  1. When I worked in Greenway Plaza back in 1980 there was a model of the complex in the 'Underground' which depicted a multi story parking garage to be built across 59 which would accomodate propeller driven aircraft. Another case of common sense not allowing something to be constructed I guess?

  2. I never was at the ice house but I do remember people that worked in Pasadena mentioning the place, most were all refinery workers and welders, it was a daily ritual for a lot of those guys to stop off after work.

There were two ice houses on Hwy 225 and Battleground Rd (now Independence). On the East side of that intersection was the Breezeway, on the West side was G's Ice House (think Sherwood Cryer of Gilley's fame). Additionally, at the entrance to the San Jacinto Monument on Battleground you have Beesaws which is the only one of the three still open.

  3. I lived at Pecan Plantation I guess it was off of Rampart / Gulfton back in the 70's. Had it's own club and bar by one of the pools with live bands on weekends. Lot's of single ladies and guys. Glad I survived that era of my life.

  4. The small diameter hole at the 09:00 position makes the medallion remind me of the old tokens we were given as kids when we went to a public swimming pool that allowed you to put your street clothes and towel in a check basket which was kept in a secure area by the swimming pool staff? The token had a safety pin through the hole which allowed us to pin it to our swim suits.

Last one of those I saw was over at the old Stude Park Pool off Studemont back in the early 70's.

  5. Actually there is still a Christie's at that location. I guess what I'm asking is.....is that the same location as in this old picture? If so, it's an interesting look at what Westheimer looked like.

When i moved to Houston back in '68, I seem to remember a Christie's somewhere along South Main around the Holcumbe (sp?) area?

  6. Interesting. It looks kind of desolate in the photos.

Very desolate out there which was probably one of the reasons to take the cash machines out of the toll plaza (too easy to hijack), plus they can now can go after the toll runners and collect the $1 fee plus $17 service fee. Win Win for the Toll Road Authority.....

  7. Thanks so much for the post and link. Every afternoon on my commute home i pass by the old electric car right of way adjacent to 45 South and Beltway 8. Keep thinking it would be nice if someday more information surfaced to fuel my imagination.... Thanks again...

  8. I had originally subscribed to the Chronicle back in the 70's because it was an afternoon paper. As my work schedule has always had me out of the house around 5 a.m. i did not have time for a morning paper (The Post) and was furious when the Chronicle's business group decided they had a captive audience and could publish as they chose.

At least they had the good sense to hire Leon Hale.........

  9. Thanks News, but decided to roll the scooter out of the garage and take advantage of this warm spring day and a Friday off. The building was apparently the Booth Public School, built in 1912. The general style of the building was what was giving me the impression it might have been a chapel or mission. Anyway, I stand corrected. A Google search did not turn up any additional information, nor the Texas Historical Portal. If anyone has additional information, post it up.

    Regards,
