  1. I wanted to love BB's because I've never tried them before and I wanted a good cajun place closer to home. Their fried catfish was wonderful and we tried the appetizer that sounded really disgusting to me (but ended up being terrific). It was the french fries covered in cheese with roast beef and gravy. I would have never tried it if my husband hadn't ordered it but they were really good. The cheese tastes a lot like rotel mixed in but even with a canned product the outcome was good.

I finally tried the gumbo because that makes or breaks it for me. I have to pass on the gumbo. The veggie chunks in it are just not right. Gumbo should have all that stuff in it but it should be cooked down and you shouldn't be eating chunks of it in the gumbo--the only chunks should be the seafood, chicken or sausage. I'll have to keep with the Mardi Gras as the only place in Houston that sells gumbo the way my mom makes it (ordered with an extra cup of rice of course). My whole family is from Louisiana and Mardi Gras is the only place that I've found that makes a gumbo with roux the way I've always eaten gumbo. Too many places make their gumbo in a creole style that I don't care for.

I'm not crazy about Mardi Gras for any of their other food but their gumbo is the tops. If anyone has a suggestion for a better place for gumbo I'd love to try it out.

There is too much variation in the way people make gumbo, so I never order it at a restaurant. We make our own because that's how we like it, and I get things that I know others do better than me when we eat out.

  2. So I have not been paying attention to this thread at all and the last two pages are basically nothing....has this thing broken ground yet?

This thread is not about construction or development. It is for whining and philosophical ramblings between groups of people who will never hear what the other says.

  3. Last time I checked I still am in my 20s. I'm 23. And I realize that only young single people who don't think in the long term would care about the entertainment around where they work. What happens when the college grads are in their 30s and have a family? Will they still go out to a Rockets game after work? No. More than likely, given the home prices inside the loop, they'll move to the suburbs (if they haven't already). And they certainly wouldn't want to be bothered with the traffic trying to get home. Only the short-sighted ones would pick the downtown entertainment over the suburban practicality, and if I were an employer, I'd prefer to hire the people who are able to think that far ahead.

Yes clearly Exxon isn't going to base all its decisions on 20-somethings. But the original post you replied to was about young engineers considering an offer between Hess and Exxon. I'm sorry you don't like to do fun things while you're still young, most of us did. Some still do. There is nothing fun to do in Spring.

  4. Seeing as traffic is an absolute nightmare for downtown, I'd go with the suburban campus myself. Interesting city life isn't something people consider for their jobs. Nobody is going to put in 8 hours at work, then spontaneously think "you know, I'd like to see a basketball game." If I lived near a suburban campus and worked there, I'd have a short commute, and could still go downtown on weekends and holidays if I so desired.

How long ago were you in your 20s? Proximity to fun stuff is definitely something people consider with jobs coming out of college. I lived in midtown when I moved here 10 years ago, and took the free Astros shuttle to games after work all the time. We walked downtown to bars. Now it's not so much of a big deal, but the point was about kids out of college making the choice, not me with 2 kids.

  5. How long until one of the residents of the $400,000 lofts complains about the grilled burger smell from Someburger and they have to close? Don't mess with my Someburger!

Why would anyone complain about the sweet smell of ground beef? Anyway, they griddle, not grill, so it doesn't smell quite as much or as good.

  6. 2 things suck about Reliant, everything else is great.

    1) Concerts suck there. Acoustics blow, and you will be so far from the band you can't see jack.

    2) The immediate surroundings. It's a really depressing setting. Sure, the blimp can get an angle where you can see downtown or the med center, but with the flatness you could do that from anywhere within 15 miles. They should have put the thing somewhere else and just let the Astrodome rot it its own grossness.

  7. I'm currently working on a project to create a comprehensive map of the Dallas Pedestrian Network. The network in the past has been neglected and wayfinding is terrible, so I'm hoping this project will help improve connections and visibility of the system.

    http://www.kickstart...strian-network?

Houston's system seems to have a much better wayfinding system and naming system, but are the tunnel entrances from the streets clearly marked? In the near future there will be plans to update or repurpose the system of corridors that run through downtown Dallas. Many people want to see them abandoned, but I believe the real problem is connectivity between ground level and the pedestrian network.

What are you thoughts on pedestrian networks in an urban setting?

In cities with extreme seasons either direction, I think they are fantastic. Being able to stay inside and grab a bite to eat in Houston in July is great, and doing the same in Calgary in January is pretty cool. Theirs is above ground, but it's the same thing. Many buildings are connected at the 2nd or 3rd floor by pedestrian walkways, there are places to eat in many buildings at that level as well.

  8. We eat out as a family once a week, the rest is all home cooking. It's too expensive and bad for you to do it any more than that.

There is way more good stuff to eat inside the loop than in the burbs. I hate my business trips to Plano, it's all chain BS full of Lexus SUV driving a-holes. The thread title is definitely out of date, but we just kept it going as new things got added to the neighborhood.

I wish Hubcap would update their website and put something about the new location, like hours. I'm sure I could dig for that in some article on the internet from 9 months ago, but right now I don't feel like it.

  9. There is the east end, not as close or posh as in dt, but it is the cheapest way to get in cycling distance of downtown.

I'm in cycling distance now, thanks to completion of the Nicholson trail. I'm saying it would be fun to fall out of my room into discovery green. If I'm gonna wish a couple more digits onto my income, I want to do it right.

  10. Not quite a year later, we were back at the water fountain area, and it's still great. The lemonade stands were out, there was hula hoop class, tons of stuff to do. I really wish some rich bored person would get me a place in One Park Place so we could be right there when we want to. Downtown rocks on Sunday morning. Free parking, no traffic, and still plenty to do.

  11. But Red! Whatever will you do when Wal-Mart undercuts Urban Soles and Penzey's Spices, and when the McDonald's inside drives Berryhill Baja Grill into the ground? What then!?

What say you of the price of convenience?

Don't forget about the Wal-Mart shopping carts that will soon displace the Kroger, Home Depot, and Fiesta ones at the bus stops! No one is safe! They are going to take over everything!

  12. Even in years past when it has seemed the team would be bad, people have shown up pretty well for the first few series. I was at opening day and went again today, and there isn't any crowd to speak of. Opening day attendance says 41,042 but there is no way it was that full. Today was nice, I rolled up with the 1 year old halfway through the game and sat down near home plate in the shade. I kind of like that no one is there, it makes it easier to move around and a 5 seat buffer is key when the 1 year old wants to climb and explore. Also, it doesn't get too loud and scare him.

So, with the team obviously for sale, is this a lost year? Or are some of the unknown players in the lineup young guns who will mature into the next solid players? If you look at it they aren't even that young, just unknown. Bourgeous is 29, Downs 27, Sanchez 28. Some people seem to love Pence, but something about the way he plays he just looks awkward. He throws like a 7 year old whose dad never taught him the right way. He runs weird too.

  13. Here is a great example of my point. This post will get a free pass because it takes a swing at the people in the Heights who are against the Walmart. But, there is absolutely no evidence of a single upscale restaurant even being interested in this development. Do I now get to call this person a liar? No. Of course not. It is just speculation. We all do this, but I am not allowed to because I do not fit in with the little club of pro-walmart/anti-preservation people. In fact, I initially posted what was simply a wise crack about the walmart having a fast food restaurant and everyone has picked that to pieces. Why? Not because they care about whether it is actually true whether the Walmart will have a fast food restaurant. It is because they want to shout down anyone who opposes the Walmart, just the same way anyone who opposes the preservation ordinance gets shouted down in that thread.

Free pass for what? I know you aren't attacking me, I'm just trying to decipher the point. I wasn't in any way claiming that a PF Chang would get built, I just used that instead of writing <random chain 1 notch above fast food>. I like some crappy chain food - all of us do, some are just too good to admit it publicly. So if they put in a Wings n Things, yes, that would be neighborhood outrage and travesty to some. But I don't care, I think their wings are awesome so I'll go there instead of the depressing one on 290/Antoine.

  14. Hold on, did anyone hold the illusion that a chef-driven restaurant would be IN the Wal-Mart? Please. Anyway, it's gonna be trendy chains that fill the rest of it up anyway. That's what you (most) people want anyway. It's why Berryhill is the most happening restaurant in the hood already. Everyone just take off your uppity hats and admit you'll be eating at the PF Chang when it opens.

  15. I would rather them drop the crappy pretzels and keep (non-alcoholic) drinks free for now. I'm gold elite so I don't know about extra charges for exit row seats. I have gotten whatever I want so far.
