  1. And it looked GREAT!! I was viewing it from the 14th story of The Greenway condo tower, and it really added a lot to that part of Uptown skyline. Can't wait for the Titan to hopefully provide some additional light. We need waaaaaay more nightime lighting on the buildings in this town!
  2. I love the design. In general, I love ornaments on the tops of buildings. Houston could use a few more spires, so this is a pretty fresh design for our town. I almost wish it were taller, though, to really highlight the spire on top. I wish this were the rendering for Hanover's 55 story tower at BLVD Place instead of this 25-30 story tower. Fantastic design
  3. Just went by the site, and the second crane is now up....so now there are two cranes on the site
  4. ^^ It would almost be like.....gasp...Victory in Dallas! They put those walls with lights around the electrical substation a couple of years ago. At least it somewhat hides it from the street level viewpoint. By the way - that was the crappiest setting on my camera - I didn't want it to take up too much space on the memory card!
  5. Just got the new Blackberry Curve and I am testing out the camera from my desk at work. Attached is my first photo: a picture of One Park Place, as viewed from the 30th floor of One Houston Center
  6. The exchange rate is currently 1.4 to 1, but your point is taken. I think it's more Latin Americas than euros, though...by a long shot
  7. ...it started in California and there are more locations in Austin that in College Station....yep, definitely an Aggie thing!
  8. As a Rice alum and somebody who spends a ton of time in the area, I have no desire to see this tower built. I'm all for the construction of most towers, but not those that are so completely out of character for the neighborhood. Not all towers are a good thing.
  9. The Hyatt dowtown is the tallest at 401 feet (30 stories). The Hilton Americas is 24 stories. The new ES will probably be just a touch shorter than the Hilton next door
  10. Looks like a great building, but I would prefer it not have the Embassy Suites logo at the top of it. That takes away from the look, in my opinion
  11. ...so we may be looking at something in the 500-600 foot range? Outstanding. Maybe they'll have a rotating beacon that moves in concert with Transco's!
  12. Wow. 55 stories.... That is awesome. This is going to be a tremendous addition to uptown. With the whole foods and the high end retail at BLVD place, we're really looking at something special. How many stories are the 4 leaf towers, or the huntingdon, by comparison? Just trying to get a feel for the height of this new tower
  13. I have an office in DT Houston and one in DT Dallas. I can say with complete confidence that DT Houston blows the pants off DT Dallas. DT Dallas lacks dining options, retail options, there are many fewer buildings, and it's dead at night. I believe there are more hotels there than in DT Houston, however. DT Houston has so much more to offer, such as the Toyota Center, Park Shops, MMP, plenty of restaurants, etc. Now, if you include uptown Dallas, it's another story, but uptown Dallas is not walkable from DT Dallas and I don't see why you would include that area in the discussion.
  14. It's a two story structure painted a beige-pink color. No windows. Hideous. Glad to see it getting torn down. I would think that block would be the most valuable one surrounding Discovery Green, given its proximity to everything around there edit: for those following the "excitement" at the site, all the firetrucks are gone, and the earth mover has moved to another part of the building, but hasn't started wrecking anything else. The machine is emitting a white smoke right now, though!
  15. Yes, the gas leak makes sense. The bulldozer likely just hit a gas pipe or something. There doesn't seem to be any sense of urgency amongst the firemen on site. I can see where a gas leak next to an electrical substation could be cause for concern! Sorry Jax, I don't have a camera. The scene just has the banquet center with half of one side torn off, an earth moving machine that is not currently doing anything, 2 firetrucks and an ambulance.
  16. Wow. This is unbelievable. I noticed the bulldozer thingy stopped working about 5 mins ago and now an ambulance and fire truck just showed up at the scene. I wonder if they hit some homeless people in there or something.
  17. So I'm staring out my office window on the 30th floor of One Houston Center, watching the progress on One Park Place (the condo tower in front of Discovery Green), when I notice a bulldozer with the arm extension (not sure the official name of this machine...) roll over to the banquet center that is next to the electrical substation and cater-cornered from the Hilton and One Park Place. This is on the south "curved road" part of Discovery Green. It just started tearing the building down. It's making good progress, as they are half way through one of the sides of the thing, and it's only been about 10 minutes of work. Anybody know what they plan on doing with this block? It would be ripe for development, given its proximity to the new park, the new condo tower, the hotel, Pavilions, 4 Seasons, etc...
  18. Looks awesome. Hopefully that top part will light up at night It almost looks like a periscope sticking up out of a submarine. ...and by the way, where did the other story go? Down to 46?!??
  19. glad to see beautiful Rice campus expanding. Doing it green is even better. gotta receive the green ($30M) to build it green Not to boast, but my alma mater has such a nice campus
  20. If you're going to head over to UH, don't forget your bulletproof vest. The 3rd Ward isn't a pleasant place to stroll around in. Sincerely, Rice fan
  21. by the way, the joke amongst Rice folks is that for their expansion plans for the building, they will add another cylindrical structure, symmetrical with the existing one. Should be a great aerial shot...
  22. As a Rice alumnus, I can safely say that I speak for a large number of us who think that this building looks like complete trash. Rice has a fairly uniform Mediterranean style about its buildings, and not only does this new building not match it, but it is painful to even look at. The building's only redeeming virtue is that it is not physically located in the main part of Rice's campus, but instead across University blvd and away from what is really considered to be "Rice". I have emailed the project manager on this thing voicing my (and many others') displeasure about the look of this, and she didn't bother to reply. This building is an example of architectural group-think at its finest. I'm really pissed about the whole thing.
  23. As a midtown resident, I am sick and tired of all the bums and indigents roaming around asking for money. Between that Greyhound station and the 4th ward people providing a plentiful supply of "roamers", the area is mess. Within seconds of even setting foot on the Chevron property at Smith/Hadley/Louisiana, I get asked for money....every single time I go there, day or night. It's absurd. I've started taking a more confrontational approach with them that seems to shut them up at least when I leave the store. Just yesterday morning I left my apartment at 6:30am, and upon exiting the gate, I nearly tripped over a bum who was sleeping there. I told him, "good morning!", and he lifted his legs up so I could pass by. $1400 a month for a one-bedroom apt and I'm tripping over bums leaving the place. Adding a "transitional center" for former inmates is a complete and utter failure for whoever is planning midtown's growth - if anybody is even bothering. Get rid of the Greyhound station, quit adding additional former inmates to the area and we might start making some progress. I have previously lived in uptown Dallas, and believe me, this crap would not be tolerated there. Midtown Houston is a COMPLETE failure compared to uptown Dallas, and this is coming from somebody who has lived in Midtown for 5 years and who badly wants to see it succeed. I'm getting the hell out of Midtown as soon as my lease runs up (which I stupidly renewed for another 9 months...).
  24. I love it when the UH folk attempt to run smack at Rice. We completely own you in your best sport (baseball) and continue to beat you at least once each year in basketball, despite your delusional hopes at a shot at the NCAA tournament under your new coach Tom Penders. You do have a whopping one game winning streak against us in football, so congrats. Almost every other sport Rice owns you.
  25. OTC - do you post on the Rice sports message board? That's where that graphic is from!
