  1. I moved into Willowbend in June 1965. I lived directly across from Johnston Junior High.

I had forgotten about the Benellis at Westbury Yamaha. I was more into mini enduros and rupps.

    From 1969

From mid 60s What trip to Westbury Square was complete unless you stopped here on the way home.

we moved in 9 years later.....do you remember Ben's Schwinn Shop on Willowbend, on the other side of the tracks?

  2. Here is a pic of how the S. Post Oak Burger King looked like when I grew up. Forget the snow :) Still remember buying cigarettes for my dad for 35 cents from the machine in the dining room. Back then they would undo the top of the cellophane wrapping and slip in a Burger King book of matches. Yea, believe it or not the entire dining room would be filled with kids eating lunch with most of the adults puffing away on a Saturday afternoon. Never bothered me growing up.

what year did you move into Willowbend?

  3. I recall the best of times:

    • an nut job blowing himself up at Poe Elementary, and taking his son and several others with him...the namesake of your elementary school
    • the police digging up the bodies of 27 boys from a boat storage shed off Hiram Clark...they were runaways back then, not missing and exploited children
    • colored only waiting rooms in the Medical Towers Building
    • my elementary school principal welcoming the new darkie children to our school

    good times indeed,

time to take off the rose colored glassed and take a sip of your 4 dollar mocha latte....

it wasn't better, the news cycles were just slower

  4. Late night House of Pies or One's A Meal runs should make at least honorable mention.

Though I would not put them in the 'cool' category, the 1980 Heat Wave and the also 1980 Hurricane Allen evacuation were certainly memorable. Of course, the Allen evacuation was far eclipsed by Hurricane Rita, which set a standard for evacuation misery that will likely never be topped.

Marini's Empanade House, the original Harlow's (pre Landry's), Spud-u-Like..they sold a baked potato the size of a damned football!

I know it says ten, but the late 70's and early 80's were kinda hazy for me....I vaguely remember all the clubs switching from disco or fern bars to pseudo cowboy joints....and I think I had a motorcycle then .....

  5. I have lived on Willowbend almost exclusively since 1974. Willow Meadows, Willowbend, and Post Oak Manor are great neighborhoods. There are lots of us (grew up here, living in the ancestral home, or moved back into the old neighborhood) here. Drive by Willow Park on Cliffwood on a nice afternoon and see all the kids. What you get here is a good value in a home and location that CANNOT BE BEAT!

In fact, welcome to the neighborhood!

  6. Tonight, I just got reminded why I usually take the trek to the Wal-Mart in Pearland when I need something from them. I went to Meyer Park tonight, and words cannot express my utter disbelief. I'd just left the Super Target on S.Main and wanted to check on something there. Target is just a whole different type of world compared to Wal-Mart, especially that one in particular. I grew up in the "hood", but that Meyer Park Wal-Mart is too "hood" for me.

I live close to Meyer Park as well, and I have general rule, if I can get in and out of that Wal Mart by 10 AM it is cool, after that, drive to Pearland

  7. Thanks for getting the date on that, I didn't want to bother looking it up.

All of the people involved in covering that event that morning knew there was a possibility that he would jump or fall. Everyone was ready for it, and when he did all of the TV stations paned away or pulled out so the event would not be seen. The only exceptions, if I recall correctly, were Fox and Telemundo. In those cases, I believe the photographers in the helicopters assumed that someone back in the control room would cut away from the feed. Strictly speaking, the photographers did their jobs -- following the moving object, and it was up to the directors and producers back in the station to make the call about when to cut away. Of course, the guy's stunt went on long enough that by the time he ended it most of the stations' news directors and assistant news directors were in house and running things, but I wouldn't be surprised if the photographers didn't get some unwarranted heat for it.

It's like when the pick-up truck in the high speed chase over the ship channel bridge hit the wall and the guy bounced out of the cab and cheese-gratered through the chain-link fence. The photographers just followed the action, and it aired live because that's one of the hazards of live television.

Back on topic -- it's very easy for people who have no idea how the media works to come up with conspiracy theories about everything. Why bother actually thinking when you can "blame the media?"

what exactly is "the media" code for? I think I know what "Hollywood liberals" is code for, but I am fuzzy about who exactly "the media" is

  8. agreed, pathetic behaviour, worse than grafitti. The fountain is awesome and anyone who messes it up should be arrested.

    BLAME it on the following:

    illegal aliens

    Barak Obama

    Nancy Pelosi

    and all liberals

thank god Rush is here to lead us out of the wilderness

sorry, I thought I was writing a comment on the Chronicle's website

I really think these evil doers should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, then summarily and publicly executed

    that would solve everything

    in my humble opinion

  9. I truly feel compelled to make note on "Distributive Education Careers of America", did I get that right? or D.E.C.A. as it was known. I was in it for 2 years circa 1978-1979 we would go to an annual competition or banquet and sometimes compete with other high schools so Westbury must have been one of them?

Here is some real trivia, does anyone recall ever going to a DECA meet at the then brand new Westwood Mall? around 1978-79? Oh my God, I have many pics of our group 11th & 12th graders in blue blazers and the girls had blue plaid skirts. My mom actually made some of the guys blazers for us.

I also have the very large and wide photo of that annual banquet where all the schools DE classes attended in the Astrodome banquet hall??? I cant even remember but its engraved on the bottom right and I had some pals sign the back. We were all seated at the large table up front by the speakers.

Wow I should have created a topic just about DE - Distributive Education. Still have my buttons and pins that have DECA. I worked at Gulfgate Mall while going to 12th grade. This was a real flash back!

    DECALogoHi.jpg

I was in DE at Madison in the late 70's too...it's a small world after all

I was that idiot who got kicked out of DE for quitting too many jobs....they were really nice folks as I recall...I probably should have taken them more seriously
