  1. bicycled past the pig stand today and noticed that the two wall mounted wooden pig waiters are missing. i think they had the location numbers on them... hope they went to a good place.
  2. there are a few pieces of furniture from the old place. the neatest and most upsetting thing is the old oversized ledger books on the bar. i enjoyed looking through them but couldn't help thinking of someone spilling a drink on them. i would describe it as a cross between a watered down version of the old notsuoh and the engine room. the walls have some modern/minimalist artwork and similar lighting to the engine room, which i am not a fan of --- the club, not the lighting. my favorite thing there is the huge wall map behind the stage, makes for interesting photos. maybe it will take time to build up the amount of clutter again, hopefully that's it. i would really love to see this place grow into the desciption above. i do think it's possible!
  3. it would be nice to get another wooden coaster! just wasn't sure if this was a serious rumor or not... would be happy if it was though!
  4. i get the feeling the uppity overall guy wasn't with AAA. actually, he was pretty fancy and the AAA fellas have been polite before. i almost get the feeling that he was the man with the salvage rights that he referred to.
  5. first of all, i was there today and spoke briefly with another HAIF person. i didn't identify myself at the time which was rude and i apologize. if it was you, please PM me. anyhow, we were both there for the same reason: bricks. this morning i may have found a few. yet, when i returned an hour or so later there was another fella in overalls, hard hat, glasses and a pony tail. he was not standing with the demolition company, he was at the side looking for pieces, within the gate. we was going to fresh piles of rubble and removing the detail work with a crow bar and placing them in a pile. he had a dust mask on so i made eye contact with him and tried to get his attention. i was interested to see if he was in fact with a preservation society or a resale person. i called out to him with no response. the other person who was there went over to the pile and pointed at the stack politely. the overalled man waved his hand for them to step back. when we did not leave, he approached us. we asked if this was a preservation effort of some sort and he wouldn't say... he did say that "he worked for someone with exclusive rights to pieces recovered from the building". he said they were not allowed to take it out, only to retrieve it once it fell. i said i was happy that he was salvaging the pieces and they weren't just going into the regular bin to be hauled off. he asked the other HAIFer and i if we had arrived together and i said no, we were interested in maybe getting a brick, for nostalgic purposes. he then let us know that we could go to a brick retailer off of I-10 and get the same bricks... which would lead me to believe that he's not a preservation kind of guy. we mentioned that we just wanted "a brick" from the building for nostalgic/romanticized reasons. he then said the person with the salvage rights (not sure if that's the term) "would be pretty mad if people were taking things, not mad but it wouldn't be good". he also stated that "some one or some people were arrested saturday morning for taking bricks. not just bricks but wood and metal items". is there a way to verify if someone has been recently arrested at the site for looting/ trespassing, saturday or otherwise. during the time we spoke to him the demolition men were not around so i could not verify the gentleman with them.
  6. just found it odd that someone would share something as intensely personal as that, unless it was already commonly known. quite unusual.
  7. did the source say whether the work had been publicly displayed?
  8. i have a bunch of old objectivism philosophy books left from my ex... was about to ship 'em your way!
  9. thought it was funny! the photo is from little britain... an awesome show if you haven't seen it!
  10. fella, are you an objectivist? not generally speaking but an ayn rand type? who you callin' a lady ms. wendyps? am i really that eloquent?
  11. never went into that store until a o-worker was registered there. was sort of turned off by the building. that store was overpriced and the items there were really odd... not artistically odd but honking ugly odd. not surprised to see it go.
  12. i'm am sure it will make more sense once we see what replaces it.
  13. looking up the name but over 100 years old, it was due to get a historic places medallion soon... a friend called and said it was in montrose. rode my bike past st. thomas, the greek orthodox, bering-memorial and the episcopal church on w. alabama... just in time to get another call from her that find it was the church in freedman's town. here it is: Friendship Baptist Church 1313 Matthews St
  14. it wasn't as much drooling as just his mouth was really wet the whole time. not sure how he did that. he wasn't licking it or anything but it was all the way around, maybe it was a chapstick sort of issue but it was obvious from afar. i guess i just think that no matter what a lesbian, straight female, straight or gay male would be grossed out. it's always the ones you DON'T want...
  15. true. it shouldn't matter... an unwanted arousal situation is an unwanted arousal situation. if i answer that, folks will either put a gay or feminist slant to it... either one will be a whole another debate.
  16. "isuredid" was not with me at the library today. again, you are taking this very personally. i am not aware if it occurs everyday, only that it happened today. if you would like to still ask isuredid, you may. i used to spend much time at the downtown library. perhaps the size of it diffused any impact the homeless people had there. i was trying not to look at him as i alluded in the other thread where you are lambasting me. i am trying to be respectful as to the condition he was in while while leering at me. the polite thing to say would be that he was a bit aroused. i was in the mood to check out a book, not deal with that this morning. first that, now i have mark f. barnes on my case.
  17. i'm grumpy. i mention a bit that i am grumpy or crotchety. if i owned a store and you came in just to to use the bathroom and switch out your digs, i would be annoyed. if six people in a row did the same (plus taking my packaging), it would annoy me more. i don't think i would spend my time helping out a segment of the population i was prejudiced against. i wasn't feeling threatened, just annoyed to be leered at with some major drooling intensity for about 10 minutes by some fella that needed a good hosing down.
  18. "A classic example of a hypocritical act is to criticize others for carrying out some action while carrying out the same action oneself...." the only action i suppose i considered that we both had at the library was the need to go to the bathroom. all folks do it, so we all have it in common. i was there to get books, they were not. i am not sure what you are talking about so i am not exactly sure what to address. do i really post so much about travesty and humiliation in other threads? perhaps i am a more sensitive person than i thought! i basically just write about what i see everyday whether it is while riding my bike, going about houston or at work. i spend much time in transit and am basically just writing what i observe. by saying that i disliked the homeless using the library restroom as a personal shower or rest stop is not discrimination. by saying that i didn't like the fella leering at me was not due to him being homeless, it was that i wasn't interested and it was pretty intense leering. as i have written in other threads, i have volunteered my time in the past to work with the homeless. not give them change but donate clothing and food items and devote free time to assist in programs to help them improve their lives, get help and improve themselves --- not sustain a life where you wake up on a bench to trek across town to wash yourself in the library sink before sleeping on another bench. i have never said anything harsh toward any other class, race or religion of people on this site. you can look if you'd like, i would say if i have been critical of any segment of people it has been against graffiti artists or folks who tear down historic buildings --- yet it has never been as bad as leaving them to die in the streets, etc... as some folks have said about other segments of the population here on HAIF. come to think of it, i have never personally attacked anyone on this site other thana partial thread that was deleted when someone thought police officersdeserved to die because of their profession.
  19. since the downtown post office has been under renovation i had not been to the library. so i went to my local branch in montrose. i arrived 15 minutes early and within 5 minutes there were abut 6 homeless fellas lining up in front of the door. when the branch opened they filed into the men's room and during the next half hour emerged --- some with wet hair and one with a fresh gallon container of water. a few switched out their items from their old plastic bags with new library bags (for books) and left. i know they have set up recent ordinances as far as cleanliness and behaviorin libraries, some aimed at keeping the locations from being a destinationsimilar to covenant house (which is nearby and free). i would feel less odd ifthey also used the library and were cleaning up in preparation to look at books or use the computer. in fairness, i suppose the only way it really affected me was not wanting to usethe restroom there and getting the creeps when one fella with random parts of his head shaved kept checking me out.
  20. saw the "for sale" sign covered by a texas asbestos removal sign... is this a clue if the building is going for a revamp or demolition? (did a search and couldn't find another current thread.)
