  1. I am of course perpetuating the problem, but I do agree on the topic thing. Not to call anyone out, but it is annoying when you see this specific topic pop up again on the most recently discussed, only to see things that have nothing at all to do with updates. Things such as "hey new page" or "what we need in downtown is a new rail system" have very little relevance to this. Just one man's opinion, that will in turn be sure to receive responses and keep the vicious cycle going.
  2. I agree, randalls just sucks now. The only thing I really like from there are their french baguettes. They scrapped Boar's head meats for their own safeway line and that was basically what did it for me not really buying anything there. Their prices always sucked, the refused to modernize, no lines were open during rush times (which led to the lack of rush times as well). I know people are split on whether or not the self checkout is worth using, but if I need just one thing, usually its faster to go through there than wait on some 16 year old in training. I agree HEB is my favorite, but I don't mind a signature kroger, and then also Central Market for the specialty things, which is of course owned by HEB. Not sure how that new Super Target will be near the Heights.
  3. Three Allen Center: Office Tower At 333 Clay St.
  4. My predictions - 1) Texans end up with the number 1 draft pick next year - See ya Carr, time for the Matt Leinart Show. 2) Casserly is fired - GM has built this team from scratch, still has about 0 talent, no bigger playmakers than when they started except Andre Johnson and maybe Dunta Robinson 3) Capers is 50/50 shot of staying, if Casserly gets a repreive, than Capers is gone I would get rid of both of Casserly and Capers, but don't think McNair is that aggressive. Titans have more talent than the Texans and all their player are pretty much in their 1st-3rd seasons. They pretty much already rebuilt in two seasons time after going through salary cap hell.
  5. The Texans are a joke. I'm glad to see that yesterday was a moral victory in that they "looked better" and were "competitive" uh, its season number 4, those moral victories were fine in season 1 but not now. This give them time adage is not really valid at this point, especially since despite high draft picks for all their drafts, there is still a lack of talent on the team. Even firing Capers doesn't do much, because the team is still the same. The OL is still the same bad one it was yesterday. The mess isn't going to get any better "with time." It'll take some excellent drafting and free agent pick ups over the next two seasons to really have a deep and strong team.
  6. I tried it a little over a week ago. Wasn't too terribly impressed, I like some other places around downtown better for burgers. it wasn't bad, but to be honest, eating a burger to be healthy isn't my thing. The people were nice there though and I did like the fact they had a syrup machine to add to flavor to sodas. for example, I was able to turn my normal Dr Pepper into a cherry Dr. pepper. Price was slightly less than Beck's.
  7. That's pretty awesome, I know people had been rumoring this for a while. Co-Op is pretty cool too. Definitely not a huge deal, but just cool to see. Hopefully it will last unlike the last time they were in the Galleria.
  8. That's my sentiment as well. not that I wouldn't like a theatre down there that I guess is more mainstream, but its not like the city has a serious lack of theatres either. I guess inner loop there aren't a whole lot of options, but you won't have people driving in from the suburbs just to see a movie. So I agree, its not just common sense. Also, I don't remember the plans saying explicitly "if its in Denver, it will be here" Seems like they will do a lot of demographic and economic research before just commiting to a complete replica.
  9. Why would we need a second movie theatre when the Angelika is already down there? Angelika is a nice place to go and its not that far from everything else either.
  10. One ironic thing about the Texans. From day one they talked about a blueprint to essentially avoid having a situation like the Browns, who ended up firing their head coach and got rid of most of their first round picks after a few years, and were still nowhere near competitive. Well, looks about the same here. Is David Carr any better than Tim Couch at this point? Chris Palmer, fired from the Browns, will probably be fired here. Team is nowhere near competitive, personnel problems are all over the field, and not one piece of the team stands out as being where it needs to be. So much for that blueprint.
  11. I agree this is great news. The best piece of news will be the day of groundbreaking.
  12. I think the Richmond strip is done. You have a few remaining places out there, but I would bet that in 5 years, a lot of the existing lots are converted to residential or something else. I agree that either downtown or midtown make much more sense now.
  13. I don't think Astroworld closing is the sign people don't want to visit Houston. You said it yourself, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, and Oklahoma City still have them. Do you hear people running down the streets saying they can't wait to visit those cities because of their theme park? I didn't even know they had one. I agree Houston needs one, and hopefully a new one will be built eventually. But if you look at what is needed to have a great park, the current site was just not going to get it done. Too small, bad parking, no attention paid to the park. Look at Cedar Point and Great Adventure New Jersey. Neither is in the middle of the city and both are considered among the best in the country. They have more land and more space. And those parks do attract attention nationally because they are great parks. But you can't expect a sub par park to compete and Astroworld is just not set up for greatness.
  14. I think it actually does a few things. One, everyone agrees the land where it currently is, is just not enough to have a first rate park. It probably is for the best long term that it get torn down and I know the residential areas are actually growing in really close to Astroworld. Astroworld is somewhat of an eyesore off of 610. Hopefully, someone will be able to put in a new first rate park in an area where there is sufficient land to grow and expand. I don't know if it was that all the rides were terrible, just not well maintained, marketed, etc. Also, I think this might strengthen the Astrodome convention idea. If you have an indoor attraction there, now it is the only attraction there, nothing else to compete against. As for a new park, you know the Tilman's of the world are probably excited. They know they have the chance to be the only player in town. Tilman is probably bidding on the land for where Nasa is as we speak to make Kemah north (just kidding).
  15. Wow that was a suck fest yesterday. I know, just one game. But there was not one part of the game that went well for the Texans. About the only thing to say at all positive was keeping Buffalo out of the end zone early in the game. I'm still at a loss as to how Chris Palmer has a job. Run out of Cleveland for sucking as a head coach, hired here as an offensive coordinator. Now has a 4th year offense going backward in terms of progress. new season, same problem, no protection for Carr, no receivers besides Andre Johnson. Don't understand why they think things will just get better without making personnel changes on the offensive line.
  16. I also tend to agree that preseason is not the best indicator, but they did look awful tonight. Offensive starters were still in late in the second quarter with a grand total of 4 passing yards. Defense looked apathetic. I know its not a real game, but some things are an indicator of the real thing, and not being able to stop Chris Simms is not the best sign of things to come. No pass rush at all. I can understand losing preseason games because you are trying new things and I can understand playing the bench, but this late in preseason you shouldn't look this bad. Not to mention even if it is the bench, some of these guys are playing for their jobs, so it gives you an idea as to how the depth is. My prediction is the Texans finishing third in the division behind Indy and Jacksonville. Preseason predictions are usually worth about a nickel at the end of the season.
  17. I saw the list and in general was pleased with the ideas. I agree the restaurants were a little much, but I would imagine that gets pared down to one or town by the time all is said or done. I like the idea of a little cafe/ restaurant on it, I know some people will say its a rip off of Tavern on the Green or something, but I think it would be nice. I meant to link to the article yesterday but forgot. I think it had something like a pond/stream, a kids area, a cafe, restaurants, some kind of playing field I think, and a dog run. Good for a start in my opinion.
  18. Yeah I guess I got my answer on whether or not there was anyone out there that would oppose the city working with the Pavilions to get them done. As someone else said, there is always someone out there that will oppose things, which is their fair right to do. I also don't completely understand TIRZ's but doesn't uptown also have TIRZ's?
  19. Just thinking about public pressure, could anyone imagine what could cause the city to say no? I know that the developers are asking for help from the city, but I have a hard time believing there would be oppposition from many people. I think some projects are always debatable (the stadiums, light rail, the new astrodome project), but I just think this could be as slam dunk as it comes. I would think the return the city would see from an investment and redevelopment standpoint is just too large, not to mention the public image benefits.
  20. I originally thought that was going to be where Wulfe was going to develop a grocery store center. However, if you look on their site, there is nothing listed there anymore. When you say gone, do you mean demolished or just abondoned? Don't know if maybe somebody else is developing something there.
  21. Red Scare, you realize we are all being sarcastic about no other major city having homeless or rats right? I was merely responding to semipro saying the homeless and rats were the main reason he doesn't go downtown. If that were the case, it would pretty much mean avoiding most major cities in the US. The point is that its unreasonable to ever expect a major downtown area to be spotless. Just look at the New York subways. I remember reading a book about fun different things to do in new york. It said one of the thing was to go all the way to the back of the trains and watch the tracks as the rats scurried after the trains went by. That wasn't my idea of fun, but you get the point...
  22. Checkers was definitely down in League City years ago. I think its a car dealership now. I went to one in Orlando a couple of years ago and realized it had no way to compete with James Coney around here. Mary Lee Donuts still exists, there is one on San Felipe near the Amegy Bank building. I think its a Mary Lee, but the more I think about it, the more I think might be something different.
  23. Yeah because every other major city has managed to completely eliminate the homeless and rats. Manhattan is spotless, and people in DC give new condos to people so there is no homeless. In Philly, its almost clinical its so clean there. No rats at all. I think the point of the article is to point at that there are places where efforts could be improved. Find me a downtown with no homeless and I'm pretty sure you are using the word downtown loosely.
  24. Hardee's is gross. Glad we don't have around here, although really wouldn't make any difference either way. I've always thought of it as a poor man's jack in the Box. Yeah that good. I remember that Gatti's near A&M. Went there once after a swim meet. Remember having a good time. I think we were there late enough that SNL was on and I remember Dennis Miller was still the host of the Weekend Update. Oh, how time flies.
  25. I read the same article, thought it was kind of disgusting to hear how the city of Houston had let the park rundown in such a short time. Its not really a good sign if they plan to use the same type management whenever they get moving with the new downtown park. I have to say, I actually like how the Houston Press is always not afraid to put articles like this out there. Not sure if always helps, but does "put the word out on the street"
