  1. John Avil (El Burro & the Bull Restaurant Group) and Monica Pope (Beavers, T'Afia) are partnering on the Telegram Tea Room at 2601 Baylor.

    (via Culturemap)

"Two veteran restaurateurs are bringing a new neighborhood cafe to The Heights that will serve as a new home for one of Houston’s most venerable chefs. Veronica and John Avila will open the Telegram Tea Room later this year in partnership with Monica Pope.

Similar to Henderson & Kane, the Avilas’ modern general store in the Old Sixth Ward, the Telegram Tea Room will serve locally roasted coffee by Little Dreamer Coffee and pastries by Somos Semillas in the morning with a light lunch menu and a selection of retail products such as milk, eggs, beer, and wine. Where the Telegram Tea Room will set itself apart is a dinner menu by Pope, the chef who led bringing the farm to table movement to Houston."

  2. Two new spots coming to 19th Street:

    1) Indian Restaurant in the new building next to the Ka/Hugs&Donuts/Fat Cat strip center:

    2) Bar in the old La Pachanga location at 1235 W 19th.  They have already started on the remodel of the old bar.

  3. I noticed a TABC Application Notice on a recently closed used car lot at Shepherd and 15th St.  Not that I care, but I thought this area was within the "dry" boundary.

The name is "Heights Beer Garden."  Its the orange building on the southwest corner, across from the Tortilla factory.

Incidentally, I've noticed a number of the used car lots up and down Durham and Shepherd have closed recently.

  4. Seriously??? All of this is ONE person, not people, complaining. EVERYONE I have talked with in the neighborhood is excited and ready for Hubcap to open, they are not trying to stand in the way at all. "@Hubcap_Grill Ricky Craig" needs to get over it and open already! All of this childish drama is beginning to turn-off those of us who are excited about a new, cool place to eat and hang out.

Maybe it is just one person, but with the fight and fuss the civic club put up against La Hacienda on 26th and Couch I wasn't sure.

Looks like the actual location is the old Mi Cocina Victor's Cafe:

  5. More from @hubcap_grill

    @Hubcap_Grill Ricky Craig

"It's ridiculous! Some peeps in the heights are trying to stop me ( Hubcap ) from opening. I'm not WalMart. Geez"

Here we have a local business interested in investing in the Heights/Shady Acres area in a down economy and people are jumping to conclusions. Maybe we can get really lucky and get a Red Robin or a Fuddruckers.

For instance from the Shady Acres Discussion Group:

    My link

"Live bands? I don't think i am ok with this. Will the civic club work

with the owners to ensure the residents interests are being voiced?"

  6. Last night, Hubcap Grill announced on its twitter feed:

"Coming soon to the Heights. Hubcap Burgers and Beer Garden. Live bands on weekends ( classic Texas rock ) Texas beers"

A number of the feeds followers wanted details, but the owner said he'd announce on Monday.

    But...about an hour ago:

"It's official: @hubcap_grill just signed lease for a space on 19th St. in the Heights near Cedar Creek. Hubcap Burgers & Beer Garden. Woohoo!"

Any one care to speculate as to where on 19th. This sounds like an interesting addition to the neighborhood. Their burgers are considered some of the best in town. Last night, he stated it would be open in two months.

  7. Houston Business Journal

    From the article:

"EatZi's Market & Bakery was expected to close its doors at 6 p.m. on Nov. 16.

The shelves at the bakery were nearly empty by Thursday afternoon and several employees at the store confirmed they were notified that the store was to be shuttered at the end of the business day.

Store employees have informed customers that all future orders, including Thanksgiving orders, will not be filled.

In fact, The Houston Business Journal had an order for an event next week and was informed today that the store was closing."

    ------------------------------

I've noticed that Eatzi's quality and selection has slipped some the past few times I've gone, but I was not expecting this. They always did crazy business at lunch and a solid dinner take-out. Plus, I've been to plenty of holiday parties where the host just stocked up at Eatzi's.

  8. Not sure if this has already been mentioned, but has anyone contacted or heard from Landmark's Corporate Office? I may be mistaken, but I believe Landmark is co-owned by that Maverick in Dallas, Mark Cuban.

I remember reading that Cuban goal was to convert all Landmark Cinemas to a Digital Format. I don't know anything about cinema technology, but the RO Theater may not be very open to this type of change. The battle to save this great theater may need to include petitions and such to Landmark expressing our concerns.
