I know what you mean. I lived in the Fondren Southwest area in the 80’s and drove through this area on the way to downtown and other destinations and remember what it was like. At the time, Fondren Southwest was relatively upscale, with young professionals in all the apartments and townhomes. Then the bust of the mid 80’s hit, and the apartments emptied out and many homes and townhomes went into foreclosure. That area has never fully recovered from the bust. I wish I had photos of the area from that time as well.

I’m not sure what their plans are for this building. They had surgical suites there until February, when they moved them to the new building.- 9 replies

That’s weird. They’ve been doing interior demo for a month or two. Perhaps this is a different phase of demo?- 78 replies

Hmmm, looks familiar, but I can’t place it. Anyone?

This is the original St Luke’s hospital building. I know Texas Children’s Hospital purchased the medical office tower seen behind this building, but I don’t know if they purchased the hospital complex as well.

Btw, this is a beautiful building and outdoor space. If only every new building project in Houston rose to this level of design and construction...

That’s such a shame. It was quite an elegant structure, even though it suffered from significant deferred maintenance.- 85 replies

Yes, I think the building is stunning overall. It is already visually striking from a distance. But I have also seen the building up close, from the same perspective as your photo, and the glass tubes appear clunky and inelegant to me. Perhaps I should reserve judgement until all the finishing touches are complete. For instance, I presume there will be some sort of cladding at the bottom of the tubes to conceal the metal framework.

This is going to be a gorgeous building. Hines really knows how to design and build quality properties, as opposed to the developer of the Travis (3300 Main).

I guess no one else is interested in playing this game. 🤔

Ah, ok, just east of the College of Architecture building (I can’t figure out how to embed the map). I could not find this listed as part of UH’s public art collection. Is it a student or faculty project?
-
Well, I have to admit I am stumped. I would guess that it is on the UH campus given the background and your bike route, but can’t find any evidence of this piece being a part of their collection.
