bicycled past the pig stand today and noticed that the
two wall mounted wooden pig waiters are missing.
i think they had the location numbers on them...
hope they went to a good place.

there are a few pieces of furniture from the old place. the neatest and
most upsetting thing is the old oversized ledger books on the bar. i
enjoyed looking through them but couldn't help thinking of someone
spilling a drink on them.
i would describe it as a cross between a watered down version of the
old notsuoh and the engine room. the walls have some modern/minimalist
artwork and similar lighting to the engine room, which i am not a fan of
--- the club, not the lighting. my favorite thing there is the huge wall map
behind the stage, makes for interesting photos.
maybe it will take time to build up the amount of clutter again, hopefully
that's it. i would really love to see this place grow into the desciption
above. i do think it's possible!

...geez, no one's intrigued about that photo of a model coaster I posted? It was on display at the IAAPA convention in November this year, the construction crew who will be erecting this structure were very loose lipped about its intended destination near Houston.
it would be nice to get another wooden coaster!
just wasn't sure if this was a serious rumor or not...
would be happy if it was though!

If you guys would like to see what the location where Jalapeno's Restaurant is looks like go to this website: http://maps.a9.com/ Then click on Houston, and finally put in this address in the location box: 2702 Kirby Dr, Houston, TX
You can use this site to look at a lot of streets in many major cites across the USA.
that A9 thing is pretty wild. i just saw my cat in the window ofmy apartment (pictured there from the street) --- creepy!
the a9 maps site no longer works.

I still hate Tillman Frititta.
good heavens! you say this and mention that you have had
personal dealings with him. is there no way you can give a
generalized non-selfincriminating example?

i *hope* that wasn't a AAA demolition guy - they seemed to be nice folks in the past
the only way i know of to see about HPD incidents is to check their statistics (which have a lag of about a month or two, anyhow).
this area is beat 1A20, but i doubt anyone can get information that freely.
anyhow, it's odd that the guy was being secretive, and threw in the little story of the arrests (although they might have been hauling large amounts to make some money).
i get the feeling the uppity overall guy wasn't with AAA. actually,
he was pretty fancy and the AAA fellas have been polite before.
i almost get the feeling that he was the man with the salvage
rights that he referred to.

Torvald, Casinos tend to frown on people taking pictures of their establishments, ESPECIALLY on the inside of them. Outside, take all you want. Casino floor snapping a few shots, ummmmm Vinne and Tony would like to have a word with you.
ah, never been in one...

I have to say that they have done a nice job in giving the old girl a bit of a face lift. He has added a beautiful new porte cochere at one entrance, and has dressed up the interior a bit. However, the best addition has to be the new Aquarium that sits over the pool area. The 3 story water slide goes through the aquarium. Very cool. And, of course, most of his restaurants are included on the site. I know there is a Vic and Anthony's and a Grotto that are new since the last time a visited.
any photos?
Ok??ok!

first of all, i was there today and spoke briefly with another HAIF person.
i didn't identify myself at the time which was rude and i apologize. if it
was you, please PM me.
anyhow, we were both there for the same reason: bricks.
this morning i may have found a few.
yet, when i returned an hour or so later there was another fella in overalls,
hard hat, glasses and a pony tail. he was not standing with the demolition
company, he was at the side looking for pieces, within the gate. we was
going to fresh piles of rubble and removing the detail work with a crow bar
and placing them in a pile. he had a dust mask on so i made eye contact
with him and tried to get his attention. i was interested to see if he was in
fact with a preservation society or a resale person. i called out to him with
no response. the other person who was there went over to the pile and
pointed at the stack politely. the overalled man waved his hand for them
to step back.
when we did not leave, he approached us. we asked if this was a preservation
effort of some sort and he wouldn't say... he did say that "he worked for
someone with exclusive rights to pieces recovered from the building". he said
they were not allowed to take it out, only to retrieve it once it fell. i said i was
happy that he was salvaging the pieces and they weren't just going into the
regular bin to be hauled off. he asked the other HAIFer and i if we had arrived
together and i said no, we were interested in maybe getting a brick, for nostalgic
purposes. he then let us know that we could go to a brick retailer off of I-10
and get the same bricks... which would lead me to believe that he's not a
preservation kind of guy. we mentioned that we just wanted "a brick" from the
building for nostalgic/romanticized reasons.
he then said the person with the salvage rights (not sure if that's the term) "would
be pretty mad if people were taking things, not mad but it wouldn't be good". he
also stated that "some one or some people were arrested saturday morning for
taking bricks. not just bricks but wood and metal items".
is there a way to verify if someone has been recently arrested at the site for looting/
trespassing, saturday or otherwise. during the time we spoke to him the demolition
men were not around so i could not verify the gentleman with them.

No
just found it odd that someone would share something as
intensely personal as that, unless it was already commonly
known.
quite unusual.
-
...my fear is that without any protections, those sidewalk-hugging historic retail strips that are currently along Main and Fannin near there will get bulldozed for more "place holders". That would be a double tragedy and one that couldn't be reversed.
hear hear!

Decades later, he deals with what happened by taking photographs of himself in which he's seen committing suicide in a variety of convoluted ways.
did the source say whether the work had been publicly displayed?

I suppose, generally speaking. But I've read enough of her work now to want to distance myself from her by about the same extent as I distance myself from the Libertarian Party. Too much extremism.
i have a bunch of old objectivism philosophy books
left from my ex... was about to ship 'em your way!

woops got you confused...
thought it was funny!
the photo is from little britain...
an awesome show if you haven't seen it!

I have an interest in why people do the things they do. Especially when it doesn't appear to be a objectively rational course of action. After all, if so many people value something for a reason that is presently beyond my comprehension, then perhaps I'd stand to gain a fuller comprehension by challenging those people...or not...but hey, I tried. ...I guess that just reflects on what a pathetic and shallow person that I evidently am, according to you, oh wise and infallible one.
fella, are you an objectivist?
not generally speaking but an ayn rand type?
in torvald's original thread, she mentions that she couldn't find the original thread...who you callin' a lady ms. wendyps?
am i really that eloquent?

never went into that store until a o-worker was registered there.
was sort of turned off by the building.
that store was overpriced and the items there were really odd...
not artistically odd but honking ugly odd.
not surprised to see it go.

i'm am sure it will make more sense once we see what replaces it.

looking up the name but over 100 years old, it was due to get a historic places medallion soon...
a friend called and said it was in montrose. rode my bike past st. thomas, the greek orthodox, bering-memorial and the episcopal church on w. alabama... just in time to get another call from her that find it was the church in freedman's town.
here it is:

...see if the bum was indeed capable of looking away, and could stop his uncontrollable "drooling".
it wasn't as much drooling as just his mouth was really
wet the whole time. not sure how he did that. he wasn't
licking it or anything but it was all the way around, maybe
it was a chapstick sort of issue but it was obvious from afar.
Also, if you were a female I would immediately withdraw my "sponge him off" statement. If you are a male though, it stays up. No pun intended. I don't believe anyone here would put a "gay" spin on it, if you were male though. Except maybe a "he thought you looked pretty cute in those jeans."i guess i just think that no matter what a lesbian, straight
female, straight or gay male would be grossed out.
it's always the ones you DON'T want...
-
..and remember, we'll always have Hulda
true.
I guess I should ask a qualifying question Torvald. Are you male or female, this will help me determine what is right or wrong in this "arousal" situation.it shouldn't matter... an unwanted arousal situation is
an unwanted arousal situation. if i answer that, folks
will either put a gay or feminist slant to it... either one
will be a whole another debate.

Did you ever think he didn't like the way you were looking at him?
We'll have to ask 'isuredid' if he has these problems, I don't think all the people in this forum combined, spend more time in the library than he does.
"isuredid" was not with me at the library today. again, you are taking
this very personally. i am not aware if it occurs everyday, only that it
happened today. if you would like to still ask isuredid, you may. i used
to spend much time at the downtown library. perhaps the size of it
diffused any impact the homeless people had there.
i was trying not to look at him as i alluded in the other thread where you
are lambasting me. i am trying to be respectful as to the condition he
was in while while leering at me. the polite thing to say would be that
he was a bit aroused. i was in the mood to check out a book, not deal
with that this morning.
first that, now i have mark f. barnes on my case.
-
Well, Torvald, did you feel threatened by the way the shaved-head dude was "checking you out" ? It's ok, everyone has some level of prejudice against something...
I happened to see a little pot and kettle action goin' in your original post Torvald, it may have escaped you as you were writing it.
i'm grumpy. i mention a bit that i am grumpy or crotchety.
if i owned a store and you came in just to to use the bathroom and
switch out your digs, i would be annoyed. if six people in a row did
the same (plus taking my packaging), it would annoy me more.
i don't think i would spend my time helping out a segment of the
population i was prejudiced against. i wasn't feeling threatened,
just annoyed to be leered at with some major drooling intensity for
about 10 minutes by some fella that needed a good hosing down.

This coming from a person who posts about the travesty of discrimination in other threads.
A classic example of a hypocritical act is to criticize others for carrying out some action while carrying out the same action oneself....
In simple terms the pot calling the kettle black!!!!
"A classic example of a hypocritical act is to criticize others for carrying
out some action while carrying out the same action oneself...."
the only action i suppose i considered that we both had at the library was
the need to go to the bathroom. all folks do it, so we all have it in common.
i was there to get books, they were not.
i am not sure what you are talking about so i am not exactly sure what to
address. do i really post so much about travesty and humiliation in other
threads? perhaps i am a more sensitive person than i thought! i basically
just write about what i see everyday whether it is while riding my bike,
going about houston or at work. i spend much time in transit and am
basically just writing what i observe.
by saying that i disliked the homeless using the library restroom as a
personal shower or rest stop is not discrimination. by saying that i didn't
like the fella leering at me was not due to him being homeless, it was that
i wasn't interested and it was pretty intense leering.
as i have written in other threads, i have volunteered my time in the past
to work with the homeless. not give them change but donate clothing
and food items and devote free time to assist in programs to help them
improve their lives, get help and improve themselves --- not sustain a life
where you wake up on a bench to trek across town to wash yourself in
the library sink before sleeping on another bench.
i have never said anything harsh toward any other class, race or religion
of people on this site. you can look if you'd like, i would say if i have
been critical of any segment of people it has been against graffiti artists
or folks who tear down historic buildings --- yet it has never been as
bad as leaving them to die in the streets, etc... as some folks have said
about other segments of the population here on HAIF.
come to think of it, i have never personally attacked anyone on this site
other thana partial thread that was deleted when someone thought police
officersdeserved to die because of their profession.
