  1. Does anyone re member when the POS opened and closed (years)? They were located @ the SEC of today's 610 and 59, just north of Bellaire. When they were demolished, I retrieved a metal post from a railing surrounding the horse ring. Also, in the late 1970's, Ranch 74 Beef had an outlet there (the stables were already gone). Thanks for responding!

I experienced my first horse ride there. I remember a big red barn there too. I'll look for some pics on this. Thanks for the memory blast!

    Peace,

And what was the name of the old stables on Westheimer (west side)? I rode a couple of times out there too sometime in the 70's. Does anyone have a picture of that?

  2. I remember Busch Gardens! It was created quickly and why they put it in that part of town I will never know? Thas probably why it met an untimely demise. Who in the heck wanted to take their kids to an industrial area?

I just recall it there until about 1975???

I remember it being only open for a year, if that long. I believe it closed it's doors in 1971 due to lack of customers. I remember seeing the biggest goldfish I had ever seen (~16").

Also you have to join or sign in, but here's a link to a video of the park (5th link down):

  3. Just got back from Notsuoh, downtown Houston's former venerated hangout back in the early days of gentrification. It took over the former Clark's space and, although it's not exactly the same, looks and feels great. This is one of those little things that I think is going to make a big difference (if it lasts) over the long run. I even think it's open til like 4 am.

Notsuoh (Houston spelled backwards) in the early 1900's. You can find this photo at http://www.houstonian.freeservers.com/history/1900.htm.

  4. Hmmm... For me, Casa Ole fall into the same category as Monterey House, Tortuga, Pancho's and others of their ilk. The food there looks and tastes cheap. The chips are often greasy at these places, the cheese is the lowest quality, the food is not well prepared, the rice is mushy or overcooked, the food tastes reheated and not fresh and on and on... blah... :o

    Who ruffled your feathers?

  5. I used to live in Midtown and always passed by the Kirby House. Does anyone know what business or organization is there? There is no signage at all.

I found this photo at http://www.houstonhistory.com/poduct2/album3/jsalbum.html

There it is referred to as the Inglenook, John Henry Kirby House, 2006 Smith Street at Pierce Avenue. It was originally built in 1893-94, remodeled 1807-1900, and then incorporated into a new house 1925.

  6. I was looking through my Monday July 28 1969 Houston Post paper and read this.

A Salute To Our Three Astronauts from Weingartens

Your heroic and historic action has earned you the admiration of all the civilized world

    WELCOME HOME - WELL DONE

They offer a 11 x 14 free color picture July 28, 29, 30 only. at all Weingartens stores

I remember that! Wow! In fact, if my memory serves me right, Weingartens provided color pictures for many space adventures following the first. I had 2 or 3 of those pictures at one time. The catch was that you could only obtain the pictures in the papers at Weingartens. Does anyone still have any of those?

  7. Is it any worse than "nursing home"? Or Mental Hospital?

The other term for orphanage is orphan asylum. You just don't get it, do you Filio?

My orphaned friends did not like the name of their housing units; coming from the source, I think that's a "given."

ROYM is right to say that orphanage symbolizes "a place for a bunch of kids who's parents have died" - or - have been abandoned.

Why do OUR living units get nice names ????

  8. In the late 50s , I remember a large orphanage on the way to Galveston . I was

I grew up in Sharpstown (apparently near an orphanage) and over the years from attending Sutton Elem., Jane Long JH, and SHS, I met quite a few aqaintenances. It sucks that they could not contact me after they were gone.

Does anyone know what orphanage that might be?

And by the way..........we ARE in the next century.....why haven't WE, (As The People) given this type of hopeful place a more respectable name? ~global

  9. I am interested in viewing photographs from the World's Fair Park historically in San Antonio. When I went there during the 70's, most rides and attractions had been shut down due to safety hazards. I would love to see your photos of the actual working park.

Also, according to Wikipedia (not always reliable), "many structures were demolished and moved, in what was considered a blighted area, to make room for the fair." What do you know?

    Thanks for reading this!

  10. I read somewhere that the Conquistador across from Sharpstown Mall was the first high-rise condo to be built in the state of Texas. Not sure when it was developed, but it's still there. Obviously the neighborhood has changed tremendously.

I think you read that in another thread here at HAIF. I am unsure when the Conquistador (18 floors) was actually built, but it was included in Frank Sharps plan for Sharpstown. 1960's???

I know that Capital Lofts (10 floors) was built in 1908 and the Scanlan Buiding (12 floors) was built in 1909.

The 806 Main building (AKA: Second National Bank Building; Carter Building) was built in 1910 and has 23 floors.

Here is a link on bank buildings: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/lcseiler/houdn5.htm

  11. Ha! Shed was correct. I remember him well. I just emailed him tonight because I heard a familiar voice on Channel 2 News and came into the room and re-wound the DVR - sure enough it was his Dad doing one of those "man on the street" interviews. He's one of those people I'll always be friends with.

Hey have you heard this! It's my favorite Public Service Announcement!

    http://www.enviromedia.com/MP3/TCEQ_stormdrain.mp3

Call me crazy, but I don't remember who Shed's dad is. That's cool that you both keep in touch. I am still in touch with Julie Murphy as well. Do you remember her? I got her involved in MYF in junior high I think.

Also, cool Public Service Announcement. No I haven't heard that until now. Thanks, that's great !

  12. There were plenty of MYFers that did dumber! I wish that hadn't kept you away. I

Well, first of all my brother and Dad were doing Scouts there in the Activities Center. Then again, I was a Campfire Girl from 1972-1983, and the church knew us all. Again, stupid things that kids do......I must have been a teenager because my son is acting just like I used to back then, lol.

Hey, do you remember Shed, Shay? My mind is going first. Shadrack?

  13. Gethsemane IS where I knew you from! I went there from - well I don't know - since before I have memories until I left for college.

It's funny now, but it wasn't then: Paul Hernandez and I went to Astroworld with the MYF. While we were there, something struck us to begin spitting over the side of cable car that crossed over the park. When we landed, we were surrounded by security and escorted to the main office. They called our moms and they had to come pick us up from the park. We were literally kicked out of Astroworld on an MYF outing! Oh man! Dumb things that kids do......

I didn't get too much involved with MYF after that. I was embarrassed about what we did. Funny!

  14. You don't have to go to Dallas to find people who don't know what Mexican food is, just start here. I personally don't know how Chuy's stays open. Horrible.

Amen Musicman! The Chuy's in Austin is a hangout for college kids and always crowded, but they serve free queso, chips, and salsa there. The Chuy's in San Antonio is never crowded and I have no idea how they can be profiting at all. They even moved their location to the north side of town, but still not many cars in their parking lot. You're quess is as good as mine, because I'd take Taco Bell before Chuy's any day!

You might want to leave your opinion about Chuy's at http://www.yelp.com. It's a fairly new website where customer's can leave their opinions on restaraunts, stores, etc. that they like or dislike. If there is not a listing for the business you are looking for then you can add that business. It's pretty cool. I've left my 2 cents regarding quite a few businesses.
