  1. wow.. the ballet must have some coin!.. Are they a non-profit who gets tax exemptions? If so that would at least save 40% off the bottom line..
  2. That place came with a warranty, right?
  3. We've had the various date-night dinner there, as well as the occasional professional organization Christmas party there.. We'd make it about once a year for a treat.. Wonder if there is interest in opening in a different location? (Heights maybe? )
  4. Looks like there will be more townhomes/apartments coming.. I always enjoyed a fine evening at Vino Bistro.. I'm very sad to see it close. http://swamplot.com/bistro-vino-the-honeym...ver/2008-07-17/ http://www.bistrovino.net/
  5. well.. sorta.. I just don't want more of my money being thrown away on lost causes and human debris who will exist anyway.. if you feel philanthropic enough to donate/give/whatever your money.. that's fine by me.. just don't waste mine.
  6. naaa.. those kids are supposed to take Metro down there!
  7. Ah.. I apologize... I'll fix my previous post and say there is nothing larger than a 3 story building in that same area. This makes all the difference, I'll now accept a 11+ story tower in the middle of da hood..
  8. I think the argument that an 11+ story building would not stand out much if there are already 3-4 story townhomes in the area..
  9. I don't recall any townhomes on that street being 3 story.. much less townhomes at all! On 7th - 7 1/2 streets there are some single family houses which are 3 story.. but the closest 3 story townhomes I can think of are up near 14th and heights.. (brownstones) but I don't think any residential or commercial on White oak are larger than 2 stories.. I may have to look again.. Edit: There are indeed 3 story townhomes in the area.. I'm now willing to accept a 11+ story building in the same area.
  10. I don't think I got anything in the mail for my consideration... As well thought out as this may or may not be, having a midrise on white oak is is honestly going to stick out poorly. There are no other buildings around this area more than 3 stories. This is not exactly a "commercial district" either. Yes, there are mostly businesses directly fronted on white oak, but they butt up against residences in the rear. I don't know how tall the Lancaster is, but the Plaza on Montrose was built in 1920 as a hotel and is some 11 stories. The neighborhood eventually built in around it, not the other way around. Plus there are many other multi story complexes around it. I'll reiterate: this project, if the Heights was the targeted demographic and area, would be much better suited for 19th-24th.. I do see a Ashby-style fight going on here. I'd suggest scale back, or move to another location. Thanks --- Edit: Yes. there are 3 story buildings.. this changes everything
  11. I think the thing about the areas of 19th st to 24th and Yale or so already have the assisted living/hospitals/hospices/office buildings which are multi-floor buildings. I would not and don't have a problem with a 6 story building there.. Now around White Oak.. this is pretty much smack dab in the middle of a neighbourhood.. play nice or go home. This place would stand out like buck teeth.. Let's hope this is just for illustrative purposes and not a real project.
  12. I hope they don't tear it down/close it.. I just got a membership there!
  13. Yeah.. I saw that yesterday while walking to Onion Creek.. I sure hope they'll leave it open to pedestrian traffic.. Maybe the fence is to keep kids with cars out so they're not muddin' in the track..
  14. While some of these comments were probably in jest.. there is only so much tolerance to go around.. and I've run out.. There have been bums/vagrants/hobos/human debris since the beginning of time.. No amount of compassion is going rid them of their lifestyle or habits.. or mental disease.. Compassion to me is defined as to help someone get out of a situation where they no longer need handouts.. Giving a hobo a buck for a drink or a cig does not get them out of their sitation, it prolongs it. Shelters which provide good and/or sleep with no job training does not get them out of their situation, it prolongs it. Then you have the change the attitudes of those who don't want help.. that is.. to be indepenent of hand-outs.. And this is the hardest part becuase you can't change someone who doesn't want to change.. (BELIEVE IN CHANGE!! WOO!! /sarc..) So I will not give a buck to those who do not want to help themselves..If you don't want to help yourself, then you are not a productive member of society.. I don't want to see you.. Get in the railcar and go to Katy. If they have a mental disorder.. then perhaps all this money being spent on shelters could be diverted into housing at a mental facility where they can get proper treatment.. IMHO hobos are as much an eyesore as grafitti, maybe more so.. If the city was serious, "Bonez" White would pass an ordinance to fine property owners who put up with the hobos on their property.. but since most of them live in city owned parks, I don't see this ever happening. I am not Jesus.. I'm not the holy roller who has to be compassionate like him.. I'm a realist.. I want my city to be livable and be able to enjoy parks and outdoor recreation with my kids without the smell of urine permeating the air and some ____ stained human debris asking me for another handout. No thanks.. I already paid my taxes..
  15. Where's Sienna Plantation? Must be outside da loop, because anyone who is anyone lives inside the loop.. /holds nose up high Regan is a couple of blocks from my house, and I don't know what it was like before (It was already under renovation when we moved) but it's very nice now. Went to vote there last Nov when the renovation was just about complete.. Now they're completing the track field next door.. Ought to be nice once finally done.. We like taking the path through the school following beverly to walk to berryhill.. Cheers!

    Southwest Airlines

I've flown Southwest many times.. and I'm still around to talk about it! *Gasp!* So.. the safety issue seems to be that inspections weren't done.. not that they found damaged/compromised airplanes.. This does not necessarily equate an unsafe airplane.. If they do indeed do inspections that they didn't do, and find something wrong, then I'll be the first one to throw a stone..
  17. why was I not invited.. oh wait.. nevermind.. I didn't donate a bucket of money to the mayor.. nevermind..
  18. Did that overturn Dallas' anti-pan handling law? I thought it worked well at least keeping beggars off the corners.. Yeah.. I know.. I was sort of being sarcastic.. Good idea!
  19. The joint processing center is still on course for the end of Baker St.. Funding will just come from elsewhere, other than bonds.. But I'm guessing the scope will change some..
  20. Well.. it goes with my first assertion.. "The ones who don't ask for money can hang out there.. and those who do, can't." The problem is it's not mutually exclusive.. some hobos will beg.. some, granted, will not.. I don't have a huge problem with those who don't beg, other than them using the street as a personal toilet.. Thats not very world class.. Or maybe it is.. hmm.. I have a huge problem with the enablers.. those who continue to perpetuate the problem by giving handouts.. (Churches, shelters, etc.. ) This will only keep them hanging out and collecting.. Maybe move the shelters and churches who give food away to the suburbs.. Handouts do not solve the problem. But as long as people think they are helping and feeling good about themselves, then they will always be there.
  21. The ones who don't ask for money can hang out there.. and those who do, can't.. maybe camps would be a good start.. the problem is perpetuated by organizations and individuals giving hand-outs, and not expecting the hobos to do anything more.. That's great people are so caring and thoughtful that they want to help their fellow humans who are down on their luck.. however, when it becomes a lifestyle.. man, cut the rope. The hobos who live in Hermann Park have cell phones.. Maybe a pan-handling law should be passed, and stick them in jail.. that'll solve them being homeless.. Or maybe arrested for tax evasion since they get "income" but pay no taxes on it.. None of this will happen, and eventually things will be as bad as San Fran and maybe there will be another mass exodus to the bubs again because the hobos have taken over midtown/downtown once again..

  23. The jails have been here for a number of years, and as long as the court houses are downtown, the jails will be downtown.. Shuttling in a few hundred prisoners every day does not make sense.. Plus family visitation, lawyer visitations (many large law firms are also downtown), would make this more difficult.. The new jails are at least somewhat architecturally pleasant, not like the old ugly one on congress which will eventually go away. The new IPC was to be on the north side of the bayou, south side of Baker St, where there is currently a muddy parking lot. HPD and the Sheriff's Office will share this processing center and add a few thousand new beds. Design is still under way so we'll see. The bond proposal defeat has not changed anything, the jail is still on schedule. Remaining funding will most likely come from the feds. There is a larger homeless problem in downtown Houston than having inmates roaming around. I would be more embarrassed about cruising the bayou and saying.. oh.. there's another homeless camp.. and there's another.. and there's another..
  24. Also Studewood -> Studemont -> Montrose .. essentially the same..
  25. Great pics there.. Wish they had some hi-res ones so you can actually make out what's in the pics tho..
