  1. What's next should be nothing. All that's left out there is retreads in free agency. Anything else will come in a trade with a steep price tag. We made it to the World Series with the team we have right now minus Clemens. If anything, we need to be worried about starting pitching again, not trying to get a hitter. We have a number of guys right on the cusp of stardom. Why trade Burke, Lamb or Lane when either of the three could be the one that has their breakout year?
  2. Bagwell restructured his contract years ago to help the team. It's not his fault the 'Stros backloaded his salary so that he was making journeyman money during his star years and windfall during his decline. Now you are saying he should just give up 17 million to help the team? Would you? I know it's a "what have you done for me lately" society, but Bagwell deserves every penny he is guaranteed this upcoming year whether he can help the team or not.
  3. Let's not write off Bags until he has a full chance. He has more than paid his dues for that chance. Heck, if he can come back 80%, that's still 20 homers and 80 or so ribbies. Funny, you don't have that guarentee with Nomah either and it seems everyone is jumping on that bandwagon and writing off Bags in the same sentence.
  4. On a related note, if you look closely at the replay of Kris Brown about to run on the field to kick the field goal when time ran out, you'll see a man in a dark overcoat and sunglasses grab him by the arm and whisper something to him. Did anyone else see that?
  5. Speaking of the Babin trade, Tennessee used the four draft picks on the following: Ben Troupe - TE - backup TE, but so far has 33 catches this year for 329 yards Randy Starks - DT - Starting LDT for the Titans with 27 tackles and 1.5 sacks Bo Schoebel - DE - #2 on the depth chart, gets into most games Jacob Bell - OG - #2 on the depth chart, but does get into most games Of course there's no telling if Houston would have picked any of these guys, but you have to wonder if any of these guys could have helped plug the current holes we have going into next year.
  6. The Texans have spent 4 years drafting "needs". When all you do is draft needs, you get into too many situations where you take someone higher than he should have gone and leave a better player on the board. I'll concede that they shouldn't go wrong if they do draft Ferguson, but if they don't draft Ferguson there's a good chance he'll slip to #4, which again means he's just the best OL in the draft, not the best player overall. Giving up 2 draft picks in a trade for Buchannon (2nd and 3rd rounders), and giving Tennessee their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th round picks just to move up because they desperately wanted Jason Babin are perfect examples of the Texans trying to plug holes instead of drafting the best players when it's their turn. That's 5 draft picks gone for two "needs" currently sitting on the bench.
  7. Hizzy, I think you're missing a DL in there. If it's a given that Capers is gone, then it's a given that the 3-4 defense is gone as well. We will have to address that somewhere.
  8. Conventional wisdom states that when you have the #1 pick, you pick a franchise QB if you need one, otherwise you take the best player in the draft. For the Texans, that means Bush, end of story. In addition to that, if Bush lives up to the hype, no GM in his right mind will want to look back and say he took a Left Tackle over Bush 5 years from now no matter how good that LT turns out to be. Luckily for the Texans, this year's draft is full of capable Linemen, that will make the decision to draft Bush a little easier knowing the issues they have with the OL right now. If we draft a LT, we plug one hole, if we draft Bush we actually plug a number of holes. Bush will create more problems for a defense than any LT can; you put Bush in the backfield and at least one linebacker has to shadow him no matter what. That alone gives Carr an extra second or two on every pass play. And to those who say you should only have one good back, there will be plenty of opportunities to have both Bush and Davis lined up at the same time. Passing in a two back set with Davis blocking and Bush as an escape valve also frees up Andre Johnson a little, so Davis also becomes the defacto second receiver we've been needing without blowing a high pick on a receiver. Oh, and no disrespect semipro, but your list is circa April 05, before Bush had his breakout year this year. You won't find a single current draft prediction list that has Bush rated lower than D'Angelo Williams.
  9. I tend to appreciate shots from North and East of Downtown. It's let's you know that there is a little history to Houston and that it has more to it than 12 or so late-20th centure glass structures.
  10. I don't know what the Chicago papers are thinking, because it's brand recognition that separates the top revenue clubs from the rest. Brand recognition sells merchandise. You can only make so much from ticket sales, the rest has to come from somewhere else, and that's hats and tshirts. The three top clubs in revenue and total value are the Yanks, Red Sox and the Cubs in that order, none of which has the brand-new corporate-named stadium with suites that all the other clubs say they need to keep up. They are the top revenue teams because people all over the country wear their ballcaps. Before this year, you would be hard pressed to find someone with no connection to Houston wearing an Astros cap, but there are millions of people who have never set foot in NYC wearing Yankees gear. The only way to get brand recognition is to be the Yanks-BoSox-Cubs, or play in the World Series.
  11. Still, I don't see it. NFL head coaches need to be 100% commited and dedicated to the task. I can't see Jimmy Johnson as either. Now, just as far-fetched a scenario but IMHO more believable would be for Bud Adams to fire Jeff Fisher at the end of the season leaving the Texans open to hiring him.
  12. As nostalgic of a choice it would be, the fact is Jimmy Johnson got off the NFL train 7 years ago. That's a long time in a sport that is constantly reinventing itself. I highly doubt he is ready for the learning curve just to get updated on what's happening and the constant 18hr days of an NFL coach.
  13. I think the Paul Wall song is better. You can hear them both here: Tunes put some hip-hop into Astros' pennant
  14. Lankford Cafe in midtown. Try the cheese enchiladas or the cheeseburger. Both might be the best greasiest cheesiest meals you've ever had for the price.
  15. I'm so glad you can't imagine that. But, are you saying it would be OK to demo a John F. Staub for a perry-inspired mcmansion?????? GoAtomic, have you seen this beauty? : 3602 E PARKWOOD DR
  16. Ah, yes, Riverside Terrace. Here is exhibit #1. A John F. Staub Georgian Revival for sale: Staub House for sale If I had the money, I would take this gem of a house any day of the week.
  17. Eelimon, I don't think that is true. While nobody will dispute WestU's Tony status now, when it was first built it wasn't always that way. Back in the day it was an area of upper-middle class homes, not really a direct comparison th River Oaks. The Jewish River Oaks you are referring to borders braes bayou west of 288 behind UH. I can't remember the proper name of the area, but there are some beautiful stately mansions tucked away back there.
  18. Nah, no "super shelter" there. NW mall just got a new landlord, I am pretty sure they bought it to make money, it's too early to believe they are already thinking of cutting their losses on the property. My crystal ball says Walmart gonna move in to the old JC Penny to counter some of the moves Target has made recently with their move to Memorial City Mall and new store off Taylor/I10.....
  19. I'm a fan of the Chron blogs, and blogs in general. I would actually rather get unfiltered information knowing it may or may not be partisan, may or may not be biased, and may or may not be factually checked by editors. To me, it actually takes the ambiguity out of the equation (on both sides of the political fence) rather than adds to it. It would seem that the conservatives would be onboard with aspect that as well. Back to the blogs, I get the most out of blogs that do a heavy amount of linking. The sciguy blog's coverage of Hurricane Rita is a perfect example. He linked to a number of other blogs and stories that gave a good, unfiltered picture of what was going on weather-wise by people more interested in advancing weather knowledge than dog tricks.
  20. Kimberly, thanks for linking the article. Anyone out there want to continue saying this is all the County's fault??
  21. I think blaming County Officials is short-sighted. As has been previously stated, Six Flags gave up on Astroworld years ago. The parking situation and expensive real estate are convenient excuses to give to the public. I think Six Flags decided to close Astroworld and found reasons for the decision, not the other way around.
  22. *sigh*, does this mean we won't be seeing that dancing old man mascot on TV anymore??
  23. My favorite memory was riding in the back car of the Cyclone before all the safety measures went into place. Anyone else remember when the only thing that held you in place was the bar in your lap?
  24. Who wants to make a bet that Tilman buys the cyclone and puts it on the Kemah Boardwalk?
  25. Saigon, I'm truly sorry you had to "waitress" for the needy, but, unfortunately, not every gets to hold the walkie-talkie when volunteering. I know for a fact that I have the management skills to run the entire relief operation at the GRB, but I go and sort clothes and take orders from someone with a walkie-talkie, because that's what's needed.
