  3. BCO presents A Walk in the Woods Aka Hiking in Houston January 18, 2020 – meet at 9:30 AM, start at 10 AM to 11:30 AM Meet at Memorial Park by the rugby/soccer field parking lot N Picnic Lane Houston, TX 77007 Join us for an hour and a half, quick-paced hike through some of the lesser-known (and more adventuresome) trails our park has to offer. About this Event Hiking in Houston does exist! And we’re going to show you by taking you on some ‘hidden’ trails that even some native Houstonians don’t know about! And, it’s right here, inside the loop! What to Wear: These are actual trails!! Wear tennis shoes or hiking boots, as it’s easy to bang a toe on a tree root. You’ll be shocked at some of the "elevation" in the park that you wouldn’t expect from just driving by. Wear long pants, yes, even in the summer. It helps to protect your legs from bugs, critters and branches that might jump out and bite you! What else to bring: - Water! Water is required. - Bug Spray - Sun Protection - hat, sunglasses, long sleeves, sunscreen - Long pants and sturdy shoes Where to Park: Please, check the meeting location map (https://bit.ly/2M6GKST ) on the calendar before you head over to the park.  It’s a big park, and we try and leave on time! If the lot is full, there is plenty of street parking. How to find the group: Look for the BCO sign for where the parking lot is. We’ll be on the grass at the back of that parking lot. (not standing in the parking lot.) Fees: This Event is free for BCO & HTXO members and member guests and $5 for Non-members Never been before?? No worries! More than half of the people going have never been before and many people show up by themselves. So when you show up, if everyone looks like they have known each other for years.... Don’t worry. They likely just met. Look for the event leader and then they know it’s your first time and we’ll make sure to take care of you! 9. New Year’s Night Hike January 1, 2020 - Meet at 6:15 PM, start 6:30 PM to 8 PM Meet at Memorial Park Rugby Field Parking Lot N Picnic Lane, Houston, TX 77007 “For last year's words belong to last year's language and next year's words await another voice.” T.S. Eliot WELCOME TO 2020!! wait... where are the flying cars??? While it might not look like what we thought based on the Jetsons, I’m super excited for a fresh start in 2020! You’ve made resolutions in the past to be healthier and more adventurous, but this year is your year to actually make it happen, and good news, we’re here to help. Who do you want to be in 2020? What do you want to accomplish? Put your best foot forward on January 1st and hike in the New Year with Bayou City Outdoors and HTXoutdoors’ New Year’s Night Hike! Even if you’re not the resolution type, we can’t think of a better way to kick off the New Year than exploring the back trails of Houstonians’ favorite, Memorial Park. As the Chinese Proverb goes, “A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.” Call me an optimist, but I love New Year’s Day. For me, it’s like I get the chance to hit life’s big reset button. Midnight hits, the ball drops, and I’m all of a sudden, miraculously refocused and determined to check-off everything on my resolution bucket list. One of those things on my list this year, along with so many of our other members, is to hike the Incan Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru. To make it to this UNESCO World Heritage Site, I’m going to have to walk 8-12 miles a day. It goes without saying that I’ll be starting my training January 1st with our New Year’s Night Hike. I’ll leave you with another corny quote by C.S. Lewis to hopefully inspire you to join us on January 1st and/or any day after, “There are far better things ahead than any we leave behind.” We’ve got bigger and better adventures planned ahead for 2020, whether you want to stick around in Houston or travel the globe, visit our websites to find out more! HIKE EVENT DETAILS We’ll be meeting at the Rugby Field Parking Lot in Memorial Park, and heading out at 6:30 pm promptly, to hike some of Houston’s best inner city outdoor trails. The hike will most likely last until 8 pm. Fees: This Event is free for BCO & HTXO members and $5 for Non-members. Please leave your human kids at home, but feel free to bring your other furry ones. We find our four-legged friends can keep up on hikes and are less impacted by our undistinguished adult behavior. But please bring poop bags and water! 12. BCO & HTXO Farmer’s Market Bike Ride November 16, 2019 – 8:30 am to Noon Meet at Onion Creek Coffee 3106 White Oak Dr. Houston, TX 77007 Grocery stores are so overrated! You drive to them, carrying your little bags in and pushing around a cart and wheels don’t even function properly half of the time. Maybe it's your lucky day and there are even some cookie samples leftover in the bin…BORING! Instead of your typical shopping routine, why don't you pedal with us on a Saturday morning for a fun weekend ride that will leave your taste buds and souls enriched and support our wonderful Houston Farmers Markets. There they find the best handcrafted cheeses, local produce, baked goods, and locally sourced organic meats, and you can too! Our mission is to pedal fast enough to beat them before they take all the goods, but slow enough to enjoy every revolution of the ride. We're experts at finding the perfect balance! We'll meander our way down side streets, trails and residential areas you never knew existed in the heart of Houston. First, we'll wake ourselves up with the delicious aroma of a leisurely Onion Creek coffee. After our caffeine kicks in, we'll cruise off to the markets to shop for fresh produce, sauces, jams, and delicious baked bread. This 12-15 mile ride lasts about three hours, so bring plenty of water and a backpack to carry all your goodies home! Plan on sticking around after the ride to enjoy lunch at Onion Creek Cafe. They are a locally owned eatery with great food, atmosphere, and brews! No bike? No worries! Houston has great rental options. Choose from: B-Cycle Kiosk: Looking for the quickest rental option? B-Cycle allows you to rent via mobile app. There are many stations around town to pick up and drop off your rental. Check their map and pricing options information here: http://houston.bcycle.com. 14. BCO & HTXO Present: Backpacking 101 sponsored by Osprey Wed, October 16, 2019 - 6:45 PM – 8:00 PM Location: Whole Earth Provision Co. , 2501 Post Oak Blvd, Houston, TX 77056 OR online at http://www.facebook.com/BayouCityOutdoors/ Don’t let inexperience stop you from taking the trail of a lifetime! Backpacking is camping to the extreme. It enables you to take the path less traveled and find those once in a lifetime, National Geographic worthy vistas! It’s about finding your inner John Muir and taking only what you need. Backpacking is truly the ultimate adventure. However, it’s an adventure where preparation could make or break your trip and your back. One of the biggest mistakes rookies make is over packing. Normally, we take pride in fitting an outstanding amount of objects into our bags, but for backpacking you have to find a balance. The longer your going to carry your pack, the more important this is. Your pack needs to be light enough to lug for miles and miles, while still having everything you need. As backpacking veterans, we’ve learned through experience how to do just that. Join us in person for Houston Outdoor LIVE at Whole Earth Provision Co. for a packing demo and weigh-in session to demonstrate live the value of choosing your gear carefully. Can’t make it in person, check us out via Facebook Live (https://www.facebook.com/BayouCityOutdoors ). Both events run simultaneously and you can join the Q&A online or in person. However, you’ll want to join us in person if at all possible! Amazing Door Prizes & Raffle! Osprey is giving away Silicone Pint Glasses and Stuff Sacks to the first people who check-in at the event! (while supplies last!) PLUS!!! We’re raffling off an Osprey backpack to everyone who RSVPs. (Must be present in person to win.) What will we talk about? We’re going to get through as many of these essentials as we can plus a Q&A at the end: - Food and water needs and options - Backcountry toilets and beyond - Building up to carrying your pack - How to pack your pack – lighter is better - What you need in your first aid kit - Filtering water with several different types of filters - Staying safe around potential predators - How, where and why to hang your personal effects and food We’ll take Q&A after the presentation to help guide everyone into outdoor fun mastery. BCO Before you head out on the trail, join us for the evening chat. RSVP at https://bit.ly/2lxTAg9. For additional information, e-mail to info@bayoucityoutdoors.com Never been before?? No worries! More than half of the people going have never been before and many people show up by themselves. So when you show up, if everyone looks like they have known each other for years.... Don’t worry. They likely just met. Look for the event leader and then them know it’s your first time and we’ll make sure to take care of you! ……. Get your copy of Houston A to Z while it lasts.
