    BCO Hiking in Houston - Hike Lake Houston Park! November 11, 2018 - Meet at 12:45 PM, start 1 PM to 3 PM Lake Houston Wilderness Park 25840 Farm to Market 1485, New Caney, TX 77357 Let's enjoy a fall week-end hike in the quiet and peaceful Lake Houston Wilderness Park. Lake Houston Wilderness Park encompasses 4,786.6 acres of wooded parkland, approximately 30 minutes north of downtown Houston off of Highway 59 near the town of New Caney. Surprisingly, this is actually a City of Houston Park, recently under development to provide more outdoor activities, including hiking, canoeing, biking, horse-back riding, and camping. It's a fun place to explore. To reach the park from Houston, take US Highway 59 north to the New Caney exit, FM 1485; travel east ~2.5 miles to new park entrance, located on the south side of the road. (Note, continue past Baptist Encampment Road with flashing yellow light.) When you reach the entrance gate after a short drive, turn right on the Loop Road, then right on Nature Center Road, until you come to a parking lot on the left in sight of the nature center. We'll meet at 12:45 PM for an 1 PM hike, and hike 4-6 miles (RT) on wooded trails and along pleasant creeks. Look for group (and the BCO sign) in Nature Center parking lot for Lake Houston Park at 12:45 PM. Bring your camera, a snack, water, and comfortable walking shoes. A $3 entry fee is required for all visitors ages 13 – 64. (Please, give yourself plenty of timet o find the start location, We will leave right at 1:00) Pets are not allowed in buildings in the park. All pets must be kept on a leash. And this is a long hike so please be sure your dog is up to it.     BCO Graffiti Art & Bike Ride November 10, 2018 – Meet 1:45 PM, ride from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm El Tiempo Navigation 2814 Navigation Blvd Houston, TX 77003 Have you checked out the outdoor artwork adorning the city these days? Graffiti has moved from outlaw to street art, and some of the top artists and newcomers are spraying it up, right here in Houston. We’ll be riding around H-town while checking out some of the more prominent and promising graphics to be seen. Most of the ride today is on the streets of Houston, so DON’T forget your helmet – if you do, we will have a few to lend. Want to preview some of the art we will be seeing? Check out http://www.gulfcoastgraffiti.com . Meet at 1:45 PM in the gravel parking lot of El Tiempo, and we will ride out from there. Grab lunch if you get there early, we will hang out after the ride and enjoy the libations and tasty Mexican food. From El Tiempo, we’re going to ride east and check out all the Harrisburg trails and on to Braes Bayou trails. We’ll wind our way back to Navigation around 5:00 to hang out and chat! No bike? Tennis shoes or hiking boots, both work equally well. The Terry Hershey trail is wooded, runs next to the Bayou and you’ll think you’re on the AT. Well, the Houston version of the AT! This is a great hike to stretch your legs and meet other people who enjoy getting outside. Meet at 9:00 AM we will head out about 9:30 AM. Pedal with us this Saturday for a fun weekend ride that will leave your taste buds and souls enriched and support our wonderful Houston Farmers Markets. Did you know many of our local restaurateurs’ shop at our Houston Farmers' Markets each week? There they find the best handcrafted cheeses, local produce, baked goods and locally sourced organic meats, and you can too! Our mission is to pedal fast enough to beat them before they take all the goods in the market, but slow enough to enjoy every revolution of the ride. We’re experts at finding the perfect balance! We’ll meander our way down side streets, trails and residential areas you never knew existed in the heart of Houston. First, we’ll wake ourselves up with the delicious aroma of a leisurely Onion Creek coffee. Bring your 4-leggers, grab the 2-leggers and definitely bring the cameras because you are going to want to capture this for posterity! Join Bayou City Outdoors, SNAP, PetTalk & Urban Tails for Picasso's by Paws, a fundraiser for Houston SNAP (Spay-Neuter Assistance Program). We'll be assisting the dogs in bringing out their inner Picasso with safe, water based paints and canvases. Every dog paints their own masterpiece and then for a small donation ($10 - $20 suggested donation) you take the masterpiece home. Put it up on the fridge or hang it in the living room, this is barking good art! After painting, there will be a rinse and wading pool station.     11th Annual BCO Haunted Hike October 31, 2018 - 6:45 PM - 8 PM Meet at Memorial Park near the rugby/soccer field parking lot N Picnic LN - South side of Memorial (map link at www.bayoucityoutdoors.com) Get your spooky on with BCO as we hike and slither our way through Memorial Park wooded trails and off the beaten path. What better to do on Halloween than to taunt the forest trolls? For those who make it out of the forest in one piece, we’ll fortify ourselves with pizza and beverages and toast those we left behind just kidding!! Tap into your inner wolf or go all vampy on us, or come as your witchy self. Leave the bars to the zombies and join us in the woods for some quality and creepy exercise and socializing at Memorial Park. We meet at 6:30 and depart at 6:45 PM sharp from somewhere around the the rugby/soccer field parking lot on the south side (check the map and then look for the BCO signs) there’s a lot of construction at the Park these days. For you chickens out there - just come to the after-party starting around 8 PM in the parking lot. Don’t get left in the dark and don’t forget to wear walking shoes (it is a hike no matter how dead you are), a flashlight, bug spray, and $5.00 for pizza. BOATS, Bats & Brew Grab your kayak or canoe and let's paddle up to the bats (but not too close :)) It will be a sunset paddle that will end in the dark, so please be prepared. Lights, water shoes, pfd - let's play! Meet at 6:30 PM in the parking behind the Fonde Center close to the bayou. (leaving at 7:00 PM) located at 110 Sabine St, Houston, TX 77007 - parking details below “The Waugh Bridge Bat Colony” consists of Mexican free-tailed bats that emerge nightly to stretch their wings & feed on area insects. BOATS Bring your own kayak or canoe. BCO has some loaner boats available; please contact the office if you need one (you do need to be a BCO Member to borrow a boat) Austin Canoe and Kayak does overnight rentals, call 713-660-7000 to get a boat. BATS The bats start leaving the bridge somewhere between 7:15 and 7:30. We will get on our boats this evening to enjoy and watch their amazing life on the water. BREWS And what about the brews...? Trails are a mix of hard packed dirt, sand, trees and tree roots. It is wooded and wild in the middle of the city! Join us for an hour and a half quick-paced hike through some of the lesser-known (and more adventuresome) trails our park has to offer. Wear tennis shoes or hiking boots, as it’s easy to bang a toe on a tree root. And, there’s some "elevation" in the park that you wouldn’t expect from just driving by.   21. BCO Bikes, Bats, Brews & BCycles- all on Buffalo Bayou! August 18, 2018 – meet time of 6:45 PM leave 7:15 to 10:30 PM Fonde Center Parking Lot (meet behind Sabine Lofts next to the bayou) 110 Sabine Street Houston, TX 77007 Join us for Bats, Bikes, BCycles & Brews on our beautiful Buffalo Bayou! Houston, where the bayou (not the river) runs through it! We’ve got a lot of B’s going on for this event, if only we had Brad Pitt, too. As you know by now, even if your new, Buffalo Bayou runs right down the middle of our city. What you may not know is that it’s is home to over a quarter of a million Mexican Free Tail Bats. Yes, Austin isn’t the only cool spot in Texas to get batty! Our bats live under Waugh Street bridge and come out at sunset to dine on our local mosquito population – Eat bats, eat! Thanks to wonderful volunteers and work crews, the paved biking paths on the Bayou have been fully restored, and are clear for us to ride the length of the Bayou from Shepherd Street bridge all the way to downtown and back. Join Bayou City Outdoors (BCO) as we lead the group for an easy 6 – 8-mile ride stopping for about 30 minutes to watch the bats pour out and then continue downtown for the young at heart! Downtown we’ll park our bikes at a local watering hole and be back to Fonde by 10:30. If 10:30 is past your bedtime, don’t fret, we’ll ride by our parking lot on the way downtown to drop off all you, larks. No, we’re not calling you a bad word. Apparently, that’s what you call the opposite of a night owl. Meet at 6:45 PM in the back of the Fonde Community Center’s Parking Lot behind Sabine Lofts along the bayou located at 110 Sabine St, Houston, TX 77007. We will roll out at 7:15pm, so don’t get left behind! No bike, no problem. Choose a red bike from the BCycles station!
