  1. so swtsig said this one is only going to be 22 stories? That rendering appears to be more than that, but is that simply because the rendering hasn't been scaled down to 22 stories?
  2. has anybody seen the "other side" of this building? the one visible in most of the Houston skyline photos, like if you were driving down Memorial into downtown?
  3. How exactly did you make the logic leap from my post to assume that I would want city council to be making the design by committee decisions? Talk about a logic fail on your part.
  4. City Council should use this as leverage to get some better aesthetics on the building... Maybe a decorative crown or something. It's going to be a very visible, long lasting contribution to our skyline -- make it look better, please.
  5. So basically a lot of anecdotal evidence regarding xom. Ok thanks. Many times a corporate move is a way to cut dead weight. The top performers will be compensated to make it worth their while to stay
  6. I believe this post is directed at me. Two things: 1) Reading comprehension is important and seems to have eluded you. I said that Chevron missed the mark if this was their answer to XOM's campus, and that Chevron missed an opportunity to do something really cool that would get people talking. My point was that they could have built something eye-catching and innovative they could have really created a buzz. Their skyscraper, while fairly tall, won't stand out in the downtown skyline. They are building a 1.7M sq ft tower -- for perspective that is larger than Williams Tower in terms of sq ft. Why not build up to create a true titan of the skyline? Why build a box? Why use the same 30 year old glass concept simply for the sake of consistency? They could have done better. 2) Logic is also important. Using the metric of "pages on HAIF" is a weak metric that is not representative of oil company employees or the general public. You have a group of people on here who value interesting architecture and height. Yes, Chevron's tower hits on the latter, certainly much more than XOM's campus...therefore the page count difference on here. Again, I do like Chevron's commitment to downtown and the location is good for them, I simply believe they missed an opportunity to do something truly great. They gave us a mediocre effort that could have been better.
  7. A proposed Houston skyscraper is increasing its height? Is today opposite day? I'll take it! Wow
  8. true but they do have space for people in other buildings downtown that presumably they would free up
  9. not sure how you can make that claim when Devon built that beauty in OKC
  10. agreed. Love the crown on this one. It will make a great impression from anybody driving south on 59 approaching downtown
  11. I must have struck a nerve with you -- relax, champ. If your bar for success is good height, then you got it. If your definition of grand architecture is a box with the same glass used on the original 1400 Smith building 30 years ago, then you got it, too. by the way it's written "Chevron", just so you know but seriously, all in all I do commend Chevron for their commitment to downtown Houston, and their commitment to building a tall skyscraper. I just wish they had shown a bit more creativity on the design, that's all.
  12. Mister X - this is the same board that talked for pages upon pages regarding a McDonald's on post oak. So your bar is set too low there. I'll stop going on and on about it, but I view this as a disappointment.
  13. well, if this is "Chevron's answer" to the ExxonMobil campus, then I'd tell them they've missed the mark. They had a chance to do something really cool with this building that would get people talking, but they squandered it.
  14. I wonder how the design meeting went at HOK... 9am, Main conference room VP of design of HOK: "I'll bet you're curious why I've gathered you all here today for this meeting. Well, Chevron has decided to build the largest sq footage building in downtown Houston in the past 30 years. This will be a historic building that will make its mark on the fabulous Houston skyline. After much thought, I'm here to present you with the design. heads to unveil the rendering in the front of the room Here it is! After much thought, I've incorporated the exact same glass from the other two Chevron buildings, and we've fashioned it in a perfectly symmetrical BOX. One of our finest designs yet!" I'll put the bill in the mail to Chevron tomorrow. Total man hours worked from the HOK side: 1.5."
  15. wait -- is that just a big huge box? Is there ANYTHING interesting about this building, aside from the bottom? What an architectural failure if it's just a box. Anybody seen the other side? Is that the interesting side, by chance?
  16. Now that is a major improvement over what's there now. Is it confirmed that the building will be renovated, or is this just fantasy-land stuff?
  17. He's been doing this for years. It's quite refreshing to watch, actually!
  18. In one of the more hilarious google street view shots that I've seen, one resident provides his honest thoughts on this development. Please note the guy in the black tank top... https://maps.google.com/maps?q=2222+white+oak,+houston,+tx&ll=29.778421,-95.380232&spn=0.013018,0.026157&hnear=2222+White+Oak+Dr,+Houston,+Harris,+Texas+77009&gl=us&t=h&layer=c&cbll=29.779534,-95.381526&panoid=t6GlasiDO8xgIUfbT08Wnw&cbp=12,8.62,,0,3.32&z=16
  19. This building looks great, even though 10 story buildings aren't typically well received on this site since they're "short". ...and by the way -- can we learn to spell "ExxonMobil"? I understand you're an Aggie and that's probably asking a lot, though...
  20. When you say striking curvature, do you mean like A, B or C below: A. B. C.
  21. can you imagine living in a condo where you could hear people ordering in a McDonald's drive through line? I can't imagine it would be pleasant to hear fatties shouting at the speaker for their supersized fries and mcflurries all day
