  1. What about on Laurel Drive? There was a house that I knew quite well, on the corner (don't ask me which street was on the other corner) that had a glass room on the inside. That had to be an architectural marvel, but by whom?
  2. I LOVED hamburgers by gourmet!!!!!!! I don't know how many there were, but there was one in Greenway Plaza, and one on Richmond. Not too long ago, there was one on Park Place, it lasted about 5 minutes!
  3. I worked downtown off and on, the last time was for 4 years, 2000-2004. We lived in the tunnels. You get used to it, and the best places to eat - the best prices overall - are or were in the tunnel. I hate when a ton of people walk side by side in the tunnel. I also hate it when you are almost running in the tunnel, trying to keep up, and someone passes you anyway!
  4. Your grandfather was a very special man. He was very kind and caring. I was on his show more times than I can count from 1957 until at least 1967 if not later than that. I went to Beaumont to be on his show as well. I will be 51 on Thursday, and I have SO many good memories of him!!!!
  5. That street is River Drive, the street I grew up on. The bridge became a bridge for foot traffic only when I was 10 or so, but before that, we could drive on it to get to the Glenbrook Pool. There is another bridge over Sims Bayou to the golf course - for foot traffic and golf carts - but it is back on the bayou side.
  6. I remember that. There's also some on streets behind Park Place.
  7. Was that the same Mr. Boyd who owned a Texaco station on Park Place? Probably not, but just wondering.
  8. On Park Place Blvd., where the apartments are now, on the right side going towards Highway 3 (Old Galveston) were some real, honest to goodness mansions. My Mom and I had permission to go into one before it was torn down. It had a "Gone With the Wind" staircase, a ballroom, a HUGE swimming pool in the back, and a hugh yard. It was, at one time, palatial. Just wonder why someone didn't try to save these beautiful homes!!! Does anyone have any pictures of them?
  9. It would be strange it if was 6.....and that long ago. Maybe 4....but not 6.
  10. Funny, I don't remember it, not at all! Gulfgate, Meyerland, even the theaters at the Galleria - but not the Shamrock.
  11. There WAS a Busch gardens here before. Don't think they would come back!
  12. Wow - if WHITE CASTLE is better than Krystal - then, nope. Not going. Lived in St. Louis. Had White Castle. HATED White Castle. Ex-husband loved them so much, he celebrated his birthdays there. That's right - at WHITE CASTLE!
  13. Well....it's not really back. It is a bar now, or so the signs say, with a grill inside - burgers, chicken sandwiches, etc. It has opened, closed, opened, closed, changed names, closed, opened, renamed Dantes, closed, opened, closed...you get my drift. My Mom lives by it, we pass it everytime we go to her house - at least once a week. There was also a Big Boy on 45 South near Monroe - now Mannie's seafood. Big Humphrey's WAS on PArk Place, went there during high school - loved it! He's in Pearland, are we sure? He would have to be over 100 by now...
  14. Funny you should mention the commisary. It is now a fortune cookie factory (or it was the last time I went by there).
  15. The old Monterey House biuldings are still around - at least some of them. The ones that jump out at me are Alvin and Dickinson. They are my stores, and I know that they are over 30 years old. Casa Ole acquired Monterey House. It is not Monterey's Little Mexico. Food is GREAT.
  16. I attended there in the 1970's, and had heard that in the 1980's it was convereted either into a bar, a restaurant or condos. Anyone know for sure?
  17. Is this the one you can the chimneys see from the freeway - I45?the chimneys
  18. Strawberry Patch on Westheimer and Mason Jar. I don't know if there are ANY Mason Jars left - there was one in Clear Lake for a very short time. It has changed hands at least 4 times now.
  19. Well, I don't go to bars, but I will be glad to not have smoking in restaurants. I have asthma - raised with two smokers, so while we all should have rights, when your right to smoke hinders my right to breathe, I have a problem with that!
  20. I STILL miss Westbury Square - nothing like it in Houston since....
