Town & Country Mall History At 12850 Memorial Dr.
Zippy replied to Lowbrow's topic in Historic Houston
I worked at Sam Goody's (2nd floor) in the early 90's while in high school.. The place was already going downhill.. Pretty much just Arby's and McDonalds were left and some bakery place as far as food places.. Sam Goody had a 2nd store on the 3rd floor as well.. We would call up there from time to time if we didn't have the tape/cd a customer might be looking for. I remember working Halloween day and parents would take their kids there to trick or treat.. it seemed odd.. The security always seemed to be a bit.. "overzealous".. I remember having lunch in my car with the engine running in the parking garage.. Mid-summer and probably about 95 outside, so A/C was necessary.. anyway.. this guy came by in his golf cart and told me to turn the car off.. my exhaust wasn't even as noisy as those fart cans on ricer hondas are these days.. Anyway.. no pics.. sorry.. Just reminiscing.. Edit: Oh yeah.. those theaters were on the east side of the (now) tollway.. within walking distance to eachother.. both faced the same way.. I saw many a movie there.. but can't remember which.. -
Chron: "Bayous are flush with fecal bacteria" Duh..Tomorrow's headline: "The sun came up in the east" Anyone ever bike/run under Waugh drive at The bayou? There's quite a bat population there.. the poop doesn't just fall on the trails. Birds and fish and alligators.. oh my! Everyone's gotta poop.. who goes swimming there anyway? And of course the human street resident downtown.. Their main bathroom is the sewer.. Just wait until that fancy new park opens.. Might want to do some comparative analysis on a before and after.. Congrats Chron! That's some great reporting! Who would have guessed?!

GreenStreet: Mixed-Use Development At 1201 Fannin St.
Zippy replied to MontroseNeighborhoodCafe's topic in Downtown
Not to squish your flowers, but there already is a dueling piano bar in midtown.. "Howl at the moon".. I hadn't been to the one in Houston yet, but the one in San Antonio is ALWAYS packed as well.. Cheers! -
Anyone paddle around the bayou around that area? It always seems like there's quite a current where the bayous join.. Might be an interesting struggle to paddle up-stream to get to river oaks.. But I've never done it, so maybe it's not so bad. Looking forward to seeing this place completed. I'd like to see an independent coffee shop there in some old-skool fashion.

Harris County Jail At 700 North San Jacinto St.
Zippy replied to anonymouspreservationist's topic in Downtown
A little "insight" from one who works around this building.. *ahem* anyway... the last thing I heard is that this will become a surface parking lot. At the end of baker on the corner of the bayou will be a new joint processing center/jail for HPD and the SO to be completed in 2010 (?). So the surface lot at the end of the street will be taken and there will no longer be any parking. The powers who be initially wanted to use this warehouse location for the new JPC, but the angle of the new housing center which shares this block did not meet the requirements for footage/cost. The new building will be around 10 stories. (All info subject to change as it is still in progress) -
They're pouring cement and putting up support for something next to this area now. Looks like re-building the ramp they tore down? Maybe they'll move some dirt around some more like they've been doing for the past 2 years.. I can't believe nobody knows what is going on in this spot. hrmgn..

Grew up in Katy, got married, had a kid, moved to the Heights. I think the thing that would keeps young'ins out of the city is the cost. Getting a small parcel of land for 350K+ is not for most starters. Thank god we were able to stay... I'll never return to burbtown. Cheers!

This whole corner is still for sale and I've not seen that they were sold. The gas station would make a great coffee shop with outdoor seating.. but the neighbourhood might not like a business right there. (as I live a few blocks from there) I'm sure they'll all go to some developer.. so long as they don't build apartments here (townhomes, same thing) I'll be okay with a pseudo-victorian style rebuild. Cheers!

Walking by today, it looks like they're leveling the drop-off to the level of the landing behind the coffee house. This should give at least some access to the back for parking. Has someone leased this place? There has not been any activity in the building itself however. It's still boarded up and has holes in the walls.

Walking by today.. They've been leveling off the drop to the bayou over the past weeks with some fill dirt to the angle of the "bridge." I suspect the "bridge" will be removed at some point. They were breaking up the cement divider down this drop today. Still noone has any idea what they are doing with this area? Perhaps more PARKING?!

Better yet, another BW3's. The place in midtown never has parking, and always busy, and the village is too far (and there is no parking) And their sauce is spicier than h00ters.

Yeah.. the signs were posted at the top of the ramp and one at the bottom of the ramp. They were spray-painted on wood boards in neon orange paint. Idunno if they are still there.. They might be discarded in the bushes. Good deal if they're continuing the bayou walk. the only problem with going east of this bridge is they will have to build up some walkway as the buildings on the south bank to the east of this location drop straight into the bayou. I'll keep my eyes open.

I walk by about every day for lunch. There was a spray-painted sign a couple weeks ago saying "Construction starts 5/28/06". There were some people who parked down at the bayou for free. Now the gates are closed and today there was a bulldozer and a backhoe there parked at at the bottom of the bayou (almost under the bridge). Maybe it is unrelated utilities being run or something. But here's to hoping! Cheers!

Anyone know what is going on in that old green building on/near Allen's Landing. I've tried to research the building for some time but never came up with anything. Now the concrete near San Jacinto and Commerce is marked up with neon paint going down into the bayou. They had some goofy water thing with trees there a few years back. I hope that's not returning. Cheers!

Harris County Jail At 1301 Franklin St.
Zippy replied to Houston1stWordOnTheMoon's topic in Downtown
Aye. The current thought is that there will be RFID for inmate tracking. (Which may or may not actually happen) Also there will be video visitation rather than the behind the plexi-glass type that is currently being used. Too much contraband still seeping through. -

This is true. This was the old jail full of rats which now just holds records. (And rats) I don't know of any plans to renovate or make it something else since it is doing it's job fine. Also, across from the new 1200 Baker jail will be a joint IPC (Inmate Processing Centre) for HPD and the Sheriff's Office slated to open in 2010. From what I remember it will be somewhere around 10 floors. Cheers!
