DSW shoe warehouse...
Seriously? Please don't tease a girl.
-
All I know is more retail space. But no clue who is leasing.
There is activity in a corner spot of the new retail building. But I didn't get close enough to see a sign of the new tenant.
There is a Panda Express going up across the street in the Lowes parking lot.

Here comes the RDA tour!
I would love to hear everyone's thoughts on the mods on the tour. Either what you might know about them before or after you've seen them.
250 Pine Hollow Circle, 1953
Wilson, Morris & Crain, architects
The owner of this house talked at the lecture the other night. Her problems with flooding and the loss of land to the currents of the bayou over the years made my problems with noise from the street seem like nothing. She was a very entertaining speaker. I am looking forward to seeing this house. This link below shows a picture of the back of the house back when it was built. The owner said the house is still pretty original all things considered, because they have had to put their money into other things, like reclaiming the land from the bayou...

266 Pine Hollow Circle, 1972
P. M. Bolton Associates, architect
403 Westminster, 1960
Neuhaus and Taylor, architect
This house is newly restored, so I'm really looking forward to seeing it. I'm hoping they have some before pictures as well. I am a docent here on the early shift Saturday, so stop and say hi to the big smiling bald guy!
407 Thamer Circle, 1974
Raymond Brochstein, Anderson Todd, and William T. Cannady, architects

When is the tour? I didn't put it on my calendar. Is anyone planning to go? Anyone interested in a Houston Mod meeting to go together?

The price on our neighbor's house came down 10K. I went and saw it for an open house again yesterday. I really hope a mod inclined buyer gets it.
The Pros:
A long wall of glass panels along the back looking out to the backyard.
3 average sized bedrooms.
Lava Rock Courtyard I mentioned last month.
Cons:
Needs work on hardwoods.
Some noise issues.
Possible foundation issues.
Electrical is old.
A larger house was totally reworked next door and sold for $250K about a year ago. This house seems like a pretty good deal to me, but I don't know what all the hidden costs are. It definitely has good 50's mod tendencies.

You need to make sure that Realtor holds an open house the day of your Housewarming/Oscar Party.

I just started watching this show, Project Runway, and it looks like we have a Houstonian as a strong competitor on the show. Her name is Chloe Dao and she's the proprietress at Lot 8 in Rice Village.
I love this show and she is my pic to win, even before I realized where she is from. She is one of the few designers who is consistantly good and solid, if not outstanding.
I've seen Lot 8 but never stopped in. It strikes me as a place where the XL is a size 4.

I love country music, and I think the line up is boring. Seen it all before.
Maroon 5 may not be country but they were one of, if not the, most popular shows last year. They may not be country but they sold out first last year. With George there this year, I'm sure he'll sell out first.

From the 12-21 Pasadena Citizen:
Demolition permit issued for building
The Bank One building, looming 12-stories high over 1001 Southmore, has recently been the topic of much local discussion, following rumors that surfaced regarding the demolition of the icon....

I'm so sad. What a great building and landmark. Couldn't they at least save the great glass feature along the roof?

here is the "don't mess with texas" littering report a litterer site:
http://www.dontmesswithtexas.org/report_a_litterer.php
haha
Just reported another one. Why can't people keep their cigarette butts in their own car?
-
I'm a big anti-litter guy, Danax, so your efforts are really appreciated. The level of litter in Houston is unacceptable, and I think the level is as high because we don't do a good job of collecting it and then discouraging such actions in the future. People are lazy to begin with so you can't expect the overall population to not litter without there being a certain amount of outside motivation.
Those pics are great, too. Keep us posted.
I'm a big anti-litter person too. I regularly report litterers to TxDot's website. At least weekly I spot some jackass throwing a cig butt out their car window onto the ground. So I keep pen and paper handy to write down license plate numbers.
TxDot can't fine them, but they send a letter stating someone saw them litter blah, blah, blah. It's not much but reporting jackasses gives me joy for some reason.

Its gonna be a Hooters. . .
Well crap. Just what I didn't want, a chain restaurant that I don't even like. Stubbs Cycles will be happy, Hooters is known for organizing bike rides.

Surely by now someone has a clue to what the new buiding is Gulfgate. Anyone?
All I know is more retail space. But no clue who is leasing.
-
My issue with Pasadena Town Square are the stores, or lack of, in between those anchor stores.
-
I am positive that Gulfgate was before Northline, maybe by some 5-10 years.
Found this online -
"In 1956, Gulfgate Mall opened to great fanfare as the first enclosed mall in Texas."
First in Texas, not just Houston.
-
Sears was at the corner of Shaver and Southmore. It is now a Wal-Mart.
I believe the Globe store was east of the old Sears on Southmore on the south side of the street.
Correct, the Globe is now Mervyns. Across from the Foley's that is now a mall anchor. But back in the day, there was no mall in Pasadena. We just cruised Foley's. And they had a little music section that sold records.
-
This bank's picture used to be on my PISD Report Cards circa 1976.
Me too. It would be sad to see that building go. The mall behind it is in bad, bad shape.

I never went into a Sage, but I do remember they had ads on the paper bookcovers we had in school. They were like miniature billboards with short goofy phrases on them...can't think of one off hand. Maybe i can dig in my parents attic and find and rat chewed copy of one
Here's one of the slogans I remember from Sage billboards:
Rudolph shops at Sage, red knows (nose)
You know those billboards are one of the things I remember specifically from childhood that first got my interest in going into the advertising field.

When we went to Gulfgate Shopping Center back in the early 1960s, I remember going down some stairs to an underground bowling alley. I also remember my mother buying groceries in a Weingarten's store which was located at the end on the center next to Woodridge (I think that was the name of that side street). I can also remember going into a Newberry's store which was at the end of the center where a pedestrian bridge that traversed IH-610 from a movie theatre was.
Does anyone out there have any updated information on Gulfgate, such as if any of those old store from 40 years ago are still there or not?
Chet Cuccia
Check on the post on Gulfgate in the East End folder. Lots of great photos and stories of what was there and speculation on what they may be adding.

I do remember the diner/soda shop inside the Walgreens. I also remember the Ferrell's Ice Cream parlor in Almeda.
I'm really enjoying the all the pictures and the store listings. I live in the area now, but grew up in Pasadena before there was a mall there. So we shopped at Gulfgate & Almeda.
I really hope something positive happens in Almeda. My Civic Club president said she heard that Ed Wulfe was looking at it for a renovation similar to Meyerland/Gulfgate. I pray it's true. But I don't know where she got this information or if it's just hopeful thoughts on her part.
-
Theaters are long gone from Almeda. Almeda has also already lost the Old Navy, Lane Bryant, Just for Feet, and a book store just to start. Going soon I heard is the KB toy store in the mall and the JC Penneys (looking to move to Baybrook is what one of the employees told me). Most of the stores moved to the Fairmont/Beltway area in Pasadena.
And I doubt the future looks bright for the Foleys there since I can't imagine that Macy's is going to put their name on that location. Especially when there's the brand new nice Foley's in Baybrook.
-
But, Magic Johnson was looking for other locations in the houston area, and that might be one of the locations. He already have one location at Northline.
Well the neighborhood doesn't have a theater so it could use if if they could make room for it. I think the only place on Gulfgate property would be the space behind HEB. Almeda has tons of empty space and the new Walmart Supercenter going in. It's prime for redevelopement. And it needs it or the whole mall is going to close.
-
So, where they going to put the theater? Everything at Gulfgate is kinda bunch up.
I think the theater was just a suggestion of something nice for the neighborhood.
-
The Starbucks on Woodridge is part of Magic Johnson's project. I was surprised when it was going in (elated, but surprised). I go there once a week, usually after work, and I'm never alone when I'm in the drive through and there are usually several people sitting outside.
-
Well I heard they were going to put up an HPF storefront and a walmart supercenter. This new thing they are building has too small a footpring to be either... so I dont know yet... I will ask the construction werkers out there to fish for clues.
There's a Walmart Supercenter going up near Almeda.
I went by Gulfgate today and the signs around the new construction just say new retail space.
I really hope something useful goes in when they develop the empty land behind HEB.
-
Hopefully it`s not another bank!!! The rent in Gulfgate is high, so its not filling up real quickly. SOMEBODY, CAN WE PLEASE HAVE A 24HR FITNESS, OR ANY OTHER GYM IN GULFGATE.
I'm with you. But since 24-Hour Fitness just opened a new gyme at Almeda, I doubt they'd invest in another new building so close.
I guess Bally's would be the last hope for a large gym.
