April, May and June Walking Tours will be held on the fourth Sunday of the month as previously scheduled. Upcoming tours are:
Sunday, April 24 ? To Be Announced
Sunday, May 22 (National Preservation Month) - Old Sixth Ward

Contacts are God. In the last 8 years I've held 4 jobs, all in the same market, all for over 50k and never once used a resume. Not that I didnt have one, I mean they have to put something in your file after they hire you.
Most of my contacts came from university. Either professors or fellow grad students.

You're welcome. Sometimes I feel like I'm not doing enough, so this afternoon, I'm going to take some trashbags out of the dumster of my apartment complex and drive up & down the inner-loop dumping all the garbage I can. That way all you inner-loop snobs don't feel left out.
I think later I might go kitten-killing. Any takers?
I guess if we all (5.1 million metro) lived inside the loop, the world would be a better place, right? Then the total undeveloped green space in the US could rise from its current 90+ percent to maybe 90.001+ percent. Wheeeeew, now greenpeace can park their pollution spewing, rally-transport buses & vans, and call it a day.
I guess though I could live inside the loop, and on my salary, live in the ghetto. But I guess thats what I deserve for not going to college and getting a needless corporate white collar job filing papers or developing software that electronically files papers.
I love sprawl. I want to eat it with a spoon.
OMG LOL!!
You sprawl-monger. You and your minions be damned to hell.. wait youve already sentenced yourself to hell... which happens to be only 3.4 miles from heaven.. which is where I live.

ok ok ... you guys forced me and I went to Berryhills and had the tamales for lunch. I agree they were very good. About on par with the fresh homemade one's one of my coworkers used to make around christmas time.
The sauce that came with them was delish.

Chuy's seems to be a real fan favorite. I have never undertood why. I admit to loving the Creamy Jalepeno sauce, but I have never been wowed by anything else on the menu. With that said I lived with 2 dudes I went to college with a few years back. Both were from Colorado and both thought Chuy's was the greatest resturant in Houston (Mexican or otherwise). I just do not get it.
In college most of my friends were vegetarians and they all loved the place. Maybe they dont use lard in there beans? I don't know, other than that elvis chicken thing nothing really rocked my world... I do remember what they all ordered... The Chuy's Veggy Special with Deluxe Verde Sauce.
-
mmm oh yeah Chuy's... I like the (non-mexican) Elvis Fried Chicken. What can beat a chicken breast battered in crushed lays potato chips, fried, and smothered in queso.
We always called it the "Defib Special".

I like 11th Street Cafe and Buffalo Grill. Baba Yega's has a great sunday brunch (get there early).

we frequently have family gatherings at patrenella's - it's located on jackson hill just off memorial. it's got a great homestyle atmosphere and a lot of houston history. it's truly an authentic italian place, family owned and operated. my dad went to st. thomas high school with the owner - sadly, his wife recently passed away. their hours are kinda funny (closed on sunday, open at 5pm on saturday)and you might drive right by the place since it's a house, but if you've never been there it is a must try.

Which Patranella brother is it? I bartended for Frank Patranella for many years down in Galveston when he used to run Trumpets on the Strand for the Mitchell family.
-
A funny aside. I was a teenager visiting my brother in LA and we went to a nice mexican restaurant. I ordered Chili Con Queso and they brought me a bowl with some Jalapenos and half a block of cheddar.

Actually some of the worst temprament (sp?) dogs are the ones everyone thinks are cute and docile.. like Dalmations and Cocker Spaniels.

When I was a kid growing up in Redding California.. the train is how I got into downtown.. or even to the mall. We had lots of train traffic coming through and I knew I could make it no problem if it was going about 20 mph or slower. Very stupid on my part. I knew a kid that lost his legs when I was 9.

All I've heard about T'afia is that its Pope's new place that focuses on a healthy menu. The person taking me is a vegetarian and she considers this place the pentultimate venue for her. Although I think it looks pretty damn meat friendly.
Sample dinner menu:
seasonal soup: curried eggplant
organic field greens, texas tarragon vinaigrette, roasted nuts & quince coulis
beet, orange & grapefruit salad, candied walnut, nut oil
texas honeycomb, thyme & feta
spiced farro, pinenut & pear salad
red edive, roquefort, smoked pecan & white truffle-lemon dressing
seasonal cheese pairing: capri white buck goat & pickled whole cherrries
organic carrot-red miso broth, tofu skins, spinach, shitakes, edamame
lavender duck & black mission fig salad with goat cheese
seared tuna steak, kaffir lime leaf-coconut broth, soba
pistachio crusted salmon, curried spinach salad, mandarin orange vinaigrette
crisp, flat chicken, golden romanos, celery leaf salsa verde
two texas cross quail, red quinoa & french couscous, pistachio aillade
braised & grilled rabbit, 3 bean stew, cumin butter
smoky venison t-bone, sweet potato puree, buttermilk grit sauce & cherry balsamic
niman ranch roast sirloin, cheddar custard, bordelaise

Hehe, I eat at the Amazon on Gessner about twice a week. Its right across the street from my office building. It came highly anticipated.
-
T'afia is great.
Hitting T'afia for the first time on friday. Can't wait.
-
If I'm looking for steak I go to Ruth Chris or Churascos. Although I've heard that Spencers in the Hilton Americas was great.
-
Yeah West Gray and Dunlavy for Romano's.

I'll tell you what Fajita Flats is good for.... Those long margarita lunches where you just never quite make it back to work. Did that for two years... but it was ok I was with my boss.
That place does get crazy. Watch out for womens birthdays... the waiters do some funky stuff. I think I blushed.
