  1. So any news on what will become of the old Late Nite Pie? Such a prime location. It just sits there as an eye sore when it is the perfect spot for a restaurant, bakery, or a much needed coffeehouse down in this part of Midtown.
  2. I have to agree...that cinder block wall doesn't help the bar and the lack of parking isn't great. I was excited for OTC Midtown. Sounded like they would have some good food in addition to drinks. I didn't see the reference on Facebook as to a grand opening. Passing by with nothing on the marquee and no signs of opening, I thought they may have run out of money before opening up.
  3. What happened to OTC Midtown?? There is now nothing on the marquee after they have redone the outside and most likely inside of the bar. Thought it would be open now. Just curious if anyone knows the status of a grand opening.
  4. BRB - pics from the morning. Looks like they are gutting the inside and I would guess tearing down the building soon. Not sure of the plans for this lot.
  5. Definitely official. I got a "Notice of Application" in the mail from TABC stating that OTC Midtown was getting a permit to sell alcoholic beverages. Owner is Strauss Bier Haus, LLC and the memo also references business partners Andy Aweida and Mohammad Baratizadeh. Hope that they turn out good. I noticed on the Facebook page that they reference "Pizza Grill"...that makes me happier that they potentially have something else to go there for other than drinks. I really enjoyed Dogwood last Thursday, but definitely have to go very early to get a seat and less noise. Beautiful place and inventive food.
  6. So possibly OTC is moving or adding a location there on Bagby where Union Bar is located....
  7. I noticed the marquee today at Union Bar on Bagby stating "OTC Now Hiring". There is a fresh coat of paint and I've seen people working on it this week. The bar started out more upscale and seemed to turn into a dive. Does anyone know anything about what is going on with the revamp? I hope they do something worthwhile since I live so close by and would enjoy a cafe or less rowdy bar!
  8. The best place in this location was back several years ago before Aperture, Coffee Groundz, and Pilgrim's Cleaners. It was called Midtown Bagel. They had excellent food (bagels, pizza, etc) and great coffee in a casual atmosphere. I loved hanging out there and walking over there from what was Jefferson Midtown (Amli, Metro) apartments way back. Coffee Groundz was great when they first opened serving wine and Gelato. I sure hope someone comes in and drastically changes the place. I really want a great coffee house / bagel shop / wine bar within walking distance. They should model it after Brasil over at Westheimer @ Dunlavy.
  9. No doubt about it! I got to go to a private function at Ruby's on Saturday night....the food was definitely enjoyable...they brought by samples of the fajitas....I was shocked at how tender they were!! Maybe some of the best I've had!! I will order those next time! Their chile smashed potatoes were tasty too....good house margarita....above average but not the best ever....worth going to again and definitely my favorite of the three Midtown Mexican restaurants...

  11. I think the opening has been moved up to next, Monday, Oct 12th according to the sign I saw outside the business...I will be there opening night! Our other Mexican restaurants just aren't exactly what I'm looking for...one is too pricey and crowded and the other has bad service and just "ok" food....
  12. Here's a short blurb and sketch regarding the B&B....glad to see this going up...a different aspect adding more class to the Midtown area.... http://swamplot.com/la-maison-in-midtown-the-power-of-a-good-nights-sleep/2009-07-03/
  13. >>>All I see is the construction company's sign on Bagby....they are still going....I heard them out there at 7am this morning! There is a mountain of dirt VERY HIGH out there right now....they seem to be wanting to get whatever it is done ASAP! I live close too and heard the beeping as well....I'll post as soon as I find out something.
  14. I just noticed today that they are digging large, deep holes at the vacant lot, corner of McGowen @ Bagby. They also installed a box for electricity at the vacant lot across the street at McGowen @ Baldwin. Anyone know what's up? These are the lots that belong to Farb Properties from their failed venture to put up a midrise luxury apartment building. Major action still brewing over there even after 6:30pm tonight....
  15. Recent signage on McGowen @ Bagby seems to suggest that Farb is ditching the "Citiplace" idea and selling the properties (3) around this intersection. How about a nice big park!!!??? Unfortnately, the property is too valuable and that idea will surely not go through. I imagine, in the end, we will see townhomes there.
  16. Anyone have the scoop on the new bar across the street from the Car Spa, Smith @ Drew? I think it is called "Community Bar". This is the location of several former restaurants that failed.
  17. I found a little info on "CitiPlace"....looks like Farb has placed a bid for construction. This link details the number of units and square footage. http://www.davisbros.net/citiplace.html
  18. It's called "Saint Dane's" and is an open-air sports bar with some food. Couldn't find much else about it.
  19. I got the scoop.....see this site...it's called Union Bar & Lounge. Looks promising and they did a great job on making it modern and hip... http://www.myspace.com/unionlounge
  20. Anyone know what is the new business going to be at 2708 Bagby (across the street from the closed down Aloha Modelling Studios)? They have been working on the building and grounds for weeks (daily including Sundays) but there is no signage as to what this business is going to be when finished. What a strange way to promote a future business establishment! Hope it's not a revamped Aloha Modelling Studio!!
  21. There seems to be some action in the past week. A large ground billboard, painted black now, has gone up. I imagine they will advertise the new mid rise if that is still happening. Today, they've been putting up a fence around the two parcels of land next to each other. Anybody have any new information on whether the mid rise is still the plan for this property?
  22. Love their panninis (sp?) and great to finally have a centrally located coffeehouse in Midtown. Nice touch adding the gelato selections too! I went by the Starbucks in Midtown today (only because I have a gift card) and thought they were much less courteous. No atmosphere at Starbucks either as compared to Coffee Groundz. My only complaint with Coffee Groundz is the fact that they have a minimum of $ 20 for gift cards as opposed to Starbucks which I believe could have a $ 5 minimum? Would love to see Coffee Groundz have more events. I know they have wine tastings occassionally (has anyone been?), but how about live music? Love the 80's satellite radio they have had on in the mornings during recent weekday visits!
  23. Anyone know anything about this development? Is it going through? Thanks!
  24. I can't help but notice that since January 2006, when Farb bought three areas of land (McGowen @ Bagby (and on Bagby across the street) + McGowen @ Baldwin) there has been no development of what was supposed to be a midrise to be built starting in Spring 2006. Quite a long time to own expensive property without development (after purchasing it with a predetermined plan). Yes, the City of Houston building and parking lot were torn down (probably for tax reasons) making it less expensive to hold undeveloped property. And one of the lots is a disgusting "swamp".....neighbors are constantly calling to have the weeds cut down below "skyscraper height" ......not to mention a bird that looks like a crane that was hanging out in that "swamp" with the rats....true! Now they have had a guard outside the property for about 4 days while a communications shed is further disassembled...must be some expensive equipment in there running the cell phone tower on the lot! They put up new fencing and barbed wire around that shed today... Anyone heard anything new regarding what has happened to the development of these properties and the supposed midrise? Did it fall through?
