  1. Can't remember the name, but it was a fast-food seafood place. There were several around town, but the ones I remember well were on I-45 and Monroe and I-45 and Park Place. Any ideas?
  2. Forgot...............I saw Elvis in '70 or '71 at the Rodeo.
  3. My dome memories............. The orange light above the clocks. If it was on and an Astro hit a home run, it was free beer time for a period of time. It happened a couple of times I was at a game with my Dad. I remember the stampede to the concession stand, and my Dad leaving me in a trail of dust while I sat in my seat. That promotion didn't last long. Demolition Derby - Joey Chitwood, Evel Knievel MotoCross Races Rolling Stones Astros/Oilers Rodeos OTC The yellow section cheap seats - most of the time The outfield cheap seats ($1) The blue section - once back in '97 The suites - a few times Astro Buddy games Dome Dogs Dome Foam Astronaut guys raking the dirt between innings Seeing Buff Stadium when it was still there Many others.......................
  4. I swam in the pool every time we went there. My burr haircut always attracted the horseflies right to my head. My Dad and Uncle and I would go fishing there as well. I Never caught anything, but it was fun. I always had a great time at the picnics. We lived in Gulf Meadows (Telehone & Fuqua) so we were a little closer, but it still seemed like a long way.
  5. Does anybody (besides me) have any recollection of Shellwood? It was on the corner of 518 and 528 in Friendswood, and was bascially a park for Shell employees. They always had their company picnics there. It was very wooded and had a pool, tennis and basketball courts, picnic tables, etc.... I always knew where it was, but my Mom's friend told me there was a subdivision where it once was (I never knew that it was bounded by 528). The "lake" is still there, and is located right off of the creek (Clear Creek perhaps?). I was wondering if anybody could share some memories of it.
  6. I saw a bunch of concerts there. ZZ Top, Frampton (got mugged afterwards), Aerosmith, Journey, Judas Priest, and many others. Most memorable was AC/DC (part of a three band lineup with BTO and Foghat if I recall), where Angus Young got on Bon Scott's shoulders during an extended guitar solo. Bon walked off stage and onto the floor. He then came up one of the aisles and proceeded to walk through the perimeter halls, while Angus shook his head back and forth, playing his guitar. I also remember going to the circus there as well. I also saw Toto in the Music Hall and when we got tickets, we just went when the concert was announced and got front row seats......only time that ever happened!
  7. I'll bite on this one. I had a Houston Post paper route back in '74-'75. My next door neighbor (the Mom) was a manager at the Dutch Kettle on Gulf Freeway (near Howard/Bellfort). My friend (the son) would help me do my route and afterwards we wnet over to DK and his mom would treat us to breakfast. My "usual" was a pecan waffle with blueberries..........mmmmmmmmmmm!!! Later on, I worked the graveyard shift on weekends at the DK on 59 (near Chimney Rosk/Gulfton). I bussed tables, and got my first glimpse of things yet to come............getting something to eat after clubbing. There were some characters to say the least, and years later, I became one of them!
  8. I went to that one several times. I can still remember the smell of those bugers cooking in the cozy little grill area.........yummy!
  9. My Mom and I moved to Alief in 1976 and I lived there until about 1982 and then again in '88 through '93. I saw alot of the growth in my time there. I attended Hastings and graduated in 1979. There was pretty much nothing from Sharpstown to Alief. It was like driving in the country. There were also a lot of dirt/gravel roads heading out towards Highway 6. It was quite peaceful in the 70'/80's as compared to the early 90's when you heard periodic gunshots. My how times have changed! At the time we moved out there, Wilcrest was dirt/gravel from Harwin(Alief-Clodine) to Westheimer. Westheimer pretty much ended as a paved road just past Wilcrest. The schools (Hastings & Elsik) were pretty much tame and very, very white. We still had truant officers back then, not school/campus police. I worked at the Minimax both at the old location at Belle Park and Bellaire (don't know what it is now) and the new location at Bellaire and Dairy-Ashford (possibly a furniture store now). Those were some good memories............if anybody wants to know anymore and I can answer it, I'll be happy too!
  10. That was A.J. High who worked for Trans Texas Airways/Texas International/Continental. I second the motion on the 1940 air terminal. It is truly a great place to take in an overload of nostalgia. I actually signed a waiver and went into the "off limits" areas with a volunteer. We ended up in the old tower.................if walls could talk!
  11. Man, you sure can crush a Braniff fan's groove!!!! Just kidding........they were actually "pastel" colors, with some being a "Panagra" variety, and are aptly referred to as Jellybeans. I used to love watching them land/takeoff at Hobby.
  12. I was 15 at the time, but I remember the news was tracking a lear jet with Howard Hughes on it. It was pretty low key from what I remember. The plane landed at Intercontinental and parked in a remote area, and according to a story I read had died enroute. After reporting his death, I don't recall there being any "Anna Nichol" coverage like there is today. My how things have changed.
  13. There is a Pizza Inn down in Dickinson (45 & 517).....it is so much better than Pizza Hut's thin cardbord-like pizza.
  14. They just opened one down in Pearland (288 & 518).........making a comeback perhaps?
  15. I mentioned this earlier in this thread, but there was a restaurant named Willie & Mike's Innovation on Westheimer. I believe it is close to where Texadelphia and Mama's are located. They had a costume/seating area theme, where the staff wore various costumes. I do remember there being waiters/waitresses dressed as cops and prisoners, etc..........Does anybody remember this place?
  16. Awesome thread. My grandparents lived in Oyster Creek, my dad & aunt went to Brazosport HS. I stayed many a time with them and have many fond memories. My granny would always take me to Antonelli's for a root beer float........YUMMY! I was down there a couple of times when something blew up at Dow (my grandfather's employer).......Thanks for this memory jogging thread!!
  17. I remember that day well. My Mom woke me up and said to look out the front door. I remember getting bundled up as fast as I could. We stayed out all day playing in the snow and only came in for a quick lunch.
  18. The only way around that was to call the operator and tell them it was an emegency, and most times they would cut into the line...............I actually never did that, but I had friends that did.
  19. I do believe you are right...........my Mom and I ate there quite often back in the late 60's/early 70's. My inlaws used to go there as well, way before they were my inlaws.
  20. I tried to send you an email but it said your box was full................I'll try again later.
  21. Small world. I had Mrs. Thompson in (3rd or 4th grade -- getting old -- memory loss!). She must be up there in age. Anyway, you have mail.
  22. I lived in Gulf Meadows until '73ish.............I assume you went to Mitchell??? I lived on Gulf Tree. Oh, the memories!!! I don't recall Paul Boesch living there, but I really didn't hear about it either.
  23. The "old" Monterey House enchiladas were so good. When you got them to go, the enchiladas (with finely chopped onions), rice and beans were in a round aluminum container, with cardboard top. That was placed in a cardboard box along with your candy and untensils. I think you got a few chips as well and some hot sauce in a packet. What I will never forget the smell of the box with the enchilada dinner in it. AWESOME!!!
  24. I saw some photos from one of my favorite sites "Abandoned & Little Known Airports".................here's the link with a lot of scoop on Sam Houston airport. members.tripod.com/airfields_freeman/TX/Airfields_TX_HoustonS.htm#samhouston You aren't crazy.......I saw it with my then 5 or 6 year old eyes. I don't think it was being used in the mid-60's though.
