  1. I was in Awash when it was there. I like to think I have a reasonably catholic palate but that was some of the strangest food I've ever had. The ambience left a little to be desired - it was basically an office space with some tables scattered around. It wasn't a great surprise when it went under....

  2. FYI, the District is one of the sponsors of the Montrose Crawl. The Crawl generated about $63K in additional revenue for Montrose businesses, plus a nearly $5K donation for the Houston Area Women's Center. And a whole bunch of people got sh!tfaced and it was way awesome. Can your management district manage that?

Monthly pub crawls. Sign me up!

  3. I like the idea of a logo for the Montrose management district-- I think Upper Kirby district did well with their UK idea and the funny phone booths--- I'm not sure what the logo is for Galleria but it's easy to distinguish the modern chrome traffic signals and bus stops etc

The logo possibilities for Montrose seem endless, but with the survey being so . . . . . atypical . . . . I wonder what type of suggestions they will receive.

I'd like to think they could do better than tired British kitsch.

  4. I'm appalled you can't see what's going on in your own neighborhood. I admit I'm generalizing and all of Montrose does not have these problems but enough of it does that it needs to be addressed.

An officer of the Management District spoke at the Winlow Place meeting last night. Two off duty HPD officers are now patrolling the area (separately) east of Montrose and a third will be added west of Montrose in the near future. A list of arrests and citations resulting from the increased security was read out. Shockingly, none were for violent crime or rape.

Let's not let one deliberately inflammatory post take this thread off topic.

  5. Those would actually make it more humid. Misting Stations work best in hot arid cities like Vegas or Phoenix which is lacking moisture. They should add col air station to simulate a cool breeze on a hot humid day.

The misting stations in Memorial work just fine. Running 35 miles/week all year round, I'm very, very glad of them in the height of summer.

  6. I don't anticipate seeing any of these characters in a brewpub but if I do will surely give them a wide berth.

Go to bars often enough, and they will stand out.

Spending $100 each and hanging with your buds is no big deal, it's the guys that do it obnoxiously and annoy people around them.

Now kids, here are some examples. Remember, pay attention, this might help you enjoy your evening better if you avoid the following examples:

But here is the "Jersey Shore" variation.

For those that need a better definition, here's a fairly accurate chart:

  7. I like what they are planning to do in terms of salvaging what they can in the building, if there's anywhere that's to be encouraged, it's here. That bend is finally going to be something with this place and the new restaurant opposite. As to the beer, if I don't like it, I won't go. Regarding the d-baggery or otherwise, I've yet to hear a satisfactory definition of that moniker, so wouldn't really know one if I saw one. Now if it's a-holes we're talking about, then those creatures are present in nearly every bar I go to. There's little I can do about that other than never go out, and I'm not going to do that.

Let's just give the place a chance*....

    *Unintentional play on words.

  8. It was and is a major artery... and that's coming from a neighbor.

Either you misread my post, or are being tendentious. W. Alabama was never designed as a major artery, but has been tarted up as one in order to keep East West (read: commuters into and out of downtown) traffic moving at as good a clip as possible. Speed is very much an issue on this road....and that's coming from a neighbor.

  9. There's probably blame to go around, but the volume and intensity of the traffic on the road certainly didn't help matters and won't in the future. We can agree I think that the road is handling more traffic than it was designed to and that the resulting stress on the system is going to increase the likelihood of accidents, particularly at junctions.

The report didn't say anything about a driver stopping or being cited....

  10. I've crossed Alabama at various times of the day thousands of times since I moved into the neighbourhood 10 years ago. The difference between what it was then and now is chalk and cheese. I know this is all part and parcel of urbanization and I accept that part of it - but the way the whole Alabama reconfiguration was steamrollered through - i.e. switch and bait - still sits very uneasily with me. I archived all my e-mails with the city on this issue, for all the good they'll do me or the neighbourhood. Anyway, many drivers, and a fair guess is that they predominantly commuters, treat it like it's a major artery, when it was never designed to be anything of the sort. How many major arteries have teachers leading a crowd of 12 year olds on a neighbourhood jog after school gets out? Here's one more thing that gives this neighbourhood character that will likely pass into memory all in the name of "Keeping Traffic Moving". I'm generally a fan of Bill White but he messed up badly with this particular street.

  11. It's been a long time since I banked on getting anything approaching a decent meal on a domestic flight. If I'm traveling for personal reasons, I bring a lunch. Business, I eat at the airport on my per diem. Airlines and food is a joke that hasn't been funny for a long time. International flights are a bit better but of course you pay through the nose for those.

  12. ditto!

does anyone know if the montrose blvd conservancy is still kicking? the walkable montrose plan would certainly solidify this area as "walkable".

i like this location for this building; however, i'd like it even more if the montrose blvd improvements were progressing. i do not see any activity on the conservancy website since '08.

My guess would be that that, like many other things, is a victim of the recession?
