Hess Tower: Office Skyscraper At 1501 McKinney St.
crunchtastic replied to Ethanra's topic in Downtown
Maybe it depends on who's answering the question. What's the better revenue generator? A condo bldg at 50% occupancy with half of those a bad debt bubble, or an undeveloped block with an income stream.- 1,031 replies

That looks nice. After having lived in San Antonio for a long time, a Lake Flato building is really obvious, but it's still nice. The BB partnership has done cool things with trying to buy up bayou-fronting parcels, the trails out on the east side of the bayou, and etc. Good for them. The software photo selections never cease to amaze, though. That one boy looks like he's wearing a straightjaket and combat boots. On the other hand, at least they visually acknowledged the middle-aged hippies who help fund much of this stuff.

Romanos! Sbarro? That's airport concourse pie, not pizza, lol! -
SA is lacking in the performing arts, and strip clubs. I always found SA to be a crappy town for live music but a great place for neighborhood bars. Also rec league softball, dart league, and other relics of blue collar life, are still popular there. And the number and frequency of big, really good festivals easily trumps Houston. Not to mention the 2 theme parks.

I just heard the latest demo rumors. Apparently the Roll-N Saloon At 4200 San Felipe Street, Houston, TX (or rather the little strip center it's in) is slated for demo and to be replaced by an 'upscale retail center.' Could this be part of another project? I have zero confirmation, but my buddy at work just read it on his Houston Aggie alum forum. Too bad. That's the sort of neighborhood bar I wish we had more of. LeRoy Melcher / Melcher Investments.

Those tiles are awful, and a lot more ugly up close and personal. The photos don't do them justice. When you see the west side of the building coming up to it from Shepherd, it looks like giant, beige plaid golf shorts.

Worse than the mafia. There's a great old postpunk album by (coincidentally) The Godfathers, called Birth.School.Work.Death. We used to joke that it summed up the Aramark business model. Add "prison" "airports" and "arena concessions" and you can't escape Aramark, ever. Ever!

TMC BioPort: 500-Acre Bio Manufacturing Campus
crunchtastic replied to Urbannizer's topic in Going Up!
There's always going to be a cheesy, phony theme. Less predictably cheesy would be a good start. I saw 'Europa' and was hoping to see them step up the game with an astronomical/greek mythology theme, but alas. The European village thing is so overdone.- 160 replies

gah!! these names make me crazy. But then I guess no one wants to live on a piece of barren, frozen rock in an atmosphere that cannot support human life. The Towne Centre would not be very pedestrian-friendly there. I wish developers would think bigger when it comes to names. Europa was just a minor goddess, and only got a moon named after her. I'd prefer to see something a little more majestic, like, "Uranus at SugarLandian Shores".- 160 replies

At UH? My understanding is they own the land and manage the student housing themselves.

I heard it is going in along Wheeler, where the old outdoor pool was, between the towers and the quad.

We went to Calliopes today and it was damn tasty. Po'boys were good. good bread. Roast beef and gravy were definitely homemade. Also, if you like fried rice: my BF said theirs is 'almost' as good as at the old Chicken and Egg Roll. Which is saying a lot. And they do say it like the street in NOLA and not the standard pronunciation. "cal ee opes" with the emphasis on opes.

Good rumors travel fast. I was at a party on Monday with much rumor spreading about Monica Pope in that location. Of course we were all drunk and in the pool by then, but hey.- 1,531 replies

Your screen name is my new all time favorite on the internet. With the possible exception of a dude I spied on a national economics forum who calls himself 'manwhich'. Welcome to the HAIF! -
Depression and PTSD is an issue that is, unfortunately, still in the shadows in our society. But as someone who quotes Ayn Rand in their signature, I would hope that you that you see suicide for what it is: not necessarily a result of mental illness, (although it often is) but rather the ultimate act of self-will. In many cases it is the rational response to a situation. Any society that accepts capital punishment but considers suicide a sin is deeply, philosophically flawed.
