  1. never touch the stuff.

not sure i want to snap my fingers and have hundreds of bats fly towards me ... i am sure i would need the chronic after that experience though. lol

but seriously, it is kinda spooky --these sounds, because like i said, it does not sound like crickets and birds are not usually up all night.

  2. has anyone else been hearing these weird chirping sounds at night? i thought it was birds or something as it kinda sounds like a fire detector that has a low battery. but the sounds come from one tree to the next (and sometimes from the sky).

    i was also thinking bats?

i know what crickets sounds like --or at least i thought i did.

been hearing it in westchase, but also was downtown last night and heard the sounds there too ... i have not seen any evidence of birds making the sounds.

  3. lol.  I agree.  It's funny how, because her brother is a developer, she thinks she can stick her nose into the industry.  I can't believe some of the things this lady says.

Yeah, let's "tear down" city hall... lol.

I wonder how much lobbying at city hall it would take for them to pass a referendum declaring that their place of business be razed for an oversized coffee stand on steroids.

    Even Donald isn't that dumb.

i do not play the 'city' card too often because i have lived other places than houston, but what the heck does she know about houston? i mean, how would she feel if some houston developer (say gerald hines or the like) said "let's raze gracie mansion"?

i doubt that would sit well with many new yorkers.

  4. From the quotes posted here she seems as if she was one strange lady, with ridiculous ideas to go along with that.

    -gold wig ( :D )

    -tear down central park

-loathing the Chrysler building (I mean come on...)

-wants more surface lots and less trees

-If she can't use slaves, then they are bad

-4 story star bucks and parking garage instead of Hou city hall

    @bruce_oneal

I think she was Donald's sister.  Well thats what Hornblower said.

    she sounds like an idiot.

  5. Alls I know is Gloria Trump was reported in the San Antonio express as saying "I'd like to rid Houston of it's City Hall.  I find it very underwhelming.  I'd like to see Donald venture into the South a little more.  I think he would be faced with huge challenges."

When asked what she'd like to see in lieu of the City Hall, she had this to say, "Well, a 4-level Starbucks would be nice.  Or a decent low-rate parking garage for the neighboring performance arts venues."

When asked if "The Donald" has any plans to delve into the Houston market, he said, "If an opportunity arises, sure.  I'm always looking for the next great thing.  Although I think it would be kind of strange to take away city hall, don't you?", with a smile.

Ms. Trump feels that a new City Hall should be constructed more towards George R. Brown Convention Center, an area she frequents, which is in the "heart" of downtown, and will lead to future growth.

These exerpts were reprinted with permission from Olmero Sanchez

and just who the heck is gloria trump?

  6. In another thread I mentioned an old 80's short-lived NBC soap called "Texas" set in Houston. I did a search for the show and found a site where you can watch the opening and closing sequences from the show. There are shots of downtown, San Jacinto monument, etc.

The 1981 theme is entirely different from 1982 and is very "Dallas"-esque. The 1982 theme is longer and has more shots of Houston including one of a TV station that I didn't recognize and couldn't make out the name. Could have been a fictitious one for the show.

Both are equally kind of cheesy, but fun! The quality's not all that great, but here it is anyway:

Click under where it says "Videos":

    "Texas" link

I've only watched the two opening sequences.

Oh, and for some reason that voice-over at the end of both videos just cracks me up.

gosh, could that opening have been less homogenous? not a black or brown face in the bunch. i just love how they whitewash texas like that. lol

  7. None of the designs for the Bank of the SW ever did anything for me.  The winning design looks like the 2 tallest buildings they buily in Philly around the same time.  Besides a few examples, mostly in Houston, I'm just not down with post-modernism.  Houston's downtown skyline is almost perfect in several ways.  I've always had a hard time imagining an addition that is taller than the current tallest 2 buildings, whatever they may be called nowadays.

It'll happen, and for the cities' sake, I hope it does, but I don't like the proposals that have been submitted so far, regardless of whether they'll be built or not.

you are so right. there are 2 buildings in philly with that distinctive crown. although the bank of the southwest would have been much taller.

  8. "well apparently when the wind was blowing at a good clip and 'ol glory was pulled out taut, it created so much force that it damaged the top 3 stories of the building that the pole mounts down through."

i'm no structural engineer but if a flag blowing around on the roof weakens teh structure of a skyscraper...isn't that in the least bit disturbing?

yeah, especially if i worked in that building...

  9. I don't think there will be anything taller in Uptown Houston in the near future, or for that matter, the far future.  Certainly not an office building in the near future.  I believe the vacancy rates are currently too high for any substantial new office construction.

I would also be quite surprised to see anything residential go higher than Transco, especially in the near future.  Personally, I think Uptown would look better with more shorter buildings (in the 35-40-50-60 story range), to fill in the area and make it more dense and urban.

Having said that, I would love to see a 70 story residential building, but I'd prefer to see it go downtown.

yeah, we need something like this that is going up in nyc. but honestly think it would be better suited for downtown than uptown.

  10. How would retro-fitting the dome with hotel boxes around the top, and availability for other sporting venues besides MLS be a better option than tearing it down to build an outdoor stadium?

Heres what we need to do:

    1.  Replace all the white painted skylights with new clear panes (like the original).

    2.  Replace the astro-turf with natural sod (if you all remember, sod used to work until they painted all the glass panes white so that the baseball players could see the ball when popped-up).

    3.  Take the top level, all the way around, and rip out the seats. In their place make hotel-rooms with one way glass.

    4.  Excavate around the dome & the colliseum and build parking garages that start a few levels below ground and only stand a few above ground (so that you don't lose the view of the dome from the street).

    5.  Contract a MLS team.

    6.  Contract high school and maybe even college sports (i.g. football playoffs, baseball playoffs, all-city championship games, etc.).

    7.  Continue to use for the Rodeo. (e.g. you can have 50cent or Beyonce playing in one while you have Alan Jackson or Tim Mcgraw playing in the other - trust me, you won't have enough people mad that they can't watch both at the same time to be a real issue.)

    8.  Build a museum on the ground level. Hell, build 3: 1 for the oilers, 1 for the astros, and 1 for the dome & houston itself.

    9.  Throw a little retail in there like how the Superdome has done. Call it the "Shops at the Dome".

    10. You could even build sky-bridge between the too (covered or not) and add a little mono-rail action to connect from the light-rail, extended parking, astroworld, the dome, & the stadium

We don't have to tear it down. We just need to get a plan and stick with it.

all of these great ideas. i wonder if anyone from the company (government entity) that manages the dome is on this list?

  11. If the dome is not going to be used for anything then I say tear it down and make room for a Soccer Specific Stadium.  Bring in a MLS franchise and build a 22,000 to 25,000 seat soccer stadium.  Maybe they could do something to remember the Astrodome by building a monument or incorporating some of it's aspects in the new stadium.  This would put Houston on the map globally and maybe get to host some World Cup Qualifiers or International Matches.  No doubt that a SSS would bring more excitement to the city and offer more entertainment and diversity than the dome is offering now!

yeah, and with houston's diverse population, soccer seems like it would be a major draw. that is a cool idea.

  12. A not-very-practical idea would be to convert it into a Metro Transit Center. It could be done in a sports theme with the train boarding at, say, home plate.

How many cities have something like that?

wow! that would be great. kinda like grand central station in a sports theme? i like that idea too. it could serve as the transit hub for the city (instead of downtown).

abundant parking, covered (dome) terminal, access to/from 610, 288 ... nice!

  13. I suspect you're right about that.

You know how Moody Gardens and other places have built indoor tropical rain forest environments?  I would like to see the Dome converted to an indoor Alpine meadow environment.  That way, in the middle of August when you get sick of the heat and humidity, you could go visit an artificial cool, pleasant, mountain scene.

an alpine meadow... now there's an idea.

  14. I personally like the idea of a Houston-oriented museum.  Houston has a very interesting history, full of a lot of significant events both to the city as well as to the country.  There could be displays comparing the "bigness" of Houston (landwise) to other cities, and maybe even a scaled, walk-through model of the city.  There could maybe even be a "Houston in transition" type exhibit, with like-like cityscapes of old Houston.  There could be an "experience" type exhibit of driving on the Gulf freeway in the 1940s, since it was the first of many that have shaped Houston today.

kinda like a houston world's fair? and by the way, what ever happened to those events? did they just kinda fade away?

  15. That would be incredible. I can so see that place being turned into a giant indoor park with all kinds of activities. No gas powered equipment allowed at all in it. We could have mountain climbing, Hiking trails. botancial gardens, bike trails, birds, butterflies, caves, swimming pools, education rooms, aquariums, fishing contests, paddle boats, and if we do it right sking, canoing, and all kinds of stuff. A massive indoor sporting complex.

We could even have a kids section.

exactly ... that's what i was thinking too ... apparently some group has plans for something like that, but not sure if/when it will get off the ground. i am sure funding and construction is a major issue for anything related to the astrodome.

  16. Maybe he was trying to get away from the stereotypical Johnson design.  Maybe he was bored with it.  When Ghery was commissioned for Chicago's Millennium Park he wanted to do something very very very different.  The city said "no" -- it was paying for a "Ghery" and it wanted structures that looked like Ghery's.  He was not able to turn his vision into reality.  Of course, for a piece of a $450,000,000 contract, I'd put my visiion on hold, too.

yeah, there's nothing like selling out ...

  17. Humm! I like the idea of a sports complex with mountains and stuff. I think that woudl work. But only if it is not to costly to get in. But I know Houston and they will charge an outlandish fee to get in.

yeah ... it would probably be outlandish. but then, so too would the fun ... can you imagine hiking through airconditioned comfort? lol
