  1. I don't see the value of comparing Houston and NYC. we've been down that path many times on this forum and nothing really comes out of it. I know I did respond as such, i couldn't help it... But when i used to spend a lot of time in new york, i only took the subway to get to certain special destinations, day to day stuff everything i could possibly need was within a 10-15 minute walk. To your question on taking a private vehicle and the advantages - yes i do like having that option in Houston. But I would like other options as well. I used to live in Montrose and would bike everywhere. Being able to take the bayou downtown and feel safe doing so even with my toddlers in a trailer was amazing. Walking to the red line and taking it to Reliant and not having to worry about parking, being able to have a few beers, and get out with no traffic was amazing. Walking to Dallas St and taking a single bus to an Astros game with my kid who loves to ride was amazing. I only drove to work (Clear Lake, the park and ride would have taken 1+ hour to go against traffic and I would still have needed my bike when I got to Bay Area) and it was amazing. BTW when I did live by work and was taking grad school classes at UH I did take the park and ride and walked to campus twice a week, for that 4-5:30 class. Coming back was much nicer in a bus where i could read and not have to worry about the gulf freeway. now we moved to Bellaire, still inside the loop. To get downtown on a single bus to the med center, then the train would take an hour. To go 8 miles. And I picked a destination right on the rail line. 40 minutes to get to Reliant, 4.5 miles away. There are better ways to move around more efficiently, and it will take a combination of smart methods that should ideally relieve traffic and congestion, reduce emissions, and provide multiple options for residents.
  2. you could make the same slideshow called "Tales of Highway Hell" in Houston and have equivalent scenes and stats.
  3. Is your Japanese Blueberry in the Montrose median? I used to own on the block just south and was a regular at Khun Kay through when she retired (food went downhill after that IMO though some items were still good). It does seem like a small block to fit this size in but as far as the area, but this is the direction things are going. Every apartment going up or proposed in the area are in the 8 story range. I for one look forward to the density.
  4. European cities stations being outside of their core still have rail connectivity within their core, which we're missing (for now). I haven't been following this thread because this train won't be useful to me or many people I know. I do think this type of infrastructure is important, but for now when we go to Dallas we need a car and also have car seats and a dog to deal with, so we drive. If I go alone I take Megabus, which is much cheaper than this train is projected, and is easily accessible (for me) downtown. so who will this train serve? a replacement for weekly business folks that take SW now? students? visitors? for any of these people, there needs to be a direct link to the urban core if the train ends at the NW transit center.
  5. Trying this again. Mound of dirt, some trees, and a weird sign.
  6. Swamplot article on the project: http://swamplot.com/gibbs-boathouse-redo-will-welcome-restaurants-retail-deck-seating-aboard-the-corner-of-w-gray-and-montrose/2018-03-14/
  7. I thought both sites were owned by Biba at one point. I'm hoping this means he sold the land. Three restaurant groups have been run out 607. According to HCAD, the owner at 607 went from 'NOONKY INC' to 'HOUSTON W GRAY STANFORD LLC' in 2017. That goes for 603, 607, and 611. 615 is also HOUSTON W GRAY STANFORD LLC, but was not 'NOONKY INC' previously.
  8. There is a sign/ad up at the old Fuzzy's location for 8000 sqft multi-tenant living coming soon. I didn't catch the realtor name nor am I sure on the exact location. If its Fuzzy's it will be interesting to see if they took up the old lot as well with structure and include a structure for parking.
  9. saw this mural over the weekend, thought it was pretty funny and people here would enjoy it. This is on La Branch and Truxillo (near Alabama). wasn't sure where to post, figure this thread worked.
  10. This is the west end of Lamar St downtown. the dedicated street bike lane used to end at Bagby and there was a small section where it doesn't connect to the larger path that takes you to the bayou, they closed that gap.
  11. They should rename them the Arlington Rangers. Wouldn't be unprecedented (see Anaheim). Also a note from earlier - being at the Ballpark for a day game in July was the hottest I've ever felt in my life. It was a stagnant 105+, not sure what they were thinking scheduling an afternoon game that time of the year.
  12. Kroger is the only place I frequent in that area, and I normally ride my bike down Clay to Woodhead to get there. Too many parking lot entrances and cars darting all over the place. I actually had to go to JosABank and Kroger this last weekend and walked in between. Just a few stores and a parking lot apart. I almost got run over several times and watched people valet for Sunday brunch when they could have parked 50' away. Between the size of the parking lots, number of entrances, fast left turners coming off Gray, and the unfortunate nature of all the people around, not many people walk in that center. I think it will take more then an elevated crosswalk to change the way people move around the whole center.
  13. Are you suggesting foul play? Last article I can find (from fall 2015) still says HFD was investigating. This is the one with a welder on the roof and high winds right? Never heard the outcome, but early reports indicated it was an accident. There were people complaining about building near the cemetery but there will always be some group complaining about something with a development this big. It would be interesting to see what came of the HFD report and subsequent dealing with insurance.
  14. makes sense, lets waste a bunch more money deciding what to do.
  15. i live in that neighborhood. Depending on who I am talking to i say Montrose or Midtown. I never say neartown, if I did no one would have any idea what I'm talking about and I would just have to explain using Montrose and Midtown as references anyways.
  16. From CVHS. The lights on the old Continental building changed colors over time. And what you can't see here are the 40 spotlights hitting the clouds
  17. Looks great. I snapped a pic but don't have space to upload... Will try tomorrow
  18. Broadcast locations: Wednesday through Friday, SportsCenter and ESPN’s NFL shows will originate from downtown Houston – adjacent to the Toyota Center between Austin, Bell, LaBranch and Leeland Streets, while Mike & Mike, First Take and Outside the Lines will be live from nearby Lucky’s Pub. Fans are invited to view live programming from both locations. Additionally, ESPN Radio’s The Stephen A. Smith Show and Russillo & Kanell will broadcast from Radio Row at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Also found this article which is a bit old but didn't see it linked on this thread: http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/news/2017/01/20/espn-s-houstonsuper-bowl-broadcast-location-to.html Nothing definitive on why they moved, just some political weasel words:
  19. Appears that with parking above and below the store, there will be a good chunk of land required for ramps though.
  20. from tonight, bridge for Hazard was the only one on. i assume these are not going to change colors?
  21. My coworker just showed me this picture from the Louisville game. I was there but couldn't find myself. Its amazing at the clarity and resolution, you can zoom in pretty far: https://gigapixel.panoramas.com/houston/football/20161117/
