  1. BCO & HTXO present A Walk in the Woods aka Hiking Houston May 18, 2019 Meet at 9:30 AM, start 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM Meet at Memorial Park Rugby Field Parking Lot N Picnic Lane Houston, TX 77007 Memorial Park, known as the Central Park of H-town, is an amazing 1,466-acre park (one of the largest in the county) right inside the loop! Trails are a mix of hard packed dirt, sand, trees and tree roots. It is wooded and wild in the middle of the city! Join us for an hour and a half, quick-paced hike through some of the lesser-known (and more adventuresome) trails our park has to offer. Wear tennis shoes or hiking boots, as it’s easy to bang a toe on a tree root. You’ll be shocked at some of the "elevation" in the park that you wouldn’t expect from just driving by. Remember to bring water as there are no water fountains along the trails. Please, check the meeting location map on the Bayou City Outdoors site calendar before you head over to the park. It’s a big park, and we try and leave on time! 3. BCO & HTXO Farmer’s Market Bike Ride May 11, 2019 - meet at 8:00 am, from 8:30 to noon Onion Creek 3106 White Oak Dr. Houston, TX 77007 Grocery stores are so overrated! You drive to them, carrying your little bags in and pushing around a cart and wheels don’t even function properly half of the time. Maybe it's your lucky day and there are even some cookie samples left over in the bin…BORING! Instead of your typical shopping routine, why don't you pedal with us on a Saturday morning for a fun weekend ride that will leave your taste buds and souls enriched and support our wonderful Houston Farmers Markets. Who knows what new food or drink you may discover! Did you know many of our local restaurateurs' shop at our Houston Farmers Markets each week? There they find the best handcrafted cheeses, local produce, baked goods, and locally sourced organic meats, and you can too! Our mission is to pedal fast enough to beat them before they take all the goods, but slow enough to enjoy every revolution of the ride. We're experts at finding the perfect balance! We'll meander our way down side streets, trails and residential areas you never knew existed in the heart of Houston. First, we'll wake ourselves up with the delicious aroma of a leisurely Onion Creek coffee. After our caffeine kicks in, we'll cruise off to the markets to shop for fresh produce, sauces, jams, and delicious baked bread. This 12-15 mile ride lasts about three hours, so bring plenty of water and a backpack to carry all your goodies home! Plan on sticking around after the ride to enjoy lunch at Onion Creek Cafe. They are a locally owned eatery with great food, atmosphere and brews! No bike? No worries! Houston has great rental options. Choose from: · B-Cycle Kiosk: Looking for the quickest rental option? B-Cycle allows you to rent via mobile app. There are many stations around town to pick up and drop off your rental. Backpacking is camping to the extreme. It enables you to take the path less traveled and find those once in a lifetime, National Geographic worthy vistas! It’s about finding your inner John Muir and taking only what you need. Backpacking is truly the ultimate adventure. However, it’s an adventure where preparation could make or break your trip and your back. One of the biggest mistakes rookies make is over packing. Normally, we take pride in fitting an outstanding amount of objects into our bags, but for backpacking you have to find a balance. As backpacking veterans, we’ve learned through experience how to do just that. Join us in person for Houston Outdoor LIVE at Whole Earth Provision Co. for a packing demo and weigh-in session to demonstrate live the value of choosing your gear carefully. Can’t make it in person, check us out via Facebook Live (https://www.facebook.com/BayouCityOutdoors ). Both events run simultaneously and you can join the Q&A online or in person. We are shaking it up a bit this year and holding our Travel Planning Party before we actually unveil our final selected 2019 Trips! Crazy, we know, but there is a method to our madness…sometimes! Over this last year, we have had so many members say they would like to lead a trip, but then ask, "Do you think anyone will want to go"? We think the best way to find out is to ask! There are about 30+ trips that have been suggested for 2019, and even into 2020. We're going to showcase all the trips and let you pick. Plan on worldwide adventures and quite a few stateside and even Texas wide. We've heard it all and love what we're hearing. Come out, find out, vote and then... Pack your bags, find your passport, and if you don't have a travel companion – don't worry – we've got you covered! There is always plenty of fun, BCO adventurers up for a jaunt! In 2018, we went to Costa Rica, New Zealand and Greece. We sucked blood... well... wine, at Dracula's Castle in Transylvania, Romania at Halloween. We biked Holland, South Africa and Cuba. We hiked in Ireland, backpacked Big Bend in Utah. Plus, we somehow managed to fit in Yellowstone, Napa, Santa Fe, Palo Duro Canyon and the Grand Canyon, to name just a few! You would think it would be impossible for us to top the above trips in 2019, but we are going for it. At the event, we’ll be showcasing some of our newest trips. Here’s a quick sneak peek: skiing (cross country and downhill), Costa Rica, hiking and touring all over the world, biking in Croatia, hiking Machu Picchu, backpacking in Grand Canyon, wine tasting in Oregon, hanging out in the Hill Country at our Rock Out Weekend, and exploring Texas with our new weekend series! (These are only the trips we’re leaking to press right now- but take our word for it, there’s more to come!) Join us this evening to learn about all the travel adventures 2019 has to offer. You will get all the details on almost all the 2019 trips planned. You’ll meet the trip leaders, connect with travel companions, and make some awesome new friends. All you have to do is sign up for the trips you want, grab your passport, pack your camera, and plan on adventuring with BCO! BCO & HTXO New Years Day Hike January 1, 2019 - Meet at 6:15 PM, start 6:30 PM to 8 PM Meet at Memorial Park Rugby Field Parking Lot N Picnic Lane , Houston , TX 77007 “For last year's words belong to last year's language and next year's words await another voice.” T.S. Eliot You’ve made resolutions in the past to be healthier and more adventurous, but this year is your year to actually make it happen, and good news, we’re here to help. Who do you want to be in 2019? What do you want to accomplish? Put your best foot forward on January 1st and hike in the New Year with BCO and HTXOutdoors’ New Year’s Day Hike! Even if you’re not the resolution type, we can’t think of a better way to kick off the New Year than exploring the back trails of Houstonians’ favorite, Memorial Park. As the Chinese Proverb goes, “A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.” Call me an optimist, but I love New Year’s Day. For me, it’s like I get the chance to hit life’s big reset button. Midnight hits, the ball drops, and I’m all of the sudden, miraculously refocused and determined to check-off everything on my resolution bucket list. One of those things on my list this year, along with so many of our other members, is to hike the Incan Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru. To make it to this UNESCO World Heritage Site, I’m going to have to walk 8-12 miles a day. It goes without saying that I’ll be starting my training January 1st with our New Year’s Day Hike. I’ll leave you with another corny quote by C.S. Lewis to hopefully inspire you to join us on January 1st and/or any day after, “There are far better things ahead than any we leave behind.” We’ve got bigger and better adventures planned ahead for 2019, whether you want to stick around in Houston or travel the globe, visit our websites to find out more! HIKE EVENT DETAILS We’ll be meeting at the Rugby Field Parking Lot in Memorial Park, and heading out at 6:30 pm promptly, to hike some of Houston’s best inner city outdoor trails. The hike will most likely last until 8 pm. Please leave your human kids at home, but feel free to bring your other furry ones. We find our four-legged friends can keep up on hikes and are less impacted by our undistinguished adult behavior. RSVP at https://bit.ly/2AU6ri0 For additional info, please call 713-524-3567 or e-mail to info@bayoucityoutdoors.com . *** Get your copy of Houston A to Z while it lasts. BCO - A Walk in the Woods Aka Hiking Houston December 1, 2018 Meet at 12:20 PM, start 12:30 AM to 2 PM Meet at Memorial Park Tennis Center 1500 E Memorial Loop Dr, Houston, TX 77007 After the Memorial Park Fitness Fair (https://www.facebook.com/events/898520373674649/), let's get in some fitness! Memorial Park, known as the Central Park of H-town, is an amazing 1466-acre park (one of the largest in the county) right inside the loop! Trails are a mix of hard packed dirt, sand, trees and tree roots. It is wooded and wild in the middle of the city! Join us for an hour and a half quick-paced hike through some of the lesser-known (and more adventuresome) trails our park has to offer. Wear tennis shoes or hiking boots, as it’s easy to bang a toe on a tree root. And, there’s some "elevation" in the park that you wouldn’t expect from just driving by. Remember to bring water; there are no water fountains along the trails. We will meet at Memorial Park Tennis Center (at BCO & HTXO Booth) - 1500 E Memorial Loop Dr, Houston, TX 77007. Just look for the BCO & HTXO Booth by the Tennis Center - we'll head out from there!
