  1. I haven't been around since Ike, I think, but anyway, I am glad that I re-visited this thread. I looked at the Google street level map and saw a lot of the old homes that I remembered and visited in on Laurel Drive. I found this site http://www.trulia.com/property-sitemap/TX/Houston/77021/Laurel_Drive/ to be extremely helpful to me. The last time I was on Laurel Drive, I thought that three of the most beautiful houses that I had ever seen were gone. They weren't. I might have been on the wrong block of Laurel. I saw them on the Google Map, then that website above told me the years they were built. There was only one built in the 1970's, the rest (what remain, they are not all there, unfortunately) are the original houses. With the exception of one, they sure looked bigger when I was a little girl!!!!!

  2. Wow, another Houston mystery solved! Tks Papi!

The pieces of memories puzzle slowly come together... :)

PS, how can we ever forget the carousel turning around in the center court of Almeda Mall? I am pretty sure it has been mentioned on Haif-a-rama.

My kids LOVED that thing. They literally cried when it was taken out.

  3. go tell that to all the children they have treated fool.....do they ask for tax money like loser "community organizers" do for "projects" in the same failed ghetto slums over and over....NO

have they taken money from you.....if not then it is none of your business.....you can go right down and join one and it will all be clear to you what they do and who they are.....much more clear than any "community organizer" type of scams that we are all forced to pay for through tax breaks and government grants that then disappear with ZERO accountability

I would put their record against any "community organizer" types any day of the week

Amen - I heard that they ARE coming back.

  4. Well, I worked downtown several different times. A couple of times in the 80's, when the tunnels weren't much, then for 4 years - 2000-04, and I loved the tunnels. If they get to you, you can go outside and walk in the traffic and construction and inhale the exhaust, grease and bums. One time I saw this poor homeless woman sitting next to what used to be Foley's. Someone had poured spaghetti and meat sauce all over her, and she was trying to eat it! It was terrible. Downtown is depressing. The tunnels aren't depressing, and the streets of Downtown ARE. It's that simple. I vote tunnels. Keep 'em coming. Allison was sad, though. Lost my good parking garage, and lots of my favorite businesses in the tunnels.

  5. HAIF is great, isn't it! I also wanted to be a cowgirl... And I loved Kitirik. I also recall the Late Show song, (when I was a little older), right before the TV stations stopped their broadcasting for the day.

    The Late Show

First the news and weather then the late show

    The greatest movies ever made

And you see them free, right on your own TV

You never need a ticket for the late show

Relax and just sit back and watch the late show

    The greatest movies ever made

    No need to far

You don't need to use the car

Or something close to that :)

  6. They had a very nice restaurant there. That's where I had my first Chef's Salad, when we thought anything called a salad had to be good for you. They remodeled the lobby and dining room to that beautiful two story building that was apparently torn down. Nice memories. We would go there every Sunday after church.

  7. Just wanted all to know we will be staying with my Mother. If things get bad, we may have a call chain from Crunch and Music to people northbound to try to find dry land!

Thanks all. Be safe. Stay dry. Pray if it's your thing. Send good thoughts if prayer isn't your thing. But know that there are oodles of people on this board thinking of all of you.

    God Bless You,

  8. Park Place is only a few exits off 45 from where we are. Part of it is right next to the bayou and most of it is low lying and flat with numerous large old assortment of trees. Our mom over in Broadmoor, is leaving along with sis in law to another family home in Beechnut/Cook Road area. Not sure if thats going to do any good but at least they are away from the areas near Gulfgate which are going to be closer to the worse section of EE near ship channel. I would hate to leave any senior citizen alone (sorry wngs I dont mean to add stress to the situation) but they tend to stress out even more. Mom had a stroke once and doctors say these kinds of events can be very hard on them. We are making damned sure she is taking all of her medicines with her. She will be with several others when it comes. Makes me feel a tad better. Sort of... but we are running out of time. -_-

Yes, we are running out of time, and we still haven't left yet. A lot of our neighbors aren't going, and we honestly can't decide what to do. We have reservations at a hotel in College Station, but then they said that they are expecting hurricane conditions on Saturday, as well.

  9. Friendswood/Clear Lake:

Most of my coworkers that live around the areas surrounding Baybrook Mall are not coming to work today. Most have already made reservations at inland Houston hotels/motels..

For those unfamiliar with the Baybrook Mall area, it is very low lying. Nearby Friendswood had a serious flood event a few years ago. Even Sagemont was ravaged quite badly.

I cannot believe people in Pasadena and South Houston are staying at home? Extremely low lying.

Pasadena! You need to chime in with latest word in your area!

Have your friends said how far out they are going?

  10. PARK PLACE - PapillionWyngs, has anyone contacted you yet who can be an emergency contact for your mother in Park Place? If not, or if y'all are evacuating to her house, will you let us know?

We were thinking about evacuating to her house, but it sits on Sims bayou. She says that she cannot leave, and I am really torn. Right now I am taking animals to the kennel, getting our medicines ready, trying to decide where we are going to go and how many cars to take. ( We are in 77059 - mandatory evacuation). If anyone has any advice, please, we need it. I hate to leave my mother like this.

    Thanks,

    Susan

Vertigo - how far out are your friends going?

  11. Clear Lake area. Not sure if we are staying or going, but concerned for my Mother, age 85 in Park Place area. Would appreciate someone checking on her if she stays - and since she is housebound, she is probably going to stay.

Could probably use help boarding up, don't even have a truck to carry the boards in, or a saw to saw them with.

    Thanks much.

  12. I remember Perry's being a meat market also ---- that was years and years before they became a very expensive, fine dining restaurant all over town. I used to go to the Perry's Meat Market in Friendswood and buy the apartment pack of meat - great quality and good prices. Those days are long gone...

They still have a meat market and grille on 518 close to 2351.

  13. Mr. Gatti's (their still around somewhere)

Showbiz Pizza (AKA Chuck E. Cheese)

    Del Taco (their still around!)

JoJo's (breakfast house...y'all know what I am talking about right?)

    Champs

What about Sander's BBQ on Park Place? Best everything in the world - and they were a meat market, too!
