  1. I really hate this considering current TSA regulation. My bags are usually small enough to be carry-on but if I carry a bottle of wine for a frient, on my wife carries her contact solution (200ml minimal container) we are forced to check bags. And now - we have to pay???
  2. Have been there for happy-hour half-price oysters. Not bad. Other than that Goodes seafood is slightly better food a bit cheaper. But I like Danton's atmosphere better.
  3. I like Thai Sticks Restaurant, across the street from CVS on montrose. Danton's is Ok though I prefer Goodes Seafood.
  4. [sorry for off-topic remark] All these Starbucks talk reminded me of Peets coffee. If you guys are ever in CA or somewhere else they are having these - i highlye recommends stopping by. The coffees are so much better than SB and I think better priced. And their beens are roasted propertly not overburned as most of the ones in SB.
  5. There is a new Rice Master-plan that is suppose to turn campus main axis to be more in-line with Main st. The track field will be gone, there would be an alley leading to that building etc. But that's probably ain't gonna happen for another few years.link Architecturally-wise it is a compromise between Rice and TMC style, compromise between need of high-teck labs and the the consistent outside looks. Overall I feel it is not too bad. The inside plans are very cool.I don't think there is any plans to add floors later but there is a plan to add another "rectangular tower" to the round hub. However, this is going to be a commercial development (they are looking for investors) which will then lease this space to biotech/med-tech companies
  6. Are their any mex restaraunts with salsa-bar? The ones with 10+ different salsas customers can go and help themselves. I knew couple of places like that in NorCal and really enjoyed these. I also remember very positive experience with some small taquerias where spanish was the first language on the menu. Not too pretty - but the food was so goooood. I am arond Med Center so if you know of any - let me know.
  7. I will most likely stay in the Houston for 7-8 years or more. With time I think I would like to get 3bd single family home in nice neighborhood like WestU or Belair. However, what we'd want in the longer term 3-4 years from now is not what we need now. I believe 1-2bd condo/th is enough for us. 1bd are too hard to sell, so I am opting for 2 hoping to sell it without loosing money in about 3 years and upgrade for a single family home. Yes, I know they say you should not buy if not planning to stay there for 4-5 years. But it seems wasteful to buy property and pay interests and taxes from it considering that it is too big for you I have also been looking at Montrose area. It seems to be a nice area and the prices for condos are OK but.. WHY are the maitanance fees there are so big? $400/month for 2bd condo? And the photos of the grounds are not that impressive....
  8. Thanks for the links and the info. I am having a second thoughts about condo purchase.
  9. Dear HAIF members, I'll be relocating to Houston in December and still deciding whether purchasing or renting would be a good option. I am currently seeing a lot of townhouses/condos for sale around Holly Hall st area, east of Alameda. In particular I have been looking at Holly Hall Townhouses. The area seems to be very close to Medical center (my goal) and there is a shuttle service. Can any of the local share some insides about the area - how safe the areas is? Has condos in there appreciated or remain steady recently? Is the area generally going up or down in terms of new construction etc. Any other neighborhood around Medical center to consider in comparable price range? Thanks!
