  1. Seconded this. Nationwide phenomenon. Cheap houses in suburbs are generally "starter houses" which are not designed to be lived in, only used for a couple of years before discarded to the next. The initial group is always lower-middle income families with small children, and after that initial group leaves it's DOWN hill.As for locations, what was said before is spot on. If you're willing to put some sweat equity into a house, you could conceivably find what you're looking for. Then again, if you just want something shiny... perhaps a condo is the life for you.
  2. Legalize gambling, sure, but saddle casinos with the same sort of location restrictions that are often placed on adult businesses or convicted sex offenders. Not within X feet of school, church, daycare center, etcetera. Certainly gambling brings a negative element, but if a casino was built on some vacant industrial land near the east loop, would it really matter?
  3. Manhattan could easily fit inside the loop if it were made of play-dough, yes. As for actually fitting Manhattan into 610 - it might be possible, but only if Manhattan were laid diagonally with Inwood resting inside the SW corner (Post Oak/Braeswood) and the Battery resting near the northeast corner (highway 90). One way to check would be to cut out Manhattan from a large-scale topographic map, than overlay it on a same-scale map of H-town. This could be done digitally by downloading the images from TopoZone, but my graphics program (PBRUSH.EXE) lacks the power. Any volunteers?

    Whaddup?

Found a place, rented room in a 4bed2bath ranch just off the loop. Craigslist is my free locator service. Tapatia was as good as Greaser said; will return with female(s). No job yet; slacks go on tomorrow with paper-copy resumes in hand.

    Whaddup?

Hi all. Been lurking on HAIF for a couple of years now, been thinking about moving to Houston for about as long. Took the plunge and drove straight through last week. Showed up yesterday to the apt I had picked out a couple weeks prior and they told me I needed an additional $750 deposit. I told them thanks, but no thanks and walked off. Now in an extended stay place and I've got 6 days to find a pad before they charge me for another week. I've already dropped a bunch of craigslist responses (and will continue to until the staff here at the Westheimer/Montrose copy.com kick me out) but I figured I'd post here too. If any longtime members were thinking about renting out a room (preferably inside the loop, definitely inside BW8) I'm pretty much your ideal candidate, as I (i) have the cash in the bank and (ii) can participate in endless conversation/BS on topics ranging from art deco to traffic management. Also: I've already hit Ninfa's and some other restaurants, but can anyone recommend some walk-up taquerias that are dirt cheap and wicked good?
