhouse about 3 blocks from here (Delano City Views). .

This is a rare occurrence that just happened to happen to someone famous. Had it been anyone else, it wouldn't have made the paper. If this one instance is going to deter you from buying over here(this happened a block from me) then you made the right decision. You clearly don't have the intestinal fortitude to handle living in a transitional hood. Like I said, this type of thing is rare over here and this is the first time in 3 1/2 years I've heard of anything like this happening around here. Not saying it doesn't of course, but this could have happened anywhere in the city.

  12. Welcome!

Thanks, Subdude. I've been lurking so long, I already feel like I know many of you (but not in a creepy way). I think I have a feel for the dynamic of the board and have learned so much. A long overdue thank you to all of you for entertaining and educating me about Houston. I love it here.

As far as the lights, if it is for the American Heart Association, then it isn't lame. For Valentine's Day? Lame. How big do you think those light bulbs are? Like as big as your head? Bigger?
