  2. Early Morning Wildlife Hike June 25, 2022 - 7:30 am – 10 am Stephen F. Austin State Park Park Road 38 San Felipe, TX 77473 Since this park is an easy drive from Houston (especially for the west side), let’s do an early morning hike before it heats up! I’ll put together a check list of items to find while we’re hiking. In the early morning, we should see a good amount of wildlife. Deer, rabbits, woodpeckers, many kinds of birds, etc. Depending on how much we stop to view wildlife, we’ll hike anywhere between 3-5 miles. It will be a casual hike but you should be able to walk 30 min miles (2 miles per hour). What to bring: - Water - Sun protection - Bug protection - Study shoes (we’re on real trails) - Snack No Dogs or Kids Please. For our best chances to see wildlife, please leave your dogs home for this hike. Getting There: There is a lot of construction on I10 near the exit. Please look up directions before you go instead of following GPS blindly. You should get off right after crossing the river and drive through residential fields. It’s a really pretty drive. Parking: Park in the lot at the Nature Center. Fees: Event is free, entrance fee is $5 per person unless you have a State Park Pass. State Park Pass gets the entire car in for free. Reserve your park pass online here. (https://texasstateparks.reserveamerica.com/ ) NOTE: We are meeting before the park HQ opens. Please reserve your day pass online, print it and put it in your windshield. The park rangers will look for your parking pass. BCO & HTXO present: Backpacking 101 (live) March 18, 2019 - 6:45 PM – 8:00 PM Whole Earth Provision Co., 2501 Post Oak Blvd, Houston, TX 77056 OR online at www.facebook.com/BayouCityOutdoors/ Don’t let inexperience stop you from taking the trail of a lifetime! Backpacking is camping to the extreme. It enables you to take the path less traveled and find those once in a lifetime, National Geographic worthy vistas! It’s about finding your inner John Muir and taking only what you need. Backpacking is truly the ultimate adventure. However, it’s an adventure where preparation could make or break your trip and your back. One of the biggest mistakes rookies make is overpacking. Normally, we take pride in fitting an outstanding amount of objects into our bags, but for backpacking, you have to find a balance. The longer your going to carry your pack, the more important this is. Your pack needs to be light enough to lug for miles and miles, while still having everything you need. As backpacking veterans, we’ve learned through experience how to do just that. How to find the group: Join us in person, or check us out online via our Facebook LIVE event on the BCO Facebook page (www.facebook.com/BayouCityOutdoors/). Both events run simultaneously, and you can join the Q&A online or in person. We’re in the back of the store near the shoe section. If you do happen to drop in, you have the chance to win some very cool giveaways compliments of Whole Earth Provision. The giveaway will be held at the end of the presentation. Plus Karbach providing cold beverages while supplies last. Parking: Large parking lot, not a problem! Each month we take a topic, drill down as quick & deep as we can, to get you up to speed and out playing. We’ll take Q&A after the presentation to help guide everyone into outdoor summer fun mastery. What will we talk about? We’re going to get through as many of these essentials as we can plus a Q&A at the end: - Food and water needs and options - Backcountry toilets and beyond - Building up to carrying your pack - How to pack your pack – lighter is better - What you need in your first aid kit - Filtering water with several different types of filters - Staying safe around potential predators - How, where and why to hang your personal effects and food Bonus! Join us and you'll also be able to download the free “#10Essentials for Backpacking” that evening - we promise to get you backpacking like the best! Everything you need to know, buy, skip, learn and carry in a single, awesome tip sheet. Before you head out on the trail, join us for the evening chat. This event is designed specifically for YOU! Whatever your questions and reasons for attending, DO IT! You'll meet folks in the same exact boat as you, and you'll learn a whole lot about the upcoming fun Bayou City Outdoors has coming your way. Some of our Event Leaders will also be on hand to talk about their upcoming events! Make new friends and learn about all the fun you're about to have in Houston and worldwide! 19. New Year’s Night Hike January 1, 2020 - Meet at 6:15 PM, start 6:30 PM to 8 PM Meet at Memorial Park Rugby Field Parking Lot N Picnic Lane, Houston, TX 77007 “For last year's words belong to last year's language and next year's words await another voice.” T.S. Eliot WELCOME TO 2020!! wait... where are the flying cars??? While it might not look like what we thought based on the Jetsons, I’m super excited for a fresh start in 2020! You’ve made resolutions in the past to be healthier and more adventurous, but this year is your year to actually make it happen, and good news, we’re here to help. Who do you want to be in 2020? What do you want to accomplish? Put your best foot forward on January 1st and hike in the New Year with Bayou City Outdoors and HTXoutdoors’ New Year’s Night Hike! Even if you’re not the resolution type, we can’t think of a better way to kick off the New Year than exploring the back trails of Houstonians’ favorite, Memorial Park. As the Chinese Proverb goes, “A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.” Call me an optimist, but I love New Year’s Day. For me, it’s like I get the chance to hit life’s big reset button. Midnight hits, the ball drops, and I’m all of a sudden, miraculously refocused and determined to check-off everything on my resolution bucket list. One of those things on my list this year, along with so many of our other members, is to hike the Incan Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru. To make it to this UNESCO World Heritage Site, I’m going to have to walk 8-12 miles a day. It goes without saying that I’ll be starting my training January 1st with our New Year’s Night Hike. I’ll leave you with another corny quote by C.S. Lewis to hopefully inspire you to join us on January 1st and/or any day after, “There are far better things ahead than any we leave behind.” We’ve got bigger and better adventures planned ahead for 2020, whether you want to stick around in Houston or travel the globe, visit our websites to find out more! HIKE EVENT DETAILS We’ll be meeting at the Rugby Field Parking Lot in Memorial Park, and heading out at 6:30 pm promptly, to hike some of Houston’s best inner city outdoor trails. The hike will most likely last until 8 pm. Fees: This Event is free for BCO & HTXO members and $5 for Non-members. Please leave your human kids at home, but feel free to bring your other furry ones. We find our four-legged friends can keep up on hikes and are less impacted by our undistinguished adult behavior. But please bring poop bags and water! One of the biggest mistakes rookies make is over packing. The longer your going to carry your pack, the more important this is. Your pack needs to be light enough to lug for miles and miles, while still having everything you need. As backpacking veterans, we’ve learned through experience how to do just that. Join us in person for Houston Outdoor LIVE at Whole Earth Provision Co. for a packing demo and weigh-in session to demonstrate live the value of choosing your gear carefully. Can’t make it in person, check us out via Facebook Live (https://www.facebook.com/BayouCityOutdoors ). Both events run simultaneously and you can join the Q&A online or in person.
