  1. Is it my imagination, or are there tower crane sections in that one photo?

A neighbor showed up and said they tried to buy the little property behind this filled with junk, it belongs to Mrs Boone and she wouldn't sell it. He said she wants to build a bicycle museum there.

Now that's the kind of Montrose I'm used to!

Towers in Uptown aren't really "surrounded" by each other - setbacks are enormous and there are, of course, the many strip malls. It's getting somewhat denser but I'd say each tower still largely stands alone.

And Montrose Boulevard, just between Westheimer and 59, already has, what, 4 towers?

I would love to see stuff like this downtown, but Montrose Boulevard is in a weird in-between state right now and would really benefit from density. I don't think I actually want it to become a corridor of towers, but this is Houston. Nothing ever becomes all one thing anyway. A mix of eclectic retail and midrise apartments regularly pierced by a tower? Sounds perfect to me.

Weird but not weird. Downtown Dallas jumped the Woodall Rogers to merge with Uptown. But Montrose was always supposed to be a funky bohemian enclave, so that's been lost.

Not everyone forgetting how the "Under the Tuscan Sun" design plagued our communities. 1200 Post Oak, Uptown Park, Granduca, Montebello, The Dominion, Villa D'Este, The Mercer, The 610 Sheraton (to an extent), and of course, the Ventana.

At least Houston didn't end up with orange buildings, as happened in Irving, Texas, a few years back...

And, knowing Tilman to be the competitive guy he is, hopefully he'd do something for the Toyota Center, with the caveat that he doesn't own any of the surrounding land, of course.

First thing is make the Rockets competitive again. Second is bring in that NHL franchise.

This gotta be the least Houston photo. Public transit and dense development?

So then why do all the Houston rap stars include Metro in all their videos of downtown?

Such an amazing and beautiful addition to Downtown !  Thank you Hines Corp.  Have I also mentioned lately how much we really need a couple more SUPER tall skyscrapers again in Downtown Houston ?  Just thought I'd add that in there.

Have a great and beautiful weekend everyone !

All we need is a couple of high-profile tenants in those high-rises and we'll be set...

The latter thing is Colony Ridge. It was fairly controversial. The guy who bought all the land and built it is a libertarian of sorts and his arguments in favor of his right to build it are sound. It's just that he's going to create a concentration of like 50,000-60,000 extremely poor people a large proportion of which are undocumented, don't speak english, have no education, etc in a location that's extremely far away from practically everything. It's going to be weird. Also not a lot of long term provisions to pay for services and infrastructure.

Understandable why so many, especially in today's economy, would take the offer to buy a cheap lot and put up a trailer and DIY yourself some kind of homestead, but man, I think going forward 20-30 years that place is going to be rough.

I think the only other similar places in the US would be the deserts north of LA, where there are huge settlements of people living in trailers and it's really bleak and weird.

I saw this website, all about the place. Looks like the owner does Uncle Slaton financing, IOW "Owner financed, strictly to them that's got no kind of credit, 'cuz he knows they're slackers and they'll miss that payment and he takes it back..."
13% foreclosed and back in the hands of this developer? Helluva scam. Nice work if you can get it...

  7. GooglEarth has some imagery that is supposedly uploaded within the past month, and it shows all kinds of development in all directions. Most obvious new feature is the completed Grand Parkway east of I-69 and down to Baytown.

Another curious feature is a Hispanic neighborhood east of Roman Forest that appears to have sprung from nowhere and is adding trailer homes on individual plots and some new tract homes. I was unaware it existed two years ago. I have no idea which neighborhood it is, but the Grand Parkway is close by.

So it went into hibernation as a 5-story project and came out as a 21-story building? Isn't this like the third or fourth project that's mushroomed in size, in addition to the zombie projects that have come back to life with new names (hello, Langley!)? I guess $100 a barrel oil must make all the real estate developers giddy...

Love it. It reminds me of the Menil, the new Modern Art Museum expansion, and little bit of the McGovern Centennial Gardens. It seems like it would fit in better at in the Museum District but love that it adds to a different part of the city right off Buffalo Bayou.

Reminds me of something the Smithsonian might have commissioned...

I really do appreciate electricity but power lines and their poles are so ugly. I wish we could put the lines underground but I guess that would be too expensive. 😕

If we all get solar paneling, we won't need powerlines. Or ERCOT. It's going to take a while, though...

Even METRO admits that light rail is a huge development catalyst.  One of the board members said as much during a meeting.

Rail is a catalyst wherever it goes. DC got quite a bit of redevelopment on H Street as a result of the trolley. In places where there is zoning, rail stops are always tagged for highrise redevelopment.

Haven't heard anyone mention it in a while. I'm still very much in favor of the idea, but also very skeptical that something of that scale could get built there.

I'm seeing more than a few zombie projects come back to life in the last few months. If 1717 Bissonnet can be revived as the Langley, there's no reason someone won't attempt to put the shock paddles to this one...

Whomever* is on the floors directly across from MST's pool are going to have a fun view and vice versa. You can practically see straight into the rooms at Brava

    *or whoever I can't remember

Can't be nearly as much fun as the view the DFW air traffic controllers had into the hotels. One day the guys were scanning over with their binoculars and a guy was on the deck in his swimshorts...until the woman he was there with hastily pulled him back indoors...
