At some point I wouldn't be surprised to see them put in a HAWK pedestrian crossing somewhere.

There already is one shortly before Wheeler. It's what I currently have to use. As a pedestrian I can tell you it does very little to inspire confidence. HAWK signals are pretty horrible from an information design perspective. Most drivers are only sort of tangentially aware of what they're really supposed to do with them and I've watched people speed through them countless times.

The placement of that HAWK also causes a bunch of problems as it often conflicts with traffic backed up at the Wheeler light, and together with the fact that parking is allowed on Fannin, turns that whole area into a visibility nightmare.

  2. As someone who works at Ion, the only part about this sucks and appears to have no planned solution - walking from the parking garage to Ion in the rain. It's a problem with the current temp lot, and the garage will be even a block farther away. It also sucks having to cross a busy Fannin twice a day at rush hour. I get there will be a whole campus this garage is servicing, but having it so inconveniently located to your flagship building is kind of a bummer.

Ah well, at least now that things are starting to cool down a bit I can go back to biking.

  3. My experience with Hobby has felt worse each time I've flown out of it recently (which I do ~10-15 times a year). I'm sure some of it is pandemic staffing etc, but the food options are meager and for anything take-and-go that isn't Subway, you'll be waiting 20 minutes to get something. And then you won't be able to find space at a table. I've mostly stopped trying to eat at Hobby at all. Additionally, with every gate servicing a flight round the clock, there's almost never enough places to sit while you wait for your flight.

I will give them that their operations are always extremely smooth, usually very on time, and getting around the airport isn't hard. But the experience of the time spent there is less than stellar and desperately in need of upgrade.

  4. I wonder if that means building out the route between Dallas and Fort Worth first to start generating revenue while it then gets extended down to Houston. Not a bad idea, but just puts it even farther in the future.

  5. Tangentially related, but I've been really frustrated with the EaDo Management District. I've been interested in listening in on board meetings and potentially getting involved. I've called and emailed multiple times for information, but they always say they'll follow up and then never do. The website is always out of date. I even offered to help run the website for free (this is what I do for a living) and they said they'd follow up and then never did. I was able to virtually attend one meeting a long time ago and that's all the luck I've had.

Is anyone else involved or go to/listen in on these meetings?

No idea. I heard this from my boyfriend in insurance so there’s literally zero way to verify his statements. What he said is it sounds like it because it was so successful they’re trying to partially revive it? Not sure if it would be a new concept or similar. Feels like bad juju to reopen as is.

FWIW, I've also heard this through a grapevine... which may if traced back far enough be the same grapevine as yours, who knows. Also FWIW, Bobby denies it.

If you don't think he's being disingenuous, that's your belief, and you're free to believe that. Nobody's going to tell you not to. Don't attempt to tell anybody else how to feel either.

Imo, judging someone to be disingenuous requires a much greater familiarity with a person and their beliefs than you're going to get on an internet forum. Automatically tacking anyone online who disagrees with you as disingenuous is, at best, a very weak position to argue from. If your position is strong, then take them at their word and debate the merits aboveboard. It's incredibly short-sighted to assume that others cannot possibly genuinely care about something that you yourself do not.

I'm not excited about the Third Ward Signature Bridges.  They look very much like the ones over the existing trenched portion of the Southwest Freeway.  And I expect them to be maintained just as carefully.  Meaning, not at all.

That set of bridges used to be a spectacular asset to the city.  Now they're an embarrassment.

Couldn't possibly agree more. It's horrible.

Are homeless people still a problem in the area? Compared to 3-4 years ago.

I mean it certainly hasn't been transformed overnight, but every year you see fewer and fewer homeless people in the area, I think. "Problem"? I don't think I can say it was ever really that disruptive to me, except for maybe trying to get donuts at that Shipley or something. But no, in the immediate vicinity of Ion it's not so much of an issue now.

The prototyping lab sounds cool. I wish I could come take the tour.

I just wandered in there a couple weeks ago and someone was happy to give me a tour, you may be able to do the same. It's on the first floor off the public area, so you shouldn't have any problem getting to it.
