  1. Well, i heard that there were issues, but they obviously got them figured out.
  2. Liberty Kitchen, if the name stays .... Were they able to work around the issues with serving alcohol near the school? I thought i heard something about the building being grandfathered in since it was there before the school, but i'm not sure.
  3. My first experience at a W was in Times Square, and it was partay central over there. But then i stayed at the location in the French Quarter and my room was in a converted carriage house (which explained the odd shape of the room). It was still modern, but of a different sort than the Dallas or Times Square locations. One of the reasons, i think, that the W is among my favorite hotel chains...
  4. It could be a W ... the NY Union Square and French Quarter locations are both renovated historic buildings. (I'm just assuming that your reservations are based on its more common image of being a more sleek and modern hotel chain)
  5. Red, can you post this to the board? I don't seem to have received one.
  6. I don't know about any CAMH drama, but yes, that's about where the MFAH expansion is planned. Also, there are plans (and i do mean plans and nothing more at this time) to expand where Glassell currently has its parking lot.
  7. I just feel the need to link this after s3mh's comment. http://www.southparkstudios.com/clips/151029/you-hate-children
  8. Could we have a HAIF / Swamplot crossover and this can be the comment of the day?
  9. No one said anything about not being able to freely express yourself on this board. However, it is considered a common courtesy to those who start threads to stay on topic instead of rudely hijacking them, especially with unrelated, touchy subjects. On another note, doesn't this particular subject regarding a lack of restaurant diversity in the Heights seem rather quaint now?
  10. There's probably a 90 day "cool off" period before they release it.
  11. Revival has already established itself by supplying a number of well regarded restaurants and, to a lesser extent, to the public at the Eastside Farmer's Market. This seems to me to be a natural progression in expanding their business to the public. To Kylejack's point, i think they have a much better chance if they remain focused on the meats and having anything else be incidental to that.
  12. That's just wrong -- hinting at some juicy gossip but not dishing it out.
  13. The coming soon sign has been up for well over a year, if not a couple or more. That's why I was reporting on the activity -- not that we are necessarily getting a soul food place but that we might be getting *something* if the work on the place is indicative of anything.
  14. And in other news, something appears to be going on at the building on the corner of White Oak at Oxford with the "soul food coming soon" sign (also known as extra parking for Onion Creek). To the latter point, my understanding is that the owners of the Creek properties do own this place. In the last couple weeks, the place has been tented for pest control, and there is a large dumpster out back for construction-related trash. I don't think that soul food will actually be coming there any time soon, but please post if you know something.
  15. OK, to hell with Wally World coming to the hood.... Here's some exciting news. Courtesy of MyTable: "In the world of locally raised and produced food, today's big news is that chef Ryan Pera has left The Grove to join Morgan Weber of Revival Meats to open Revival Market in the old McCain's Market location at 550 Heights Blvd. The guys will source and sell locally raised meats, prepare charcuterie (including fresh and cured sausages, pate and confits) and make and sell their own condiments. Need a sandwich? Revival Market will feature a deli (breads by Slow Dough Bread Co.), and there will also be ready-to-eat foods for carry-out. Pera says the shop should be open by the end of the year. All we can say is, wish it were in our neighborhood."
  16. It's not protected, but you can actually turn left on to Yale from Washington eastbound. While you may only tend to take it to avoid the trains on Heights, I always take it to avoid the trains since there's sure to be one when i get there
  17. Speaking of the Heights Association, does anyone know if they have an official stance on the new changes?
  18. Hey, maybe they'll force half the bars and restaurants on White Oak to shut down and become gas stations and auto shops again.
  19. A couple things here: 1. A realtor would be happy to sell a renovated $500K bungalow just as soon as a $500K new build. In fact, they would much prefer the former because a neighborhood of renovated homes is much more desirable. Take a look on HAR, and you'll see that nice, restored bungalows don't go for that much less than a newer house in the neighborhood that has twice the square footage. 2. "... destroy what is left of Houston's historic homes...". In context of most of the older homes in the Heights, this is like saying that the homes in Cinco Ranch will be historic 60-70 years from now. I won't go in to differences with build quality or the look/character of the home, but most of the homes in the Heights were built with the same idea in mind -- cheaper, working class single family homes in the 'burbs. And just another observation, I am amazed at how much the Heights has kept its character over the past 10 years despite all these evil, elitist builders/realtors/architects. We're talking about one of the hottest neighborhoods in one of the nation's largest cities and yet in the main Heights area, you are more likely to see a smaller, older home than a McVic. All this without the proposed changes.
  20. Makes sense. All i know is that i just booked a massage at $45/hr and it's about a block and half away. Very dangerous .... sort of like living next to the new WalMart and needing a car battery at 2AM. I mean, what's to stop you from going all the time? (If that doesn't make sense, Angie, feel free to wade through the WalMart thread here. Also, welcome to the Heights and to HAIF)
  21. Nothing wrong with self promotion for a new business! Thanks for the update ... I found the site after i posted my msg, but it didn't have any info.
  22. Does anyone have the scoop for We Heart Massage on White Oak in the old Sew Crafty location? I'm not exactly sure what a massage co-op is, but the thought of walking two blocks to grab a massage sounds a-ok to me, especially if the prices are good.
  23. For something that, as far as I know, isn't a done deal, there's been a lot of activity on the lot recently. Looks like they are doing some clearing and leveling of the land. Not what i would consider "breaking ground", though (as compared to what the new Whole Foods site looks like).
