  1. I want to know what they're going to do to repair it? Is it just going to end up being janky a week after they "fix" it, or is it going to be made to actually last?
  2. I couldn't agree more. Something that should be a major feature of the city just looks like a massive embarrassment. It bums me out every time I drive down 59 at night, they just look so janky. If the Montrose Management District still existed, I'd say they should sue for their money back from the company that installed them. They worked for barely a week after the Super Bowl, and then barely a week again after what seemed like a push to fix them a few months later. Some of the bridges have literally one or two working lights left on them.
  3. Correcting myself - it does in fact look like only the front section of the building (where parking would go) has had the roof removed.
  4. I didn't look too closely when I walked by it yesterday, but it looked like the entire roof was gone. I could be wrong.
  5. Certainly not every single building, but this one has a great canvas AND it's ugly as-is. So I think it's a prime candidate.
  6. There's something that always rubs me the wrong way about business owners complaining about stuff on social media.
  7. Generally I think painting brick is kind of a sin, but this place could really use it. With all the various patch jobs on it, it looks pretty janky. I also think they'd be missing a huge opportunity if they didn't use that huge expanse of brick wall fronting Emancipation for an EaDo-worthy mural. Could define the neighborhood.
  8. Eh, it may be a little silly but these are definitely the going rates for this type of barber shop these days. I've been to several in the city - Cutthroat, East End, Bison, Argyle - and these prices are pretty standard. It's definitely a luxury.
  9. Now that the cladding is off, I'm even more confused how that building becomes what's in the renders.
  10. Under the current plan, St. Emanuel and everything east of it stays. So this building would essentially front the freeway and stare directly at the flyovers where 45 comes up from the south and dives down to join 228/59 underground.
  11. I'm not really sure what all "operating" entails, but taking Renfe all around Spain a couple years a go, I couldn't have been more impressed. If TCR is anything like that, I'd be over the moon.
  12. Something about the windows at this building seems to be plaguing them. I can't tell you how many times I've seen windows installed, uninstalled, changed, boarded up, changed again, replaced with grating. They're out there working on them again today.
  13. Eh, I really don't see the problem tbh. The train tracks as a division between "official" EaDo and "official" East End has always seemed kinda arbitrary to me. East End has history that shouldn't be bulldozed over, but this upper Navigation/Canal area feels much more of a piece with EaDo than, say, anything east of Sampson. The names have exact meanings to the management districts, but I don't see why they need to for cultural purposes
  14. If in fact those people do exist, that's just not a compelling argument for me. A few hundred or a thousand people hamstringing a process that could make life better for hundreds of thousands or a million, not to mention the environment... that just reads as selfish. I'm not asking them to be thrilled about it, and I'm not saying that some of them won't be net losers in all of this (I think the business owners along I-45 stand to lose more in the long term than the landowners along the route). I just really chafe at the idea that anyone should wield wildly outsize influence like that. Especially when we're talking about people whose land is there only by luck of the draw.
  15. I wish we could just throw some chlorine in Buffalo Bayou 😭
  16. Personally, I like the diagonal lines, and I think they make a more distinct silhouette for the skyline. It kind of reminds me of Frost Bank Tower in Austin without being too much like it. Especially once it lights up. My only real complaint is that I wish it were taller.
