The large store you mention between Times and Amherst could have been Rodney's.  I'm an old timer who frequented that area in the mid-50's.

That was it. My Mom used to work there when I was a kid. Knew Leonard Wells from there. Later opened his own men's store in the Galleria area (Fowler and Wells).

I couldn't find a rendering of the planned H-E-B Meyerland Plaza, but I can't wait to see how the design looks. Meyerland Plaza is prone to flooding, so I'm wondering why there will be first floor parking? Wouldn't it be more feasible and better in the long run (due to the area's known flooding problems) to leave the first floor has a loading area with a ramp leading to second floor parking? The grocery store could be on the second floor too or on a third floor (or both!).

From a layman's point of view, I avoid areas like Meyerland Plaza were the surface parking lot is known to flood during big and fast-moving rain storms. On the off chance I'm caught out in a torrential rain while I'm inside shopping or if I worked there, I'd feel safer knowing my car would be less likely to receive flood damage in an elevated parking structure. I think developers of retail, regular apartments, and mid-to-hi-rise residences should eliminate underground (like the Calais at Cortlandt Square in Midtown), surface, and first floor parking and focus on elevated parking with Houston's flooding in mind for future projects.

Ha. Although that would be nice I'm sure the last thing developers are worried about is keeping your car dry.

  3. I don't think Bellaire residents would go for a mini-mall. They rejected that in the 80's where the Episcopal school sits. Residential would be nice although not sure anyone could afford to develop it. No matter what they do the city is going to loose big on taxes.  Especially if HISD grabs it. The last thing they need is another non-taxable entity in a city that is already full of churches and schools.

not sure I am following, it looks like they've already got going pretty solid on the demo work. if they don't think they can complete by next year, why not just do all the work they can in the off season, then put a temp fence in, and then start again next off season?

I mean, if they won't be able to complete anything this off season, how will they be able to complete anything during any off season?

They should at least be able to complete the field portion, then put up a temporary wall while they complete the rest. At least you would think.

  5. It is very disappointing they cannot beat the Rangers. I mean the beck with winning a world series, the silver boot is all that matters.

I'm afraid Stro's just don't have the pitching this year to compete against the top clubs.

  6. I agree. They want a team that can sell tickets. Rice is lucky if 10,000 people attend one of their games. I will say with the new football complex Rice might be able to attract better players. Only problem Rice will insist they're players be able to read and write which puts them at a huge disadvantage with major schools in big conferences.

The new TV series 'Preacher' set in Texas and based on the comic by the same name had some shots of downtown as seen from the Bayou in episode 3 or 4.

Thought that was the Houston skyline. Love that show.

I found some old racetrack somewhere in South Houston, and it seemed to be for vehicles, not for horses. It had smaller loops inside and all. I'll try to find it again.

EDIT: found it, in 1978, in Google Earth, a racetrack appears at the southeast corner of Main and Hillcroft. It was gone by 1989.

Also called Meyer Speedway. Mostly stock car and funny car races. Also great demolition derby's back in the day.

the "desperately needed parking"? perhaps the author hasn't seen the surface parking covering the entire west side of the campus.  rice does many things right, but the west side of campus and deciding to erect a massive parking lot in this location are not one of them.

This lot is for the school administrators. They're not about to park on the other side of the stadium and walk a mile to their offices.
