  1. I enjoy the artistic contribution the churches make to the neighborhood, but I'm with you on this one. This building needs to become something else.
  2. I love it. The bridge is necessary for those of us north of the bayou, and the arch centers the downtown skyscrapers right in the middle of the view. I think it makes for a very photographic sight. Two thumbs up from me.
  3. They were on the Woodland Heights spring home tour two years ago. The Christmas home tour going on this weekend is Heights proper.
  4. The home is gorgeous. I've been in there a couple of times. One of the few houses in Houston that actually have a basement. I'll have to check with my Karen Derr contacts and see what the scoop is. I hope his passion for redeveloping homes will move him into another 'rescue of an old home in the Heights' venture.
  5. Just walked thru the complex. There is a lot of nothing there. Stepped into House of Blues for a bit, looked really nice. But they dont do happy hours which really surprises me, so me and my group of beer hounds will seek solace elsewhere. I will revisit the place come spring when more things open, but I hope it does really well.
  6. King Biscuit. Oh, and I forgot about the Sunday Brunch at Dharma! VERY good. And VERY busy too.
  7. Chilosos on 20th and Houston Tamale Factory on Studewood/11th have some awesome breakfast burritos.
  8. Work on an offshore rig. Or spend a winter in Alaska up on the slope. You have no social life, but your bank account gets ridiculously fat. Or does that fall into one of those 'jobs he wouldn't want to do' categories?
  9. I had 8am classes because I was eager to learn in the beginning. Then, I ended up sleeping through my 8am's because my education extended well past midnight the night before. Plus I was on an island and the beach was 10 minutes down the hill so there wasn't a whole lot of incentive to be asleep by 10pm. HtownWxBoy nailed it in that much of your 'education' will come outside of the classroom. Many consider their formative years where they grew up as a youth. Not me. I was shaped entirely by my experiences at university, and the person I am today is wholly representative of what I learned there.
  10. Almost 2 years ago as I was looking for a new place to live I went to these places with my realtor to look at a couple of the units. Given the prices and location it seemed like a good deal. When I got there there were so many red flags suggesting the condos were in bad shape. Crumbling mortar everywhere, rusted steps, and on top of that as I recall the monthly association fees were over $500. That immediately told me that either a) the association didn't use the money to fix the property or if they did, this complex was on the verge of a massive one time levy from each homeowner to fix everything. Had to walk away...no other choice. Its a great location though, but given the difficulty in developers to secure financing now, I can't help but think these may sit around as condemned units for a while...
  11. I can't comment on your salary amount, however as a Canadian who grew up in Calgary I can comment on the cost of living difference. Even if you came down at 85K, you'll pay less tax, less for food and less for your much bigger home here than in Calgary. So dont necessarily think that you need to negotiate a higher salary to increase your standard of living.
  12. In this St Arnolds article, they do make mention of the Hardy Yards project briefly, with that being one reason St Arnolds chose the location to build. Hmmm. Maybe its not as dead as we think? Just in hibernation? http://www.globest.com/news/1212_1212/houston/172776-1.html
  13. A mattress store and a check cashing locale would be peachy.
  14. I used to work in one of these buildings on the SW corner and still have friends that work there currently. Apparently they just extended their lease at 5333 Westheimer and will be there for at least several more years, and the current owners have committed to upgrading the building as well as the parking garage. So not sure if this is the location that this project is actually planned to be, but based on the investment in rebuilding the infrastructure that is there already, I'm sure its years away at this point.
  15. If I had to guess it would be a mattress store and a check cashing boutique.
  16. Adrian Garcias office just emailed me and said the Planning and Development Dept hasn't received any permit application or subdivision application for review on this. Seems to me the 'new leasing' part of this sign is quite a bit premature.
  17. I'm completely against this. I do recognize the need for high density dwellings in the area, this location is just wrong wrong wrong. I just sent a note to Adrian Garcias office so I'm curious what they have to say on the matter. Interesting that the Innerloopcondos group has been quiet for a couple of years now. I know there was some pretty good opposition to that and it was much closer to I-10.
  18. Sweeeeet. I just noticed a Yard House is going up here. Texas' first. This will ensure I leave the loop on a regular basis. http://www.yardhouse.com/coming_to.asp
  19. The sign has been there for a while. I believe its just for the lot next to OC, so I can't imagine how they would get something so large in that area. Besides, if something large is intended for that area, I think you'll see Ashby High Rise related issues pop up all over again. I can't ever imagine something like that coming to the area, unless it was on the periphery along I-10 or 45. If it does, I'll be one of the first to picket.
  20. Vitamin Shoppe is new too. Looks like the Arbys (previously at the new KFC/TB location) moved to a shared building.
  21. Its not exactly what you want, but the 1st page of the promo flyer for the Sawyer Heights Target center has some 2008 demographics on it that certainly include downtown numbers... http://www.propertycommerce.com/flyers/flyer44.pdf EDIT: Also check out the last few pages...
  22. Oh yay. Yippee. The website now shows a Cash Store coming in. I can only imagine the clientele that's going to bring in.
  23. I would second the rental idea. I moved to Houston in 2001 and bought right away, however looking back a rental unit would have benefitted me greatly. I knew nothing about the city and ended up buying a place that wasn't bad at all, but had I spent 6-12 months looking around and getting to know the city and the neighborhoods, I would have definitely chosen differently. There are homes in the Heights that can be rented for less than $1000 per month as well. I have a few friends that have bought here and make the commute to the Med Center, and they say its about a 20 min drive and no freeways required.
