HEB in Buffalo Heights and Bellaire are multistory with parking in an adjacent garage and underground, respectively.

My memory may be wrong, but both of those are just single-story for the actual retail portion, right? I was thinking more like multiple floors for retail, multiple floors for parking. Keep the footprint as small as possible. But I was mostly reacting to the person saying that the Olshan site was not large enough for even a small HEB, but maybe that's not true if you're not doing surface parking.

According to all of the compact city urban planner "experts" I've been reading lately, you don't really want an HEB there, as even the small HEB's are too large. You want something like an average German ReWe store of 10,000 sq ft and limited selection of stuff you don't like, but is all good for you. No parking, because everyone loves to walk when they live in an urban area. Bwahahaha.

Is it not possible to build a multi-story HEB...

I mean, seriously, I've never seen one but there's no reason why they couldn't stack multiple floors of parking and retail. Is there a *truly* walkable HEB anywhere in the city?

  3. This would be really stupid, but if Texas Central loses the suit, what would keep them from building a two-stop service on a portion of the line they already own, selling one ticket, and officially becoming an "operating railroad"?

  4. My understanding (as a tenant of Common Desk on the second floor) is that the 4th and 5th floors are intended to be majority, though not entirely, leased to Microsoft and a Chevron green energy accelerator. And it's more about those companies not being in any hurry to get back to in-person office work yet. Hopefully that delay isn't an indefinite one, but my understanding was that it's just the expected slowness that comes with getting anything moving during Covid. I could be misinformed, but I feel like that's what I've heard.

My parents and I always said 609 Main was Houston’s version of London’s Shard building

I guess I've never seen it like this... to each their own. For me, 609 Main has always been a good building, but certainly nothing iconic or noteworthy. The closest this city gets to something iconic for me is 700 Louisiana.

  6. The article doesn't specifically mention this isn't the case, but why would you not open the line after a few stops are done and expand service incrementally? If they're really waiting for the whole thing to be done in 2028, that's stupid.

  7. Maybe this isn't quite the right forum for this, but does anyone have any recommendations for flight schools in the Houston area? I've gotten interested in pursuing a PPL and would love to hear if any others have first-hand experience.

  8. As part of a project I've had banging around in my mind recently, I'm interested in others' thoughts about what Houston means to them. Specifically, when you think of Houston what are some of the first things that come to mind?

What makes Houston different from any other major city? What, if anything, really symbolizes Houston for you?

More than anything, you think of Houston as the ______ city?

Really interested to hear everyone's perspectives!

  9. Got around to trying this place for lunch today. I'd mostly echo what @wilcal said - perfectly happy with the food, but also not blown away. The space is BEAUTIFUL (especially outside) and I think there's a ton of potential here. The brisket and sausage were both solid; I thought the pork ribs were a lot less tender than they could have been, but the flavor was there. Overall I'd say a good 7/10, and I'm excited to see where they take this place. What it lacks in not being Pinkerton's, it makes up in being way closer than Pinkerton's, lol.

Hoping this is simply quick politics to have gone on record for delaying vote... I recently started working out of the Ion and it is bustling with energy from VCs, startups, several large energy companies, highly programmed networking and academic events, tons of visitors, etc.  Also Greentown Labs is near or at capacity and there is spillover from there to here already taking place...  the moment these investments are approved, Phase I is likely ready to be announced.

Could be wrong, but don't think I am... hopefully this is only a short pause.  Serious momentum underway.

I also work out of the Ion now - maybe we've met each other. Are you at Common Desk?

that fireplace looks like a dead snow leopard.

for townhome layouts, this one doesn't actually suck. having the living/dining/kitchen on the first floor makes so much sense compared to having 1 random BR on the first floor, then LR/DR/K on the second floor, followed by the 3rd floor with the main BR, and an 3rd BR. it needs a larger footprint for the common areas to be on the first floor with a garage and not feel cramped, which is probably why they are a premium price.

Certainly my situation is not everyone's situation, but this townhome layout works perfectly for me. I'm able to rent out the first-floor bedroom, my roommate and I have privacy being separated by a floor, but can congregate in the middle when we're feeling social.

Because all Landry's projects are exactly the same?

    Downtown Aquarium

    Downtown Westin Hotel/Vic & Anthony's

    The Post Oak

    Kemah Boardwalk

    Galveston Pleasure Pier

    San Luis Resort

I didn't say they were all the same. I don't personally think any one of those things is a fit for the East End.
