  1. Glad to find this post. Just purchased the book! I can't believe we went backwards on this over the years. Glad to see us SLOWLY stepping forward again. Can you imagine how rich the city would be to have been able to revitalize along the same routes and stations?
  2. For once, the rendering of a bunch of people making use of a space are true. Can't wait to check it out myself. Joggers eh?
  3. How Adorable! Don't let Tripp Isenhour anywhere near.
  4. The landing pattern for runway 12R (the only part that would be affected) would NOT be affected. The planes as today fly the pattern to the west of the high rises. The new tower would have been happily in the bunch out of the way. It wouldn't be hard to change airspace rules around downtown high rises anyway for whatever reason, just as they were after 9/11. Takeoff being affected is ridiculous as you're up above 1000 ft well within a couple seconds after takeoff, way before nearing downtown. Those findings were so 1980s. It even states that it'd just be something new for pilots to look out for, as any mountain, radio tower, or building is.
  5. The problem is people can't seem to think about things in the long run. Yeah, one little light rail isn't going to change the world over night, but we have to start somewhere don't you think? Plus I never mentioned anything about a measly light rail. We need a better transportation system period, no matter what the best solution is. Opposition to such improvements astounds me and is very unsettling that my future and the children's future rely on people who have that kind of mentality. Wouldn't it have been fantastic as a teenager or young adult, to easily find your way to the downtown library, to the museums, parks, places to eat, places to hang out, and places to discover in your city? It's not rocket science. Look at the cities you can already do that in. I get it... when auto sales go down and oil drama... I get it...
  6. We need a fine mix of closer residential spaces, more retail, and specifically a WAY better public transportation system to get things going in downtown. Does the chicken or the egg need to come first? They need to stop playing that game! Suck it the hell up and develop simultaneously, and you'll have real success. Until then, visitors and ourselves will never be able to visit one specific place in Houston to experience the amazing mix of culture we have... the culture of Houston.
  7. I fear for what will become of the Almeda Mall space. I have wanted that place torn down for a while now. I was a little kid when I noticed how it was dying down. One day my mother was taking me for a ride on the mini-train, the next day it was all but a distant memory. I will vomit if it becomes extra space for more of those strip centers. I hate the "let's gear it towards the demographic" instead of an idea outside the box that would benefit or inspire the area for the better. The planning around there sucks. Damn cookie-cutter houses went up like zits.
  8. Ugh I wish I could afford it now. Who wants to share a 1 bed loft at Rise!? Let's finish UofH first On their website the available ones showing are between 130,000 and 500,000
  9. LOL Coit Tower No houstonnoob, I would be the last person to know how much things would cost right now. I hadn't seen The Cosmopolitan before so I just previewed it. I really would want to choose what I had and come up with the entire look myself though. That place wouldn't be for me. The bathroom looked nice.
  10. Have you tried www.apartmentratings.com I ran into this page just yesterday http://www.gunn.net/rise9438.htm I LOVE the space but I hear price is too much for what you're getting. I think the reviews pertain to the whole Post complex. I would love to live in the tower. I'd totally gut the kitchen and bathroom. That granite has got to GO. So much potential. Can someone say "The Bold Look of Kohler"?
  11. You know I never thought about the stadium but I actually don't think it's that bad. That's a massive compliment from me as I'm always for new and modern improvements and walk around campus with a barf bag because of some of the disgusting buildings. I'm scared that if they built a new one, they would go overboard with it and be something where they try too hard, like the Beijing Olympic Stadium
  12. Neon lighting is very outdated Gives the flavor of dated ideas. No forward progress.
  13. THANKYOU for FINALLY mentioning LED lighting. I'll just point you to colorkinetics To light up downtown SMARTLY you could hope for a collaboration between all the businesses. It doesn't mean you need all this bright lighting peeping through your loft window as some people mentioned. LED gives off soft lighting and if used in the right way, could lead to something beautiful and spectacular. You just need to highlight a couple simple key elements of buildings to make it work. Simplicity would work. People definitely aren't going to say "lets go to Houston to see the lit up downtown" but it does leave some kind of impression of the city. It might be tucked in the far back of the head and you might not be able to put your finger on it, but there's something about the city that left an impression on you. Even if it's something small. It would give the city some kind of character. Lets just get rid of that disgusting neon green edge of that highrise we have now. It's been done.
  14. You definitely get used to the walking and it helps the Chick-Fil-A go down. Someone mentioned earlier about underground classes. I would hate a class underground. I already hate classes with no windows. I'd feel trapped and totally uninspired . I'd be more distracted trying to find some kind of MacGyver way to get out of there into the open. Big open spaces with lots of sunshine are better. Does someone smell a tad of clastrophobia? Anyway the whole new plan on expanding UofH sounds great. I only wish I would have had the chance to experience it.
