  1. Check out Willowbend. I have some friends that just bought in that area and it's really quite nice. I didn't ask the purchase price. Meanwhile, if you decide to rent, I'd check out the Museum District/Montrose area. That's really close to Rice U. I totally do not agree with the comment about not being able to walk "anywhere inside the loop" at midnight. Here's one in Willow Bend ($139.900.). http://search.har.com/engine/dispSearch.cf...mp;backButton=Y
  2. It seems to have been a trend for homes built in the late 1800's to be demolished in the 1920's. It may have been because the older homes were not equipped with more modern conveniences. Here's a cool link of some of the grand homes that used to be downtown. I wish more would have been saved or moved (some were). http://www.houstonhistory.com/poduct2/album3/jsalbum.html I'm always facinated by the architecture and grandness of homes like these.
  3. The Washington National Cathedral is an excellent example of traditional European, Gothic architecture. However, it took 83 years to build! Our cathedral is designed as so because that's what the church wanted. See quotes below. "There's a kind of peacefulness and serenity about it in the inside that I hope will be conducive for people, for their worship and to again bring them closer to God," he said. Archbishop Joseph Fiorenza helped in the planning of the co-cathedral and decided to keep everything simple. "These clean, simple, noble lines help accomplish that," he said. "It brings the attention of the worshiper immediately to the center spot."
  4. Maybe the employees of their Westheimer/Dunlavy story might know of a status.
  5. Their website says 1111 Main St. Coming Winter 07/08, whatever that means.
  6. I see backhoes and other equipment racing in and out of there in the morning, but I'm not sure where they're going or where they came from. They are coming from the east on Elgin.
  7. It looks like this center will be located in the Mayor's first of 10 proposed wireless internet bubbles. He wants to provide this service to low-income areas. However, I can't see the need to surf the net while shopping at the $.99 Store.
  8. The south facade of the Phoenix is nearly complete. The striped configuration of the glass is a huge improvement, IMO. I wonder what people inside do when they come and pop out your window. I'm not sure if that building is floor-to-ceiling glass, but that would be kind of freaky.
  9. The way I read the article on Swamplot today is that there will be three structures. There will be two towers and a separate building to be used as the sales office and later converted to retail and a spa.
  10. Yeah, I get the Bellaire Examiner thrown on my lawn weekly. It seems like they've been "studying" this for 20 years.
  11. I've always heard this particular area referred to as the Bellaire Barrio. At any rate, new development in this area is good. Maybe this will help get COB off their hinys and get moving on the revitilazation of DT Bellaire.
  12. This sounded familiar to me as well. I thought it was one of the three Grayco projects, but it's not. This is located behind where the old Shamrock Hotel used to be in the neighborhood called "Old Braeswood". I go by there all the time and hadn't even noticed any activity over there. Then again, there's so much going on in the TMC that it could be easily overlooked.
  13. 5800 Bellaire is NOT inside the loop. Boring yes, but probably better than a rundown old apt. complex.
  14. I just spoke to my friend and the pool at "Prudential Main" was at ground level. It must have been the late 80's when they filled it in though because we met in '86. I've never thought it was very purdy either.
  15. I just remember that MD Anderson's Doctor's Club used to be in that building and a Doctor I know used to take his kids there to swim (a long time ago). Maybe it is/was inside.
  16. I recall someone telling me that there is/was a swimming pool on top of the 8 story section of the Prudential. Does anyone have knowledge of this?
  17. No for-profit hospitals are allowed on the TMC campus. That's why Texas Orthopedic Hospital (HCA) is at Greenbriar and S. Main and Park Plaza (Tenet) is near the Museum of Natural Science. Hotels, etc. that support TMC are allowed.
  18. There will be a 12 story parking garage with greenspace on top. 70 apartments will be furnished. This is my first new topic, so I hope I did it right and didn't create a duplicate. Swamplot is currently running an article.
  19. Well, if I had a Christmas party downtown, I'd consider the La Quinta for a few hours of drunken rest. Some of my Canadian co-workers attempted to get a room at the Magnolia last week and the rate was $300/night. They may not have made reservations in advance, etc. They (2-girls) ended up staying in the Galleria which they loved. Bottom line is that it will put more beds downtown and that's what we need.
  20. I'm in the Market Square & Theater district. Even though Calpine has tunnel access, I use the street level unless its freezing or pouring. And, hell, if I worked right by that park, I'd be out there every day. It's awesome! Good point about the Class A issue.
  21. Actually, the Fiesta down near Reliant is really a good one and there's a nice Kroger and Super Target near Main and Kirby. All of these are not really that far either.
  22. Another note High Street is where Central Ford used to be, so the description in the title is incorrect. There an article on Swamplot right now. The address for this development is 4100 Westheimer. I've not found the location of Highland Tower yet other than it will be between Highland Village and Target on San Felipe.
