  1. With all due respect, the Latino community includes those that have been here for 10's of generations, dating back to Spanish land grants in fact. Thus, its culture is just as integral as any other immigrant group. You could even say there is a relatively new hybrid called "TexMex" or "Tejano", which blends the deep Spanish - and later Mexican - history of this area with the other Texas and American institutions that came later. In short, being American or Texan is nothing more than the summations of many different histories and cultures. The very word
  2. Ok. I just looked at the picture there. This MAY work. Come to think about it, Disneyland and Disneyworld also use the small town feel, yet they dont instantiate fiddles at every corner either. So as long as it looks MODERN, then, maybe. The picture looks pretty cool. Small town, like disney, is ok, just as long as it is not country. ...But then again, I can't think of anyway that a Nashville-based organization isnt going to go country on us. They may very well turn up the country theme to the maximum level, because they see this as Texas and not Houston. Were screwed...
  3. What ever happened to that futuristic space themed thing? Although not perfect, I liked that a heck of a lot better than this small-town themed, Texas courthouse/town center crap. The space theme is very much Houston. Is modern and futuristic, a characteristic of Houston itself. Nothing against Nashville, but the fact that Nashville is involved just conjures up fiddles in my brain. And what the hell is Gaylord Texan? It all just sounds wrong.
  4. This is all great and wholesome. But the real important thing here is that - I just saved a lot on my car insurance by switching to Geico.
  5. I remember that: I guess it was about 2 or 3 years ago that we had some thread here about a french cafe being planned. I even walked in the store several times just to talk to the clerks..and they too thought that the cafe was a "go". Well, as MLS1202 said, it never happend. But, if Pavillions happens, and it brings the amount of people that it hopefully will, then maybe the store will attempt a cafe again. I would love to see that building come back to life. MLS1202, are you still out of the country?
  6. Yea! If I'm not mistaken, that KHOU article shows a rendering...that looks "old", with dark red brick, and has those killer old-fasion arches I was talking about earlier in this thread. Me Happy!
  7. Just came back from downtown (yea, a had a couple) Anyways, as I was leaving La Carafe, taking my favorite back-street exit-strategy outa' downtown (Travis, under UHD, behind godfathers bail bonds and underneath I-10 elevated), I noticed the 2 huge cranes on the other side of the I-10 bridge. They look like some serious cranes for some serious gourmet structures. I guess that is the UHD expansion. It's looking good. I cant wait for all this to tie into the Hardy Yard project and the eventual Houston multi-modal transit terminal. This is whole area is a diamond in the rough to become a cool extension to downtown.
  8. That color rendition, which I take is looking Southwest, shows the Hilton towards the east. But there also is a parking garage, right across the pavilions, on the next block on main. Is that garage allready there? Or is it to be built? I thought the whole pavilions takes up 3 blocks in a row east of main. The rendition also shows some pretty tall towers in the background, somewhere in the vicinity of St. Josephs but across the pierce elevated. I'm pretty sure those towers dont exist. Also, those white towers right behind the pavilions...I dont remember those. I thought the only thing of that magnitude in that area is Houston House Apatments. Maybe my bearings are all wrong here.
  9. To bad the city of houston page has no renderings. I dont know why, but I would love to see brick arches around the engine bay entrances, rather than simple rectangular openings. They have that old feel, I guess.
  10. wha...? It seems to me that everytime I go downtown on fridays or especially saturday nights, main street around preston station is crawling with people. The partying drunk ones. Every weekend. The blocking off of that area seems to work nicely there.
  11. Ahhh, UT-Pan AM. That brings back old memories. It will always be simply "Pan Am" to me (pre-UT-assimilation). I was raised in McAllen till about 20 years ago, when I moved to Houston. Pan Am was basically the only univeristy south of Corpus/Kingsville, and for the most part, still is. By the way, March 2, 2006, is the exact 20 year aniversary of me moving to Houston...I will have spent half of my life here on that date. I Still havent lost the excitement of living in this great city. I think come March 2nd I will celebrate the event!!
  12. Anyone know what the combined student populations are for the 3 UH system campuses? (Houston only, not including Victoria)
  13. The fact that Houston's population is 2.1 million, and that its metro population is 5.5 million, should mean that this project is going to succeed, as along as it doesnt suck. Ther entire Houston city and Houston area feeds the districts such as downtown and uptown. And we got plenty of millions to fuel this project. I think downtown is going to have its second major explosion of revitalization just by this one project. I cant wait. The only thing that worries me is that there will be a significan negative impact to Bayou Place. I hate to see BP deteriorate. But then again, it allready has been out-shined by main street/market square. Who knows, maybe having Pavillions will bring in so many people, that some will wonder over to PB and make that place start happening again.
  14. Yea. The phrase "soil samples" equates with "Scamrock". Pavillions passes the smell test for real, though. I cant wait...
  15. I don't know about anyone else, but I feel like Houston just got kicked, spit at, and then robbed - followed by the arrogant display of the plunder for all to see - without the least consideration or regard for the feelings of the victim. I hope the children of Dallas enjoy the loot. Meanwhile, my daughters have repeatedly asked me: “why can’t we go to Astroworld again Daddy?”
  16. Oh, it was A&M. Now it all makes sense. Sorry to all you aggies out there...I couldnt resist!
  17. Man, I hope the higher density of people was taken into account by the civil engineers of those skyscrapers. Lets see, 6 times more people per floor...Thats, mabye 200lbs times 6 equals 1,200lbs per floor, and taking a 50 story building is 60,000lbs more than originally expected... I once heard there was a univeristy...somewhere here in Texas....where they built a new library but forgot to take the weight of the books into account...and the building has been slowly sinking into the ground since!!!
  18. Downtown. Walking to work. Luckyyyyy.
  19. You know what would be cool? An elevated monorail - just for downtown. Nothing big, that's what light-rail and commuter rail is for. But an elevated monorail that maybe goes all the way around downtown: from, say, the city hall area on Louisiana street, southbound to the energy and financial district, then turning eastward towards the (hopefully) Houston pavilions, then the Hilton/Toyota Center before turning north, passing between the parkshops/Houston Center and the GRB, then the ballpark, then turing west on Prairie through the historic district, then back south on Louisiana to the theater district/bayou place, before completing the circle at city hall. It would be a hell of alot more usefull than Seattle's monorail that only serves the 2 endpoints. Ours would tie in many venues together. Just thinking of all the venues this would tie: City Hall/Central Library Financial and Energy District Houston Pavilions Hilton/Toyota Center GRB Convention Center Houston Center/Park Shopps Minute Maid Park Historic District/Market Square/UHD Theater District/Bayou Place ...and maybe making 2 of the stations tie into the tunnels. Seven Stations should do it. I like it. I like it alot.
  20. Now that "they" have done this to Houston, I dont feel quite that bad about Houston taking all thier oil business away from them. It's "go" time.
  21. Sure Astroworld kinda' sucked compared with the likes of Fiesta Texas. But Coney Island sucks royally too...way more sucky than Astroworld. Astroworld was Houston's Coney Island. It was in our souls and needed to stay.
  22. Which begs a basic question: So who cares and why is this important? Seems we would rather have the bulk of the employees' salaries being spent here rather than a few managers at the top tier. Maybe I am missing something here.
