I know there's been an increase in interest in what's been dubbed "lost media" in recent years - i.e.: content or materials tied to productions that either are exceptionally rare or otherwise hard to find through conventional means, for whatever reason. While I think the term has been watered down somewhat, it is still kind of cool to either see something that hasn't been seen in a long time or otherwise offers insight into some aspect of the medium.

I thought it would be an interesting question to pose if anyone had any requests for rare or random things they've seen on tv locally over the years. I've gotten them over the years on my YouTube channels and it's been kind of nice to actually find or fulfill some of them when/if I can.

A personal request is something I may or may not have - I just don't know any more. I'd seen the tape ages ago and now I simply can't find it.

    Rick's Furniture: The RIck's Furniture "Show" & Commercials - 2000-2002

Basically an infomercial for the old RIck's Furniture locations (4114 N. Freeway / 13705 E. Freeway / 5025 Jensen Dr.) that began right around the year 2000. It showed up pretty frequently at around 5 AM on Channel 39 for a while. Later that year, it picked up a near-permanent berth on Channel 55 at 4 AM - in between a rerun of Have Gun, Will Travel and First Business - so it was easy to record as it was on almost EVERY morning. It was hosted by local musician Bruce Middleton who, at various times, was either paired with a woman to talk about some of the special deals or a kid to show off the comfort of the furniture. It looked like the perfect 4 AM infomercial as well. It likely was spliced together from two halves as the first half was a bit more professionally done. The second half had some odd gaps and scenes that held a moment or two too long as well as a take where the host flubbed a line and immediately tried to pick it back up with zero editing.

I seem to recall reading an article online around that time (when it was still airing) from a paper in Montgomery County or somewhere on the north side that profiled him and mentioned his work in the infomercial. He had a quote to the extent of "The music that I did for that was really special"... but from what I remember it was just a reworked version of Grover Washington Jr.'s Mister Magic  and a few various clips of him playing the Rick's Furniture jingle (You'll find at Rick's Furniture / we've got prices you can live with) on the sax.

The infomercial was STILL airing well into 2001. Only stopped in the late summer. Recall running into it a couple of weeks before 9/11 and then it was just pulled.

Mr. Middleton was in their fantastic commercials that aired around that same time as well. I know I have a few of those. One had a version where he generally pitched the place and there was a spot where he would pause and respond to a respond to an off camera comment that said "Whoa, those are some crazy prices!" and he would say "Crazy prices yeah!". It was hastily edited in, though the version where there's only awkward silence (in place of the off camera comment) actually aired a number of times.  Usually in the graveyard hours.

Another one he sang and danced a bit in went something like...

Whatchu gonna give me for that bedroom set?

Whatchu gonna give me for that sofa set?

Whatchu gonna give me for that dinette set?

    Hoooooh, yeah!

The furniture maaannnn, is in the house!

At the time, I thought it would be great to get online but we just didn't have the video sharing or streaming tech we do today. If I ever find it, it's all going up on my channel.

Bruce is my cousin. You just unlocked a memory. He was also in the Thunder Soul documentary in 2010 about Conrad Johnson.

there's only 2 reliable paths from one side of the tracks to the other between i10 and 610.

That will increase to three once the Quitman overpass is built. It's too bad that the plans don't include a Cavalcade overpass/underpass at the railroad. I frequently see trains stopped on the West Belt track there.

  3. The Stop I-45 group is trying to stop this drainage project. Their reasoning is TxDOT has claimed it's not part of the NHHIP to skirt air monitoring requirements.

Local residents have concerns too. Honestly, I was at the last meeting and while I believe they dropped the ball on notifying the community on the project, the project is a plus if it reduces flooding. It's not like properties will be taken.

So based on this, there might still be changes to the design here and there? I realize nothing substantial...

On the Hardy Connector site, there are some renderings for landscaping, park caps, trails, and other amenities. The opposition wants no highway at all or an at grade parkway with a 30 mph speed limit. I feel like Hardy/Elysian serves that purpose now since it went on a road diet and bike lanes were added. Maybe they want something like Lakeshore Dr. in Chicago with similar landscaping on a smaller scale.

Those plaques used to be everywhere. Unfortunately, they seem to get demolished when the item is rebuilt. I've always thought there should be a museum for them.

When the original 1960 Ardmore St. Bridge over Brays Bayou was demolished in 2018, the contractor told me that the plaque would be removed and preserved by Harris County. I'm not sure if the City of Houston does the same thing. I think some plaques also fell victim to vehicle accidents or scrap metal thieves.

Seeing that plaque makes me realize that the City of Houston seems to have abandoned the idea of street intersection grade separations after 1962. I can't think of any strict street-to-street separations financed by CoH since then.

The Waugh/Allen Parkway Street to Street separation was constructed around 1980 and the Studemont/Allen Parkway separation was constructed in 1967.

  6. This is nice. My coworkers at the County kept saying it was going to be a dog park, but that never made sense to me given that residential isn't concentrated around that area, and most dog parks tend to be close to residential areas. Now, if they could just demolish 1301 Franklin, that'd be great.

My house is just south of 1604 off of O'Connor. The exit for O'Connor is approximately half way between Judson and Redland. I can attest that this is a very busy part of 1604 and is in need of expansion. There is already major construction to the west where 1604 crosses Interstate 10 and to the east where 1604 crosses Interstate 35. Fortunately, I have discovered alternate routes since moving here two and a half years ago.

I didn't know you'd moved! Hope you're enjoying San Antonio.

I've been in twice since it opened. CVS wasn't exactly a happy place but good lord does Dollar Tree just suck the life out of everyone inside. Azkaban vibes.

The one on W. Gray in River Oaks Shopping Center isn't bad. They have a semblance of organization there. The one in Shadow Creek in Pearland on 2234 is probably the neatest and most organized one I've been to yet. Clear aisles and items I can't find at other locations, so less soul sucking and more treasure hunting.

I wouldn't be surprised if this location starts locking up items and outright stops carrying certain items. Poor Midtown can't catch a break.

  9. I went for that location for the first and last time today. Felt like the wild west. As I walked in, a guy was walking out nonchalantly with a garbage bag full of stuff he'd stolen. Considering it was Dollar Tree, he probably made off with $9 worth of stuff.

The NHHIP will extend the NB feeder from its current terminus to join the current feeder on Hamilton, so it will dovetail with that work.

Correction: should be Chartres, not Hamilton

Oh no!!!!  The feeder will be shut down for SEVERAL WEEKS!!  How will we get through this nightmare?  (And does it actually have anything to do with the I-45 project?  I thought nothing was starting on that until later this year.)

I went to the meeting tonight and here's what I found out.

    • A 96 inch storm sewer line is being installed underneath the feeder from the 288/59 interchange to N. MacGregor with an output to Brays Bayou. The feeder will be closed in phases. The first phase will close the NB feeder between N. MacGregor and Binz. The second phase will close the feeder between Binz and Southmore. The final phase will close the feeder between Southmore and Cleburne. The entire feeder will not be closed during the project, and the N. MacGregor and Southmore exits from 288 NB will remain open during the entirety of this project. When the section between N. MacGregor and Binz will be closed, NB feeder traffic will detour westbound along N. MacGregor and north along Almeda to eastbound Binz to rejoin the NB feeder. The Binz exit will also be closed at that time and will be detoured to the N. MacGregor exit to follow the detour along Almeda. The entire project will be tentatively completed around Spring 2027.
    • This is not officially part of the NHHIP, but it's essentially getting ready for the additional drainage that's going to come with the new 288/59 interchange. Additionally, this project ends where the current terminus of the NB feeder is. The NHHIP will extend the NB feeder from its current terminus to join the current feeder on Hamilton, so it will dovetail with that work. The first mainlane construction of the NHHIP will be at the 288/59 multiplex, so that work will be starting when this project is finishing up, so in a way, it feels like preliminary work before the official NHHIP begins.

  12. I came across this flier. I've seen vaguely worded signs about road closures, lane closures, various surveying stakes, and a temporary asphalt driveway for HEB has been paved on N. MacGregor, but no info from Drive 288 or TXDOT. I'm going to try to go to the meeting. If they're expecting closures that long, I'm thinking they're reconstructing the entire intersection or replacing bridges?
