  1. Samagon, you're right, that house on two lots is enormous! I'm guessing he plans to stick around the East End for a while, considering the style is also very specific to seemingly one person's tastes. If I were to sell and move, I'd still stay in the east end as well, just relocate a little closer to the light rail.
  2. been to the grove a few times at night, once for drinks, twice to eat - has always been more fashionable for the dinner crowd for sure. don't think the shorts and t shirt would do too well in the downstairs bar, but i think during the day that's probably different too. the treehouse upstairs is pretty cool in my opinion. that deck is pretty large and its nice. one of the pics someone had was from the upstairs portion, and i can definitely see sitting out there during the day having a few drinks and it not being fancy at all. the other part that i think opens soon (the lake house) will also have beer and wine and i think that is very casual over there too.
  3. yeah i don't really mind what they gave up outside of Patton - Luke was without a spot, so it was good for him to find a new home. Pitching is a huge need though and I don't see what we have left to trade if anything outside of Chris Burke, which would get you about nothing. I don't mind seeing Everett get non tendered, he just could not hit worth anything. I do like that with Loretta coming back, you do have some flexibility on the left side of the infield. Tejada can always move to 3rd, or Loretta can play 2nd if Matsui struggles. Right now our rotation is what though - Roy, Wandy, Backe, Sampson, and Woody? Not exactly the kind of rotation that you can count on....
  4. i work right next to jones hall in pennzoil tower and on the exterior, i love jones hall. clean lines, and just fits in the block very nicely. as for the inside, i have to admit, its been a while since i've been in there - stomp maybe 10 years ago? so my opinion probably doesn't matter, but i would prefer that if there were a way to make it more updated on the inside, i would love to see it stay.
  5. red scare you are right about the patios being packed, but at the same time, i'm still loving the smoking ban. i love to watch college football during my saturdays and the best place is sports bars where you can watch multiple games going on. the thing i hated though was coming home around 6-ish when the game died down and just reeking of the smell. these days, i get home and feel ok, other than of course the effect of the alcohol. i don't think i would say any of the places i used to go to seem anymore empty, but people have definitely gotten used to going outside. and since most of my friends don't smoke, we're enjoying hitting some spots we used to like, but avoided during the week because of the smoke. loved the pizza and darts at keneally's, but hated the smell. now we go once a week. i agree not everyone is loving it, but for some of us that love to grab a few drinks during the week and not have to deal with smoke hangover, its nice. and thank god for patios for the rest.
  6. I know the Houston ban is scheduled to go into place Spetember 1st, but how quickly do you all think the effects will take place? There are quite a few bars in Houston and I just don't see them all flipping the switch like that. The only way it would seem to take place is if the city is aggressive enough to enforce it or else it turns into another "anti homeless" midtown type ordinance, which is never enforced. does anyone know if police officers are able to enforce it or is it a different agency? is the bar fined as well (which to me would make the law actually work) or the invidual smoking? If the bar has no stake in it, i can see them just turning the other way.
  7. yeah i drive by there everyday on the way to work - still looks like a lot of work to be done to meet that timeline, but i'm guessing the garage is probably the toughest part of all and the rain probably hasn't helped. some of the basic park structures are being built right now. i'm hoping they can meet that timeline, because jan 2008 seems like its just around the corner.
  8. exactly - i never pay to park for astros games. the street is free and the lot at i think mckinney and st emmanuel is the one that cracks me up the most. $5 to park there and the entire street around it is free. i parked there last night on the street and saw people piling in to the lot - i think its perception that a lot is somehow "safer." i personally don't think parking is a huge issue with taking away that one lot. if there is a combination of events on one day, then maybe there will be a pinch, but the same thing somewhat happens for rockets/ astros games. i know they are separated, but some of that middle area is used by both users. i think its great to see so many people walking around the near east end to astros games on game day, adds a definite festive feeling. as for bars and other development, i think its already on its way somewhat - next to warehouse live, i saw a sign for a liquor permit for a "lucky's pub" - typically when there are show's at warehouse, there is no where to go right before or after the show except for the bus which is across 59. if a stadium opens on the east side of 59, i think you will see a couple of restaurants and bars give it a shot. as for stadium sound, i live in the near east end - i can hear some announcer noise from robertson when there are games there. but i didn't move in close to downtown for it to be quiet country living anyway.
  9. clemens always has been and always will be a prostitute when it comes to choosing team. that doesn't mean he isn't a great pitcher, because he is. but he always manages to get what he wants and the stringing along of the astros is just what he loves to do best. i loved this quote he threw out there too: "You feel like coming back home," said Clemens, who won his only two World Series championships with the Yankees in 1999 and 2000. "And you feel like you're welcomed. You know what it's all about here. Uh, you were back home. You just didn't care anymore to be there.
  10. No Violence in Boston Still none Actually sounds like the same as Houston stats
  11. i believe that your "urban crate and barrel" is already in the works based off of previous articles. i think that the company that owns the clothing boutique wish is supposed to open a lifestyle store in the sakowitz building - as to when that will happen, who knows, but i believe that is supposed to have more of your plates/ glasses/ furniture type retail. don't remember where the article was that had that, but i remember seeing that before.
  12. east side, best mexican restaurants = stories about the pools? can we take a little break from the "the east end used to be nice but now is a run down crap hole" stories for a little while? it seems like every thread in the east end forum is getting bumped up against for some random complaining.
  13. Colts will not make it to the super bowl. that run defense is horrific - yes ron dayne looked good yesterday, but also against a team that has been getting drilled by the run. the jags went for i think 400 yards on the ground a few weeks ago. if the colts run into a team with even a decent running game, its over. the nfc is unpredictable - dallas looks like world beaters, gets smacked by new orleans and philly. new orleans got beat by the redskins a week ago. philly is playing with jeff garcia. bears have a great record, but who knows what grossman is ever going to do. i would think this is a year that the AFC should have a significant edge.
  14. Rocbar has been open for several weeks now - Roc Bar you may have seen them working on Mosaic, which I don't think is ready quite yet.
  15. I wish Adrian Peterson would still be available by the time the Texans draft, but I think he'll be gone. Troy Smith will not go to the Cardinals, Leinart is their guy. I hate Notre Dame, but I think from a draft perspective, Brady Quinn is the more NFL ready prospect over Troy Smith. I think the Raiders will take a QB this year. I would like to see the Texans take Kevin Kolb in the 3rd round and bring in a vet (Jake the snake would suffice I suppose) for a year or two and then start grooming Kolb for the future. Its the same needs as always for the Texans - the OL and RB spots.
  16. well purpura pulls off a trade but gives up too much for a guy who has had one good season. jason jennings for taveras, hirsch, and bucholz. i didn't mind seeing any of those guys get traded, but for the right player (when it was garland, I was ok with it). I guess after pettite, purpura was desparate, and now we have a guy that has only 1 year left on his contract.
  17. Love that NC State bias, i mean pride.... On another note, this thread brings back some memories. i always loved the oilers growing up and even if they eventually always ripped my heart out in the end, it was one of the best memories I have. the house of pain days, the ridiculous jerry "the man in black" glanville days, the run and shoot, jack pardee, gilbride vs. buddy ryans, baby gate, lorenzo white running wild in the snow, ernest givens, drew hill, ray childress, warren moon - even those of you who hate bud adams have to admit it was one of those teams you loved while still loving to hate. i stayed with them when they left houston because there was still a core of players from houston right when they left, and even if they now have basically no one still there except jeff fisher, its a team i still support over houston, even if i live here. yeah bud adams was a crooked and stubborn man, but i don't cheer owners, i cheer teams. fisher and floyd reese are two of the best in the game at what they do. i hated seeing mcnair, rolle, and mason leave, but that's the business. the music city miracle, i was in a bar in corpus and it was full of people watching - a lot of people cheering then when it looked like they would lose, the comments came "same old oilers, always let you down" - sure enough they pull it off and everyone goes nuts. i hated seeing the support die because of one person (old bud) - and i do follow the texans closely, but i still haven't gotten that feeling i did with the oilers, that no matter what happened, it was always an entertaining ride. i know entertaining doesn't = wins, but at least it was always about more than arguing about David Carr for the 1,000th time.
  18. what's your example of this, that purpura has blown big deals? first of all, the only major negotiations purpura has been involved with is carlos beltran and roger clemens last year. that's it - a few trade talks during last years deadline aside. the beltran situations was blown by everyone in power during that time. mclane has always been a meddler, which is why gerry h left in the first place. he never had the power in the end, it was always about having to get things past mclane. i am no purpura lover, he is a middle of the road GM at best - doesn't know how to orchestrate a trade. however, when it comes to signing a player for X amount of $'s, that's a McLane call. All these big stars? Name another one who is lining up based on what you mention? Lee is here because we paid the $'s - the fact he owns a ranch nearby is secondary. We lost Jeff Kent because of $'s. Beltran played the Astros perfectly. And Pettite is gone because someone in the organization thought they could get him for 12 and not 14. I'm blame the Garland mess on Purpura - he just is useless on trades. Pettite is based on McLane. As much as I sometimes disagree with Richard Justice from the Chronicle, read his articles as a somewhat insider. These decisions where $2 MM is the separation comes down to the owner.
  19. As much as I think Purpura is incompetent, this is a McLane move. A classic one at that. Sticking to a $12 million offer when you know it takes $14 to get it done. Instead he cheap skates his way again and loses a bonefide top line pitcher and has a huge hole to fill now. Idiotic. Now Piece of Purpura has to go out and wheel and deal for an inferior pitcher that will cost as much, plus give up talent. Real smart McLane, real smart.
  20. This always turns into a "he said this, he said that" scenario, but if what pettite's agent said is true, the astros dropped the ball on this one. $14 mil for one year with andy is a deal in the current market - overpaid, but that's the going rate this year. way to go mclane and purpura, now its on to plan D.
  21. The 2nd place in the ROY means about nothing. His hitting skills are questionable - there is potential - but he has yet to put it all together. His OBP is .329 lifetime, way too low for a lead off guy. His strikeouts to walks ratio was over 2.5 to 1. He's a career .284 hitter - last season he had a grand total of 1 HR and 25 extra base hits. I'm not saying I don't think he has the tools to be a great Ichiro-ish player. But Ichiro learned how to get one base consistently and turn the speed into more than bunt singles. In a lineup that lacks power aside from the 3 and 4 spots, its hard to have just a "speed" guy. You have to realize that right now the Astros have power only in the 3 and 4 spots - the rest of the lineup is completely unknown. Lee will help, but the 7 and 8 spots are black holes and even if one does get on base, Taveras can't get them home. You can't count on just bunt singling in runs when there are two outs. Burke starting should bring a little more power if he takes over the CF spot. He has some of the same flaws as Taveras in terms of plate discipline, but his power is substantially better. As for Garland, he doesn't "prevent" the Astros from resigning Pettite - its up to Drayton whether he wants to make that payment or not. A rotation of Oswalt, Pettite, Garland, and Williams would be among the best in baseball - its up to McLane whether he wants to pay for it.
  22. That speed though required him to get on base. Willy has the potential to be a great leadoff man, but he still was striking out too much and didn't walk enough. great contact/ slap player, but his lack of ability to hit for any kind of power consistently is his biggest downfall. if anything, i think his defense is what will be missed most. his hitting streak last year was great, but he also had worked himself out the lineup at one point. i think he will be good over the years, but i don't mind this deal if it means chris burke has a spot everyday in the lineup now.
  23. No I don't think they would give up a 1st and 3rd, but I don't think they would have to after the season. Schaub will be a restricted free agent after the season and can sign anywhere, the Falcons will just have right of first refusal. If he were to sign elsewhere I believe the possible draft compensation would be additional picks for the Falcons, but not come from the Texans (supplemental picks I believe). I agree its not all Carr - he has virtually no running game and his line is and always has been a joke. That being said, he doesn't really show much progress each season, and I think at this point he needs a change of scenery as bad as anyone.
  24. - oakland has aaron brooks - granted, he melts down. he also is a QB that been to the playoffs with the saints (yes, the saints) and thrown for more than 20 TD's 4 times as compared to 0 for carr. - simms ruptured his spleen and it out for the season. injured doesn't count, although i think its a wash who is worse simms or carr. simms had flashes of potential last year, kind of like his whole career at UT. - minnesota - brad johnson had a horrible week, with 4 picks and no TD's. However, for a short term QB, I'd take Brad Johnson, a QB that thrown for over 3K yards as recent as two years ago any day over Carr. buffalo - JP Losman - they whipped the Texans last year and he threw for 340 against them this year and they won. I think this one would be a wash as well versus Carr, not overwhelmingly strong for either side. cleveland - frye's first year as full time starter. can't tell if he's any good yet or not. (this is carr's 5th) detroit - i'd take kitna over carr right now. not a great QB by any means, but he managed to help the bengals be respectable again before leaving to detroit. chicago - grossman is a joke right now, they have greise as a backup who is better than carr and they are also 10-2. while i agree there are a few where you could flip the situation and it might be the same, i don't think any of those teams will be clamoring for carr other than to have another person to compete for the job.
