  1. Does anyone remember the Winterland Ice Skating Rink located at 2400 Norfolk? This is right off of Kirby kind of behind the Ninfas. The owners name was Charles or Chuck Rolland, I believe. If anyone has a pic to share that would be cool. I would really like to see what the place looked like. I am doing some research on the early 60s in Houston and that place plays a big part. Thanks a bunch!

  2. Does anyone know of ant hauntings in that area? I worked for a TV atation a few years back and we did a story on some house in that neoghborhood that the neighbors claimed was haunted. However I cannot remember which house. I do know it was off of N. MacGregor. If I see it again I will remember. I have to take a drive by there tomorrow.

    BOO!

  3. No, he did not speak at NASA the day before he was murdered. He spoke of NASA on September 16, 1962 at Rice University, perhaps one of his greatest speaches ever. There was even an opened top limo ride down Main Street. You can find the picture in the Houston Chronicle archives at the library.

  4. $900K for the Hearse today. That is a ridiculous price. I love this country !

    Hey digital, do you think maybe there was evidence left in the Hearse, and somebody wanting to protect LBJ bought it, so that they could preserve LBJ's good name ?

    No, all of the good evidence was in the Lincoln, which at Parkland was scrubbed clean for some reason. I have some pictures of the limo parked outside of Parkland and you can clearly see a bucket next to it that was used to wipe it down. I know that on one of these threads there is a picture of the limo as it sits on display in Dearborn, Michigan. However that one is not exactly the one JFK was riding in. It is a "reconstruction" of the original one. If you get a chance there is this good book, very rare, but available in most university libraries called "LBJ a Study of Illegetimate Power", it goes into detail about what a crook, and all around scoundrel LBJ and his cronies were.

  5. Yes, H-Town Man;

    Those other men knew waht they were up to. In that picture you can almost see the lamb being led to slaughter. While jfk was no inocent lamb, they shouldn't have done what they did. They should have just qaited for the Marylin Monroe stuff to come out...oh wait she was already gone. Very sad.

  6. Okay, I have one for all of you. Who was the mayor of Houston in 1963? Lewis Cutrer. This guy lived in River Oaks. Before he became mayor he was the city attorney. This Cutrer guy was a definate good ole' boy. He probably tutored the good ole' boy of all good ole' boys, Bob Lanier. I have heard things from very reliable sources. Cutrer is the guy at the microphone. There is a terminal at IAH named after him. Anyway, check out this picture that I managed to get my hands on. It was taken at Hobby Airport on 11/21/63. The skelatal, anemic looking guy on the left is Albert Thomas. He was also on Air Force One on 11/22/63 when when the chief conspirator, LBJ, was sworn in, as was the late Jack Valenti. Look at the picture, they knew they were going to kill him.

  7. I remember Winterland. Is that the one you meant? I went there in the early 60s.

    The ice rink where I used to take lessons (in my early 20s) was in Town & Country (Katy Freeway at West Belt.) It was part of a building called the Farmer's Market. There were a lot of little shops in one half of the building, but in the other half were two ice skating rinks. One was regulation size and the other was a smaller practice rink. The building was built around 1970. In 1974, the roof was damaged by a tornado that passed over. After it was repaired, the rink was under new management and I stopped taking lessons. Instead of having classes just for adults, they put us in a class with teenagers. The instructor kept tapping a broomstick on the ice (kind of like a loony dance master) so most of the adults quit.

    The building was torn down when the mall was built in the early 80s.

    Yes, you are correct, it was Winterland. I think that building is still there.

  8. Does anyone have any information on this deserted mansion at 5130 S. MacGregor Way?

    Or, What about this one at 5326 Calhoun:

    There is another one at around 3200 Oakmont that looks haunted. If it isn't haunted it should be. I will post that picture later in the week.

  9. Does anyone remember the movie JFK? There was a scene where Jim Garrison (K. Costner) was interrogating David Ferrie (J. Pesci). Ferrie mentions that on the night of 11/22/63 he drove to Houston with some friends "to go ice skating". I did some research on this a few years back and I found out that the place he went to was located at 2400 Norfolk. The place was called Wonderland. This would place it somewhere behind the Ninfas on Kirby. I drove through there the other day and I saw this building that looks like it might have been an ice skating rink many years ago. Now it houses the BMW repair shop. Does anyone remember this ice rink?

    And as a connection to one of the other threads, he stayed with his friends at the Alamo Motel on South Main.
