Westbury is hidden? Wha? I would consider maybe Garden Villas or Shepherd Forest to be hidden....
-
Does anyone else find this kitchen laughably hideous?
It is pretty horrendous. Bad choice of colors and styles.
-
You aren't allowed to look at any of my projects! I don't think I could take the criticism!
flipper
Yours aren't nearly as bad as this one. I think my biggest complaint about your houses is that your kitchen cabs look like the ones you can buy off the shelf at Home Despot, even though they're custom.
-
The house itself looks pretty cool but the "rehab" is an abomination! The Reagan administration called...they want their antique brass flush mount cheap-o Wal-Mart ceiling fans back. I don't care if the stove is a Jenn Air (which isn't that good in the first place) whoever did the install needs to get a clue....its sticking out and it looks like there's a big gap to the side of it. What's up with the faucets in the bathroom? Those single lever jobbies look like something out of a motel. Then that drop in bathtub...as a shower? LEAK CITY! The tub surround will be full of mold and rotten wood in 5 years or less.

What's everyone's opinion on:
http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Fordo...72/product.html
I love the way this sectional looks, but I'm hesitant buying something so large/expensive, online, sight unseen. Overstock says it's high quality, etc, etc, but still, what if it's not comfortable, what if the leather feels cheap, etc. It's a long shot, but anyone have any suggestions for me?
Well...it looks like its made by somebody called Fordon. See if you can't find the same thing locally and take a look at it in person. I ordered a rug from Overstock....the first one that came in, I wasn't pleased with. The second one I was quite pleased with.

If scratch & dent is ok, try Macy's Warehouse on 45. It's hit or miss, but you never know.
Nearby, Finger Furniture has a HUGE warehouse basement full of scratch & dent furniture
I am ALL ABOUT Macy's Warehouse and the Finger Clearance basement place. Not all of it is scratch and dent...some of it is discontinued or overstocked stuff in perfect condition but at a discount from retail.

over the air they have 3 independent feeds. the hd one, the sd one and the spanish one. are you getting it from satellite/cable?

The Rothko Chapel and assorted pieces by Rothko from the Menil collection will be featured tonight on Simon Schama's "Power of Art" episode about Mark Rothko. Show starts at 10 pm on KUHT. Mies' Seagram building and Philip Johnson's Four Seasons restaurant are also heavily featured. If you can, watch it in high def.
Was it broadcast in HD? I think they're in the middle of a switchover/consolidation at the station, and they're broadcasting the same signal from their HD digital and analog transmitters. I recorded this show from the HD channel, and about 2 seconds in it downconverted from HD to SD.
Not a lot of coverage of the Chapel or Houston.

I may have fallen in love today. http://www.har.com/5882597 I am a bit concerned about the surrounding area. There were lots of people sort of wandering aimlessly in the streets.
Anyone want to weigh in?
Looks like a good house as long as it hasn't been the victim of a bad remuddler...the shots of the kitchen make me worry, but its hard to say given the low resolution. Houses over there seem to have been built to last, but if somebody has done a hackjob on it, then you're looking at some major issues to fix down the road.
-
Thanks for the advice. Does the same apply for housing outside the loop, say in Pearland?
Suburbia is even worse. There's TONS of empty land to build more houses on just up the road. The mindset of most buyers in suburbia is something like this....why buy an old used house when I can get a new one just up the road?
-
Anyone have any opinions on the Jackson Hill Flats? I'm looking for a condo inside the loop and I really don't want to go higher than 170k if possible because I'm probably only going to be a here another year or so but my lease is due and taxes are killing me plus I hate wasting money in rent.
For the price, they appear pretty good and I like the location. Any red flags here that you all know of? Or any other suggestions in that range?
You just need to keep renting if you're only going to be in it for a year. You're either going to waste money on rent, or you're going to waste money paying closing costs and commission to fluffy bunnys. You're not going to get enough appreciation in a year, espescially in a NEW construction condo where you can't do anything to add value to cover the expenses of buying.
If you're just hell bent on buying, find some terrible dump of a condo that you can get for under market, fix it up, and maybe....MAYBE make a little bit of profit on when you sell.

Update: The building is almost completely torn down as of yesterday.
Indeed. It is now Kaplan's BenFlattened.

Is this the house on Parkwood shown above? http://search.har.com/engine/dispSearch.cfm?mlnum=2020988

As I suspected, it was ripped off from this government site.

My sense, borne out by what exterminators have told me, is that they are more likely to inhabit cool, dark, places or places where they can find water. They like bathrooms for this reason. They also like electronics, maybe for the warmth or because they have some sensitivity to electromagnetic fields. I have replaced two phones in my office this past year because they were full of little German cockroaches. (!) It's not just me saying so; Matsushita has recently released a printed circuit board impregnated with pyrethrins (roach poison) to minimize damage to gear caused by short circuits from zapped roaches.
The Nundini report said the roaches were found behind posters, unused equipment, and the plastic wrap box.
Interesting. I've nearly ALWAYS seen them in kitchens in houses.
-
I have roaches in my kitchen, and I eat there every day. Roaches are a fact of life in Houston, and it didn't sound like they were on food prep areas. Besides, you have to decide, do you want poison spray everywhere, or can you live with roaches?
OF COURSE the roaches were on the food prep areas....because that's where the food is. Roaches don't like to hang out in the living room and watch TV...they live and crap indiscriminately in the KITCHEN because that's where the food is.
-
Ack. A link to the story re Nundini's.
Wow. I knew I had heard Marvin rattle off their name, but I forgot that their problem was ROACHES everywhere....I thought it was something more tame like slime in the ice machine.
-
Nundini Imported Food Store - Would be a "find" as an imported food store, a deli, or as a gelateria - and it's all three.
They were, unfortunately, on the rat and roach report a while back.

The simple answer is to look for a copy of Howard Barnstone's book _The Architecture of John F. Staub_. That will get you a
Wow. That book is going for $150+ online.

I'll have to side with spaceage on this one. I have learned that a cardinal mod rule is to not paint wood paneling, and that's just what they did.
The bedroom #2 light fixture kicks ass and it's no longer there. The new fixtures are pretty boring, but I wouldn't expect flippers to add $750 PH-5s or anything.
I thought those two items were keepers as well. The paneling didn't look like the standard issue, loud and tacky knotty pine...looked like some sort of expensive-ish hardwood in fact.
-
So how hard (expensive) is it to repair terrazo anyway?
Good question...the install process is pretty messy and labor intensive....lots and lots of grinding of the floor to get it nice and smooth and pretty. Repair...would probably involve grinding in the repaired sections, but it may be a total delicate flower trying to match the color & aggregate size of the original.

I think the new Accord coupe is an attractive car. Too bad they aren't putting RWD or AWD underneath it. FWD sucks.
