The reality of bad things happening hit me, and others my age, with the bombing at Poe Elementary. I never felt "unsafe" exactly, but I did become aware that bad things can happen without warning, and for no apparent reason.

I disagree with the contention that Socialized Medicine won’t work in the US. Not only can it, it does work. I can attest to that.

I go to the VA clinic in Austin, and I have never had better care in my life. When I have an appointment, I am usually out the door within 30 minutes of my appointment time. In some cases, I get called early and I am gone even before my appointment time.

However, the services I receive are limited. They will do a coloscan test where you submit fecal samples, but they won’t do a colonoscopy. I have had kidney surgery twice to have large stones cut out, and I had my shattered wrist and torn rotator cuff repaired after a fall. Yet they won’t remove a planter’s wart from my toe.

I am relatively healthy, and I have had few special needs outside of the mentioned surgeries, so I don’t know what the limits of available care are.

But that’s the way I see Socialized Medicine – it should cover the basic care and emergencies, and focus mainly on preventive care. Things like organ transplants would have to be covered under private insurance.

The medical profession is out of control. Costs are prohibitive, and thus insurance premiums are outrageous. If the government is going to supplement insurance costs, then all they are doing is supporting high medical costs.

Instead of providing the insurance, why not provide the care instead. It would be a hellova lot more cost effective that way.

Mary Kay was one of many reknowned Reagan alumni. She would never tell her age, but she graduated with Racehorse Haynes, so it was easy to figure out.

I have a friend in Corpus I tried to find accommodations for here in Bastrop. They got a couple of rooms at Roadway Inn in Austin, so there are still rooms to be had in this area.

I am smart enough to know that there is no way to say for certain where the storm will come ashore, or where it will head afterward. I am not in a direct path at this time, but could get some pretty bad stuff before it

The Dean Goss Dinner Theater was the only "entertainment" oriented business I can recall.

Actually, there were quite a few entertainment oriented businesses that sprung up, in particular along South Main. However, I never had the slightest urge to stop and check them out, let alone pick any of them up.

Did anyone go to the Boy Scout Jamboree there?

Anybody know why that event was significent?

The very first event ever held in the Astrodome was a Boy Scouts Jamboree in (I think) February, even before the structure was completely finished, The Jamboree was a complete sellout, and most attendees went just to see the Dome, and many totally ignored the scouting part of the event.

I think Riggs (male cheuvenist pig as they called him)passed away a few years ago. That match was of great significance for the women's lib movement. I will attach for younger viewers.

I had never heard of Bobby Riggs before that match, and I too saw him as a loud-mouthed Chauvinistic pig. However, after all was said and done, I realized so much of his antics were just a part of his act. I think all along he hoped the event would be a shot in the arm for tennis, as well as for women
