  1. That did bring back some memories. It was a great place when it opened but as the Alief area went downhill, so did Fame City.
  2. I think you may be right. I remember eating at PoFolks a lot, just can't remember for sure if it was at this location or not. Seems like they had one in Sharpstown also. They had really good chicken fried steak as I remember.
  3. I'm sure your referring to the end of Greenwillow as it enters the field. I don't remember there being any other streets and this aeriel view from 1973 does not show any. Perhaps they were proposed but never materialized. http://www.historicaerials.com/aerials.php?scale=4E-06&lat=29.654765859779&lon=-95.4494877127064&year=1973
  4. I have mixed emotions about this move. On one hand having a real rivalry against the Rangers will be fun but on the other hand it's the dismal American League with their stupid designated hitter rule.
  5. Makes you miss the good old days before political correctness.
  6. I agree. Four or five stories is what I would call a midrise. And just because there are similar atrocities all over Houston, that doesn't make this one right. Still, as I said before, this is Houston and what can you do?
  7. So now it's apartments. I was hoping for a low income housing project but I guess this is the next best thing.
  8. I want to say the complex (including the pool, the skating rink, and the grounds) was called Gateway and they just called the pool itself the Crystal Pool.
  9. Tried it once. Nothing great. The close by Xuco Xucana is way better so I won't miss them.
  10. A friend sent me this link. It's the Westbury High School class of 62-65 web page. When you go to the "Tana's Reminisce" page you will find a ton of great historic Houston pictures and trivia, not just Westbury. Worth taking a look at. Warning: turn down your speakers before you click the link. It's one of those pages that automatically starts blasting music. Westbury High Web Page
  11. I don't know where you get your information from but I strongly disagree. Those "hippies" is what kept it alive for so long. Not just hippies but young people in general. What killed it, as you did point out was the terrible landowners and management. They kept raising the rent but did nothing to improve the place and did minimal maintenance. I knew some shop owners that just got fed up with the management and left. (They actually loved the "hippies").
  12. The Shamrock pool was definitely deeper. I even took SCUBA lessons there as a kid. And those diving towers were huge. At least they seemed that way.
  13. You should do well at that location. Lot's of families in the nearby neighborhood that should love your concept.. You should benefit from the nearby stadium crowd on weekends.
  14. As far as inside the loop, I've been to Piola's a couple of times and it's pretty darn good. The Quattro Formaggi pie is awesome. (Gorgonzola cheese, brie cheese and grana padano cheese)
  15. Nice. Brings back a lot of memories.
